Hubby can't stand Alistair, he's in the "what a winer" camp.  I don't dare tell him that part of the reason I like Ali so much is that he reminds my of hubby when we first met.

hehe i just had to laugh at this, because although I am not sure what my husband actually thinks of Alistair, my husband *is* Alistair, I swear it.   My hubby is a very intelligent compassionate man but when it comes to certain duty related things we tend to morph into a loghain-cailan incident with him talking of unicorns, butterfly's and happy endings he will make possible and I into the eye rolling Loghain asking him to attend to reality :D  Of course I do it to keep the man safe, every good idealist needs someone to keep them in line and feet on the ground I say :)

Alistair is a good guy. Yeah he can be a bit of a doof if you would rather him put you before duty. He really ticked me off with his duty speech so soon after he approached ME for a tentscapade.   (which in retrospect ended well because it made me try next playthrough with Zevran who is a really fab character -- I just can't leave him at the gate!!)

Ali is a well meaning young inexperienced buffoon with a heart of gold.  His first love is and always will be duty however.   He has the greatest opportunity to elevate Ferelden and its because of his high ideals. To be successful he will need someone else advising him ( or running the show, depending on your point of view i think) but idealism DOES have its place, it just needs a serious reality filter.  Alistair IS the epitome of happy endings, sunshine and pots of gold at the end of rainbows in many ways.... he is an emotional guy, which is nice, even when it borders on the "dwelling" side of things.    Perfect? No chance.  Refreshing in a cold dark world, sure.

I no longer romance him though. I am pretty tied to Zev each playthrough. Though, I *would* give Loghain a shot.  I really loved him in The Stolen Throne. *meow*

It seems like some of the men are jealous that he can express his true feelings and that he is not to afraid to be romantic.

Armchair pyschiatry.  I liked the tongue-in-cheek response I got from someone on a different thread--why don't you tell me "that says a lot about your mom!"

I don't think anyone is jealous of Alistair.

There are pathetic whiners who do that for every single male character in any of these games who have something bad happen to them...and then have the gall to be sad about it.  'Wow my whole family got massacred...that makes me a little sad' OMG WHINER!!!  WAAAAAAAH I HATES HIM!

Then they go cry and flame and complain how Bioware releasing Return to Ostagar late is a terrible tragedy that ruined their lives...because that is something worth whining about.

Not afraid at least until he has sex with the PC at last . . .

But really, are any men actually jealous of a fictional character, no matter how sexy or appealing that character is to some women?

Alistair is one of BioWare's worst characters.  A poor attempt to do a Joss Whedon type character - a type of character I dislike anyway.   Constantly using sarcastic one liners rather than attempting  any real conversation and thinking they are a lot funnier than they actually are.  See also that swarmy, smug ****** Nathan Drake from Uncharted.

I had no problem whatsoever with sacrificing his ass at then end.

If William Shatner feels this is true, then this is fact. *nods*

I think a real tribute to Bioware is the fact that every single character they have ever made gets this said about them at some point.  People really have strong opinions about them and I can get if you do not like people who use humor and sarcasm to avoid talking about real issues then it could get annoying.  I might point out Zevran and Morrigan do almost the same thing.

The difference is Morrigan is funny, whereas Alistair thinks he's funny but is not.  There's few things worse than someone who thinks they're a comedian when they're not funny at all.

I also don't think she uses humour or sarcasm to avoid anything, she just gives her honest opinion of things.

I like Alistair he is alright but I sure won't lose much sleep over it if he is not brought back as a party member in any of the sequels.  I do however love building tanks so that aspect of him appeals to me.  Alistair is almost invincible if specced and equipt right which is why I roll my eyes whenever people say he is a terrible fighter.  I mean they get him at level 3 if they cannot make him good then they simply suck.

However the same chorus of baboons who shriek with rage whenever a male character suffers a personal loss, as if men should be above caring about anything or anybody, just drive me nuts.  The last thing I want is a parade of Sten-type characters and only Sten-type characters.  How boring.

Morrigan's opinion of things is always 'everybody is a tool and should be used' and she mainly holds this opinion because she has lived a sheltered life in the wilderness and doesn't really understand society.  Ergo she holds it in contempt but it is mainly out of a sense of insecurity...that was the whole point of he story with the mirror...

Humor is subjective I enjoy Alistair's humor and you do not.  But just because you don't doesn't  mean he is a bad character, it simply means you don't find him funny.

I like him because he's sincere, tender, and has a heart of gold. He seems genuinely grateful and even amazed that the PC would want to give her heart to him. And as far as the Duncan thing goes, I think it's proper for a man to mourn the loss of a friend and mentor. And frankly I wouldn't want to rule a country either.

Seriously.  If I was forced to become President of the United States I would be pretty freaking depressed and it is far worse for Alistair since being King is for life.

For some, I think it plays a part, as there definitely seems to be a pattern (see: Carth and Kaidan).

But to be fair, I think that can also apply to some women and their hatred of Anora.  Image IPB

Anora can rule my kingdom anyday!

But yes it is a longstanding pattern going back all the way to Anomen in BG2...but to be fair I don't even think the women liked him.  I liked him personally except his banter didn't change when he went through his alignment changes.

Maybe I'm one of the few, but I'm a woman and I liked Anora. In talking with her after getting her out of Howe's estate, I had a problem. I wanted to make Alistair king, but Anora was far better prepared to be an effective ruler. She understood how to weild power. I actually did support her at the Landsmeet and thought all was well and good until I saw the epilogue and how she treated the elves. I went back to before the Landsmeet, supported an un-hardened Alistair and was more impressed with his epilogue.

Meta-gaming aside I can see myself still having a difficult decision with those choices, although I think I'm going to harden Alistair this time and rule with him. While Alistair is the rightful heir, he still has no experience as a leader, much less as a king.

Yeah, I was fine with her ruling - she had experience, after all - until I saw the epilogue. To be fair though, I wasn't thrilled with the epilogue for unhardened Alistair (married to my PC) either. It's what motivated me to finally harden him in my next playthrough, even though I felt kind of bad about it.

Same here.

She's never betrayed me at the Landsmeet, so I never -initially- understood all the hate.

I still think the best outcome is Anora and Alistair ruling together, even at the expense of my heart-broken PC.  And oddly enough, part of the reason I never go for the mistress ending is because my of PC's respect for her.  I completely empathized after she mentioned Cailan and his side dishes.

I wish there was a different way to harden him. It seems so OOC for my character to bust out and say that, mostly because it isn't true. His experience was hurtful, and it seems like I'm just piling it on. Also, it feels like I'm stripping away that last bit of vulnerability from him and it doesn't quite seem fair.

Some of my female PCs have had grudging respect for Anora. However, she is too much like Loghain to really earn their respect- grasping for power. She is just more manipulative and sly about it than her father. I could see why some would have a jealous complex about her :) though my PC who was most in love with Alistair (Dalish elf) set them up in a marriage. She was not happy about having to be the mistress, but as she saw it, Anora was getting what she really wanted- not love, but power- so it was a fair trade.  I'm reminded of Chani and Irulan in "Dune".

And my city elf who had no romantic attachment to Alistair at all probably took the dimmest view of her. It was obvious from her interactions with Anora and Cailan that Anora was running the country, which meant that she didn't give a damn about the alienage. She went to the Landsmeet wanting to remove Loghain's eyes with a spoon, and would not have shed any tears if Alistair had decided to execute Anora either.

So did my City Elf...but it had more to do with the whole selling Elves into slavery thing.  She put both Alistair and Anora on the throne figuring two people who relied on her to get into power was even better than one.

It's not the accent so much as the voice.  Somewhere on these forums somebody described Steve Valentine's voice as "audible chocolate."

Anyway, the accent adds its own sexy factor, but only when taken in combination with the whole package. In other words, having the accent adds, but not having it doesn't detract. :P
