I didn't like the weapon as well at first. Wait until you have it at Level X and then equip it with a SMG magazine upgrade V and then try it again. At this point you have the necessary duration to actually kill stuff without constantly running into overheat. It's a completely different weapon, I am not kidding.
Until then use any other weapon, they are indeed better.
