So,having played NWN but not so much NWN2, I'm curious how the toolset for DAO compares to NWN and NWN2? I havent picked up DAO, and would love to try it out - but apparently I cant try the toolset without buying the game either, darn it. :)

Thanks in advance!

Well, pick up the game anyway. I think it's may be BioWare's best offering.

As for the toolset: The dialogue and scripting mechanics will be familiar from the NWN1 toolset. The cutscene and animation tools are spectacular and not too hard to learn for those with an interest in quality machinima or in-game scenes. However, the level and area creation are much more complicated and time-consuming, but the control you have over the scenery is spectacular. The learning curve is steep on custom content and level design, and there are still some bugs or unexplained processes - but the power to customize will be enormous once these kinks are worked out. The toolset allows you to make stand-alone modules like NWN, but also allows you to make plug-ins to extend the core game world and game play like the Elder Scrolls Construction Set (new hairstyles, spells, quests, etc.). They went out of their way to create a system that should reduce conflicts between different mods (if the modders are careful).

But first, you just need to play the game. If you like anything of Bioware's, I guarantee you will love it.

That sounds nice. Too bad about the higher learning curve. I'm an ex-programmer myself, but if a feature or procedure isn't documented well, that doesn't mean I will understand it any better than a layman ;)

So... I suppose I'll have to pick it up. I think my current machine meets the specs - barely. It's too bad - due to a rather sudden move, and my wife still being unemployed, I cannot justify buying it yet. I was hoping to be able to play around with the toolset until she got a job, but the toolset page says you need a registered copy of DAO, so I suppose I'll have to just wait until she is employed.

Drat. :)

I disagree.
If you knew what you where doin in NWN2, DA:O should be easy to pick up.
And i strongly believe it's less time consuming to create a large level that looks great with the DA:O toolset then it was with NWN2.

Nothing like answering a month late! :)

Well, that's promising. I am intrigued. This, then, has moved to my #1 slot for games currently on shelves to buy. That being said, however, I'm also watching for Elemental, and the mmos Guild Wars 2, DC Heroes Online, and Star Wars: the Old Republic.

Only so much time, and so much money, so my wife better get a job fast so I can get this now, rather than wait, heh! I love guild wars 1, but I'm getting seriously burnt out and nothing else currently out interests me... but if those others come out before I can afford anything, I'll have a much harder time deciding :)
