Well, it's not my fault you have no clue how to play the very basics of the game, if Alistair dies so much on you. He is perhaps the easiest character to manage out of all of them, and it doesn't take much thought to build him right. Give him a shield, armor, and stick with the sword and shield skills, and he's unstoppable. Out of two playthroughs, I can count the times he died on me on one hand.

As for the second comment, such a rather juvinile view of what constitutes a "man" makes me suspect your own knowledge of how real people, men and women, truly function in the world, is limited, at the very least.

He straight up lies to your face about the arl not being his dad . then gives you a waa, people are mean to me
when i tell them ,as a  weak excuse . A smart ass  that  wont give you a straight answer
if his virginity depended on it .

Um, he didn't lie to you. The Arl wasn't his dad, the king was. He never tells you the Arl was his dad, only that rumors were said about it. Do you actually pay attention to the dialogue? He stated that while people whispered that the Arl was his father, he was told who his real father was: Maric.

And of course, his excuse was hardly weak, it was quite valid. Not to mention there are 100 other more pragmatic reasons for him to say nothing about it.

And then even though he never did it  he says no to you .   He wants nothing
to do with responsibilities what so ever .   i don't know  why you like this guy so
much, now don't get mad at me I'm just asking OK .can you explain please?Posted Image

My guess is you are probably very young, so you really wouldn't understand why Alistair appeals to females (and alot of men, gay and straight). But I will try and make it simple.

Alistair is a very realistic character with realistic faults and strengths, not some idiot macho muscle robot. He is quite imperfect, but those flaws make him all the more endearing to those people who are fond the the character. Perhaps, for starters, he quite readily admits to his flaws and mistakes, and his reluctance to lead or take charge on any large scale is far more interesting than some ego-driven moron who thinks his opinions in all matters should be taken as gospel. And the fact that he likes to pepper most of his conversations with a naive, self depreciating sarcasm/goofieness makes his "whining" difficult to take seriously.

No way! Duncan's beard didn't make him look manly or awesome. It made him look like a dirty hobo, like I half expected him to yell at imaginary friends and poop in alleys behind dumpsters. Everytime I see him I reflexively say that I don't have any spare change.

edit: Same goes for Arl Eamon, too.

LOL! When my boyfriend and I first saw Duncan, the first thing that came to our minds was Sayid, from Lost. He's totally like Sayid-Lite (I say 'lite' because as far as we know Duncan doesn't go around torturing people and stuff, but killin' that Jory dude was pretty hardcore)

And I like Alistair because of his charming awkwardness (and yes, the voice). I like how he's totally a romantic, and how he doesn't want to let your character down, in any regard. And hey, I think the ladies can agree that there's nothing better than a man that's eager to please ;x

But yeah, even not romancing him the party chats with him and the other characters are hilarious. He's just fun to have around. And I totally agree that how good of a tank he is is completely dependant on you as a player. He's =always= the last guy standing in my groups, though I like Shale as a tank too.

Hmm, hot accent, easy on the eyes, charming, snarky humor, and a good tank when spec'ed properly (yeah, he's usually the last man standing). What's not to love? I have a weakness for guys with a British or Australian accent anyway, so I guess there's that. :P I also have a crush on David Tennant even - okay, technically he's Scottish (and Hugh Laurie actually - I did watch Blackadder a long time ago before House - tee-hee), but that's something else entirely. *weeps over the imminent Dr. Who changeover*

Anyway, Alistair never lies about being Arl Eamon's son - N E V E R. Someone needs to learn to pay attention to the dialogue. As one of the previous posters indicated, Alistair clearly says that it was a rumor. He may not tell you about his father right away, but his reasoning is valid: people have always behaved differently towards him after finding out he's Maric's son. Thus, he's worried about YOUR attitude changing, especially if you're female and romantically involved. He just wants you to like him for himself, etc. etc. Although I did get this one dialogue on my human noble female where you can make a comment about finding his being a prince attractive & then he says something to the effect of that being the one good thing about his status.

Women always say that and also say they never see a guy like that, but thats because those of us who are that way are also quiet and extremely shy usually, so we never dare approach a woman we find attractive.

Or maybe I'm just a freak of nature, yup, that must be it.  Posted Image

Alistair is a great character overall and the voice work for him is stellar.  They nailed it.  (The character portrayal, not the person, oh heck I give up).

The voice work is just so perfect for him.  I should add more of his stuff to my soundbites thread.  I'll have to add that to my "to do" list.

I feel what originally caught me up into Alistair is he was the the first character of his sort I had run into during a game. I didn't really know what to expect of Dragon Age, and after more years than I care to think of WoW and other assorted "grind and gloat" games I was taken aback. I was giddy with excitement over a game that took more into account than killing things and getting gear.

In the whiplash of excitement over a game that was thinking more about the player than the paycheck, I was easily wooed into a comfortable place of first loves, attention and flattery. I never expected a character to flirt, be coy and love me in a game. So it was easy to fall in love with the first character I came across. I worked hard to be as sweet as I could to him, and he responded like clockwork.

As the game progressed I realized I was bored with him. After the initial whirlwind there really isn't much left and it is somewhat of a let down to realize you have to go back to "grind and gore". Hum drum.

So I started a noble female PC, wooed Ali a bit than dumped him for Zev. However that story really doesn't speak to me, and the character is just plain ugly.

I have found in the end my favorite story to play was to make an ideal, hunky male noble PC and then live vicariously through Leliana. Treating her with my male PC as I would want to be treated. Sweet, caring, but not afraid to tell me to deal with my own crap.

Alistair is a great first crush, but the real meat in the romances lays deeper with the levels.

Tait

PS. Plus Alistair is more fun to talk to as a dude, especially when he talks about the "Warden Changes" and you can burp in his face as an option!

I think the better question here is why do you care so much? It's just a game you know.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright 1876-1944

Completely OT, but that is the best reason I've ever heard to be less ... cranky.  ^_^

Back on topic now.

He's smart, funny, and keeps on trying. He's also a bit prissy and judgemental: a boyscout.

He's physically beautiful and has a lovely voice. The actor uses his voice perfectly. The accent is a plus, but the voice is the appeal.

He's so terribly young and bereft ... but that means he can grow, or be trained.

While annoying in some ways, he's appealing in others. It works out that he's more often appealing than annoying.

Still ... he's high maintenance. I haven't decided if he's worth it.

I much prefer Zevran, but Alistair is sweet and he is exactly what he tells you he is "(except about the royal bastard part at first). I think it's a stretch to call him smart, though. He's also sensitive and caring.

1. You built him wrong. He's a lean, mean, killing machine in my playtroughs

2. Your'e not an authority on how long you have to know someone to like him and how much. It is irreleveant if you think Al shouldn't have cared about Duncan that much. He apparently did.

3. So what? He's not obligated to tell you everything and his explanation is sound. People lied for far less. Even if you don' accept that it's 1...ONE lie that he feels was perfectly justified. I'm quite sure you lied to your own mother a lot more times than that.

4. He's insicure in his abilities to lead a coutnry. I'll give  you that.

Two separate things here.... How he fights has nothing to do with his likability. ;) That being said, he's actually my most effective fighter. Not sure why you're having trouble keeping him alive. I have that problem with Sten and Ohgren, but not Alistair. He's usually the last one standing in a tough fight.

We don't know how long Alistair knew Duncan, because it's never said how often candidates are found for joining. If they do them in groups of three, it could take years. We know that he was a warden long enough to have gotten to know people and have stories about them and life as a warden. Personally, if everyone I cared about died in an act of betrayal, I'd be in worse shape than Alistair, particularly if they were the only people who'd seemed to value me in my entire life.

I had no problem with him not being up front about being the king's bastard son. It's not like that ever brought him anything but grief, and he explains his reasons pretty well. It's particularly understandable when you're playing a female warden, and he has a romantic interest.

And then even though he never did it  he says no to you.

Not sure what you're referring to here....

EDIT: Oh, I get it. The fact that he doesn't want to get rushed into it. That's a positive, not a negative. Besides, he clearly has insecurities about people caring about him.

The thing about the responsibility, is that he was kicked out of the only home he'd known as a child--not good for confidence at all--and it was made entirely clear that he was no leader of men, just an unwanted bastard. Then he was raised by the chantry, where obedience and following orders without question was expected. Not only has he been raised not to be a leader, he was discouraged from being one. The fact that he fit in so poorly, and has such a sarcastic sense of humor about it all, really shows that they had to work pretty hard to knock the natural leader out of him. That and the fact that he takes such a strong stand when he feels strongly about something.

Anyway, I think the fact that he's so worried about failing people, and so concerned with doing the right thing, shows he's much less likely to be a despot than Anora, who is clearly her father's daughter. I think he'd be a fine king once he came to realize that he was capable.

He's also charming, sweet and funny. Haven't you noticed how many characters there are on television that women like who also fit this mold? Cute, funny guy with a tragic past who has to overcome insecurities to achieve greatness? It's an archetype.

"And given that he's someone who likes to please people, it's understandable that he'd have a fear of leadership after being told his whole life that he was nobody and not to get any ideas otherwise. Even when Eamon first suggests him as king, Teagan asks if he is sure and Eamon responds that it's a sad day when it's come down to this but here it is, even with Alistair standing right there. Talk about a kick in the balls!"

Oh, good point! Damn, that's nasty. If people have been talking like that around him all his life, it's a wonder he's turned out so well.

I had no trouble at all with his reactions at Landsmeet. Of course, I've only read those, not played them, as I agree with him entirely. You kill a king and a company of troops--you die, plaiin and simple.

With the Duncan thing, lets not forget it was him that "saved" Ali from a life as a templar, so that in and of itself grants an amount of admiration, and like everyone else has been saying, having Duncan take Ali under his wing totally gave him a much needed father-figure, considering, again, how most people just think of him as a political pawn =\\

And yeah, he's a little whiney, but I like that he's willing to admit that he's whiney, and even make fun of himself for it. Its nice that he's not so into himself that he can't take a little pleasant ribbing about his shortcomings.

And yes, he blushes adorably =X
