Can it be viewed anywhere? My character sheet lists defense and armor, and not attack.

It's on your Character page. Next to the character's picture, in the bottom right corner, you'll see 5 numbers stacked on top of each other. The middle one is your Attack, or your Spellpower if the character in question is a Mage.

i think Attack rating doesnt apply to Mages since Staff attacks dont miss.

the magic modifier determines the attack rating for weapon wielding mages.

For mages the attack rating is (answer from another thread):
Spellpower/5 + Any + attack bonus given by dexterity and/or strength
It is never displayed, so you have to compute it manually taking into account the bonuses from spells and items. Not good, but there you are.

I assume you are using the combat magic formula?
