Almost done with my first playthrough, and I took Dog every step of the way (who could say "no" to that face?)
I just kept his Strength and Dexterity even and ignored the rest. He did all right. I mean, he wasn't really a tank or a damage dealer, but he did his thing and didn't require much babysitting (I'm playing on Normal).
Thoughts? What did you do, and how did it turn out?
Stats for Dog?

I love Dog and have him as a staple party member on almost every playthrough. I tend to go one of two ways with him. You can split him Strength and Dex with a sprinkle of Con for use as a front line fighter/offtank. You can also go almost pure Strength. He'll be a bit more fragile, but he quickly destroys just about anything he gets his teeth on. Set his tactics to hunt enemy Mages and they will never be a problem. His abilities (such as charge, howl and overwhelm) also make him well suited to crowd control when used properly. I have even had Dog successfully tank the High Dragon before. Cheers!

About the same for me, high strength and dexterity and moderate constitution and pretty much ignore the rest. Give him a good collar and the right warpaint and he is murder on mages. But one of my proudest moments was when I sicced him on an ogre while I dealt with the other one. He took that ogre down pretty fast.

I went pure strength with him on my last playthrough and had a blast. His overwhelm ability was an instagib ability on mages and archers and works on every humanoid orange mob in the game. Jarvia, Zathrian, Branka, Ser Cauthrien, etc, etc, etc, all fell victim to my puppy's overwhem, which made all of those fights substantially easier considering the fact that your dog is doing steady damage while at the same time every other party member is getting free hits in on the boss. I killed Zathrian in about 10 seconds, no lie. The others lasted longer, but the fights were far, FAR easier than in any other playthrough of mine. Enemies that shrug off stuns in no time flat fall victim to full length overwhelms. It's an obscenely powerful ability and a reason why I'll never understand why so many people rag on the dog on these forums. I'd take it that most of them have never played with the dog long enough to get to overwhelm becuase the mabari is worth it's weight in gold based on that one ability alone. Not to mention the group stun, charge, and regular hits that were hitting for over 70 at the endgame.

Yeah, I don't understand the Dog haters either. He is, no pun intended, a beast right out of the box. Let him develop a bit and he truly becomes a monster. I value him far more than any other npc.

I like dog, but I do find he gets a bit frail at high levels. Is there anything better than the Pure **** Braid btw?

I like bringing my dog as well, he's quick and charges out at mages or archers fast bringing them down. Also on my current party roster, he has the 2nd highest defense rating, 2nd to my main char which is a tank. (i kinda messed up with Alistair's attributes, first playthrough so forgive my ignorance lol)
Edit:
And to answer the question for this thread, i split it all on strength, dexterity and constitution. I might change it to just upgrading strength and dexterity later, it will depend on how he performs in battle.

No, it's the best collar. I think it's from the high dragon.
Not sure where you get this for warpaint, but it looks like the best for that.

Love dog, for all the reasons sillymonkboy mentions... I just have to train him to stop cocking his (/her no water works attached) leg in doors... great companion.

I liked what I saw of him so far. Had him along a while though I kept him in camp after a while, to save him up for my next char. (few 'evil' chars so he'll be ideal to fill up a slot for the part of my crazed Dwarf or berserk barb)

Yes, the Warpaint of the West Hills is probably the best overall *general usage* kaddis, but it is also the ugliest. It makes Dog look like someone poured a bucket of dirty motor oil on him.
I've been thinking I might downlaod the toolset and try to change the graphic.

My dog is usually so covered in blood spatters that I can't really see what his warpaint looks like.sillymonkboy wrote...

I turn off persistent gore. Its fine in or just after a battle, but otherwise it just looks ridiculous.

In nightmare diff party of rogue (myself), sten, morrigan and doggie I went heavy str/con and had him be a mix of a tank/dps. In hindsight, I'd swap points from con to dex. Dmg wise he sucked, through overwhelm was great for fighting orange humanoid and mages (at least until morrigan got mana clash to one shot them)
Trying out different party combinations is pretty fun.

The dog is like a warrior...it bites haha.
So if you want him to be dps or tank follow this guide http://social.biowar...96/index/528968
OTHERWISE, follow what wrathofnature had told you, since the dog is weak and will die easily if he is a pure dps

Until you kill the dragon Andraste, the Blackmetal Torque is the best collar. Buy it in camp. Make sure you keep the Kaddis of the Siege-Breaker in your pack for the Dragon and drake fights.

Dog is also the only character that doesn't slow down when in battle. Every one else gets their weapon out and kind of... waddles. So frustrating when trying to cross a busy room.
