 Hi all -

Just got the game today (like everyone else) and now I'm looking at the map and wondering if there's any particular advantage to going to any one location ahead of any others.

I'm not terribly spoiled but if anyone has any general pointers (like I can pick up NPC so-and-so in Redcliffe, etc) that'd be useful. :) Or if going to one of the spots on the map is a really bad idea at level 6, that'd be good to know too.

Cheers! Hope everyone is having as much fun as I am.

You can pick up Wynne at the Circle Tower; she's the dedicated healer, so I like to get her early -- but if you're playing as a healer mage yourself, you might not care. You can get Oghren in Orzammar (Frostback Mountain Pass), but that's probably the longest and toughest of the wide-open-world plots, so you probably don't want to go there first. If I remember correctly, you get Zevran after doing /some/ stuff in Denerim. And you get Shale by stopping by Sulcher's Pass. (Shale's plot then takes you elsewhere.) In my real playthrough, I picked up Shale, then picked up Wynne. Didn't regret that order.

Note that pretty much every plot has some side content that you won't be able to finish at a low level unless you're really awesome. Don't be ashamed. Come back later!

shale is the golem from stone prisoner right?

edit: i went to redcliffe first, and you don't really gain any advantage whatsoever, so i wouldn't suggest it (theres no new party members or anything), also theres a dragon in part of the quest chain i couldn't fight because he was too high level =/

I've got Stone Prisoner showing as active DLC, but Sulcher's Pass does not show up on my area transition map. I just left Lothering. Has anyone else encountered this?

You can also head to the Brecilian Forest or to the human village of Redcliffe.

Have you been to party camp yet (you go there automatically after leaving Lothering)? If not, that needs to occur before Sulcher's Pass shows up on your map.

Yes, I had the dream sequence, conversed with Alistair, conversed with the merchant dwarves, and then Gathered My Party and Ventured Forth...back into Lothering, because I didn't see Sulcher's Pass and wanted to finish some side quests.

I'll give the Brecilian Forest a look-see if I still can't get the Pass to show up. I have gotten a few crystals as loot drops, if that is any indication of whether Stone Prisoner is properly installed.

So after arriving at the Dalish Camp, I went back to the area transition and there is still no such location on my map.

Also, I have seen a screenshot of someone's Completed Quests containing a Premium Content section. My journal does not appear to have anything like that.

I have the Steam-distributed version, if that makes a difference. The other DLC (Blood Dragon Armor, Wicked Oath, etc.) show up just fine and appear to be working as normal.

On all my playtroughs I picked up shale first , and then never use him cuz he's to good a tank and I want a challenge :P . But the items there are awesome and its not to difficult as for instance going to Redcliffe first.
I preffer going to Mage Tower + Brecillian Forest first to get an unlimited supply of lyrium/elfroot for potions.
Also its important to know that unlike your companions advising to stay away from denerim , it's a great source of exp items and random quest updates including some companion quests.
If you have Warden's Keep DLC then it's nice to get that done early aswell for the party chest and vendors. (unless you like the items you get there to be max tier ***wich is still achievable by selling and rebuying from vendors at Warden's Keep]***)

For awhile, I tried to stay towards a story, and went to Redcliff first and completed that entire quest chain. Then on my last play through I did Brecilian Forrest, Mage Tower, then Orzammar, then Redcliff, and I found that to be much more enjoyable story wise. For me, the Orzammar then the Redcliff quest chains back to back are epic alone, and together massive, and a grand ending to the first half of the game.

I wanted to pick up Shale first, that was my option. A great tank with spells, a mixture of the two.

Then I got Wynn, her spells can bring back to dead a party member and vessel of spirt a massive bonus to spell power. Makes nearly all spell hits crits during that time

Morrgian because of ehr Ice freece, I like having another mage in the party for a dps.

Then myself. I usually always take the four I mentioned, Unless with Lelaina I took her to see the ashes

There is an advantage going to the tower early on, besides as mentioned about Wynne the healer. It also has a fair amount of stat boosts involved with it. Which can help your leveling up choices later on.

However it is worth doing the dwarf one first at least once, so you can take Oghren and Zeveran with you to the tower, as each character gets their own special sequence in the tower's later parts.

Also you get Morrgian's plot item there, and if you been there before it's pretty much cake up to the top of the tower if you know how to do it. Then after that I usually go to the Urn.

I skip a part in finding the location by going to dermin, in that guys house and looking in the closet. I go to Haven, get the urn and travel to redfcliff

Did you even talk to Levi in the camp? He's near Sandal and his father.

I hate "ought to's", but generally I have gone to the Circle Tower first to pick up Wynne and get the stat bonuses from the Fade, then did Stone Prisoner and Warden's Keep to get the good loots from there. Only time I didn't do this is when I played a mage myself and went to Redcliffe first. Someone mentioned Orzammar- I am thinking of going there early this time in order to pick up Key of the City, then return later to finish all the Deep Roads nastiness. Are there any consequences for leaving the kingship quest lingering for a while?

Another thing I usually do early-ish in the game are the chantry board and Sergeant Kylon quests in Denerim. Can't do it too early because those gangs are tough, but I am usually scraping for gold and this puts a bit in your pocket.

RP wise, I think it makes the most sense to go to Redcliff first with most characters. Al keeps pushing for it, and the folks you run into in Lothering seem to indicate trouble there. So leaving aside my meta-gaming knowledge, I tend to go there first. Sometimes with mages I'll hit the Circle first because they have a personal connection there. And I suppose Dwarves might do Orzammar first and have it be in character.

Actually, to me, RP wise, it makes sense to take care of my treaties first, and even Alistair will throw that out along with his "I don't know where we should go" speech, stating that Eamon's a good man, but he's not sure if that's where we should go. However, I don't have a treaty compelling Eamon to help me, and, prior to Redcliffe, I of course have no idea that Alistair himself is a compelling reason to go there first. I do, however, have the treaties for everyone else, and I do know I'm going to need all the help I can get.

I've never encountered Zevran before doing at least one of the major quests.

Back to the OP, I usually go pick up Wynne in the Circle Tower before doing anything else. I've done a few run-throughs though where I go do Orzammar, then Circle of Magi, Brecilian Forest, the Urn quest, and go to Redcliffe last. I don't do the DLC's in every run through but when I do I get them done somewhere in the middle of the run-through.

Straight to the bar. It's going to be a long one and you'll need to stock up.

If I am playing a Mage, Elf, or Dwarf, I tend to do it's quest arc last. For me, it seems RP wise that you wouldn't want to go back to "that" anytime soon, though that is just me.

My first port of call after Lothering really depends on whether or not and how I want to RP my character. My dwarf noble for example could not wait to get back to Ozzamarr to confront or otherwise be the spanner in Bhelen's schemes. While my dwarven commoner put off going back to Ozzamarr simply because she just didn't want to deal with her mother, the carta and Ozzamarr's politics though having Allistair as a distraction had some say as to why she stayed as long as she did on the surface.

If you are meta gaming however just want the most logical companion acquisition / path then you would want to go to either the Circle of Magi or acquire shale first.

Personally I prefer to do circle first as I personally prefer Wynne over Morrigan as my default party caster/healer. Morrigan may be easier on the eyes but her character irritates the heck out of me.

Getting shale early is a good idea as well. Bar the PC, she out tanks and out taunt everyone else.

I have to agree as a noob to the game and playing a mage my party just seemed to end up at Redcliff, after Orzammar then Lothering.
Though I seem to be getting my butt kicked at the night time undead raid.
Should I jump back and go elsewhere to pick up some better equipement/toons?

Another consideration is unlocking specialties. For example, if you're playing a mage and really, really want to be an arcane warrior, then it might be a good idea to visit the elves first. (This is of course assuming the arcane warrior specialty isn't already unlocked.) Similarly, if you're playing a warrior and want to unlock champion as soon as possible, Redcliff might be best. Or, for berzerker, the dwarves.
