First off, y'all have never met a champion whiner if you think Al's bad. For another, he doesn't whine if he's high enough in esteem for your character. My husband has actually said, "Your Alistair sounds cooler than mine." (My husband plays tanks so he doesn't take Al along.)

Second, as far as dying, that's your fault. Up his strength FAST. The sooner he can get into the Blood Dragon armor, the more unbeatable he is. Currently, in this play-through, he's maxed out on Shield techniques. He took out Broodmother at level 14-15. And just wasted Flemeth at 18. (I got the High Dragon on my Cousland Rogue.) Do NOT max his warrior stats BEFORE you max his Shield stats.

The voice isn't the draw for me, since I was a Crossing Jordan fan, I keep seeing Nigel when I'm not looking at the screen and Al's talking. And Nigel looks NOTHING like Al. ;)

I just like boyscouts, I guess. Heck, I married an Eagle Scout who collects Warhammer 40K figures.

As far as Landsmeet goes and his dumping of the non-human/mage PC...., it pissed me off at first, but I realized it was entirely within character for this flawed, duty-driven YOUNG man to do what he did. Subsequent play-throughs, I bite the bullet and tell him everyone's out for themselves. Voila, no whining.

Also, dunno if any of you have ever gotten this dialogue, but Wynne offers to knit Sten a cloak "because he looks cold." I think Al's justified in asking her to mend a shirt.

It's not the food that worries me as much as the things the food attracts.  Although with all the alcohol, I doubt there's much left alive in there.  Still...no, can't do it.

Alistair gives indeed a 'real' feeling. And he's the most accessable (sp?) when it comes to his emotions. I'm seriously not into macho types. I don't think he's that whiny at all: he has just lost his 'family' (take a look at his nightmare), or at least those who cared about him and he's insecure. And he's got a lovely sense of humor. And well... the accent is totally hawt too (yeah I know, also the wrong side of the pond here XD)

Yeah, I'm really curious if English ladies like Alistair's voice as much as we do.  When guys talk here, it's like yeah whatever, I hear that accent all the time.  But when a Brit says something, no matter how silly or trivial it is, I'm like drooling all over and swooning. Posted Image  It's so embarassing. This is why Americans like you really exasperate me.

Sigh.

Edit: Nevermind, not even worth a comment.Posted Image

Uh... what?

As far as Southern accents... I live in Texas.  I actually like a good Southern accent.

I have a Houstonian accent.  Which is plain Midwest with a few mispronounciations.

So I was thinking, what if Alistair was in a band? I was thinking about this. Chicks dig Alistair because of his accent and his doofus charm right? Now look at Gene Simmons, not an attractive man, but he's attractive due to KISS.

So if Alistair was in a band, maybe the Ferelen Funk Five or something, all hope for regular guys would be lost.

If you're referring to my last post, I deleted it thinking it was best to take the high-road in that situation.  Yeah, I'm from the South as well and of course have that southern drawl too.  I have no problem with the southern drawl personally, but hearing men with other dialects speak (especially European men) is just very appealing to me, since I hear the whole southern thing all the time anyway.

You know, reading this it occurs to me what a sucker I am for "the voice". And accent isn' it, or isn't all of it anyway.

The first time was... Valen Shadowbreath, anybody? The voice had me right away

Why does that name ring a bell?

Edit: It was the guy from NWN.  I thought so.  Now I remember his voice.  Oh yeah, I remember really falling for that guy (despite the tail Posted Image).

I'm a Brit and I love the way Alistair talks.

BTW I understand Steve Valentine's from Glasgow, and the glaswegian accent is very different from Al's which is more Queen's English with an attitude. And, it's not just the accent you know, but the entonation, enunciation and last, but not least, the wit.

Yes! I agree completely! I love in particular where he says "Make fun of youuu dear lady? Perish the thought!" so cute! And some of the noises he makes--like, the conversation between him and shale about painful screams or whatever--priceless. And coupled with his characters puppy dog expressions = win  =p

4) He doesn't shirk his responsibilities, though? .

My only beef with the crybaby...
Up to that *atleast first paythrough* I found him funny and amusing. Got old fast though, 12 and counting I wannna stab him in the eye!
If I play a goodietwoshoes, I find him okey, my assassin hates hits whiny guts...

He does very much shirk his responsibilities..
The party leader saves Loggies life, to use him as darkspawnfodder, and Crybaby shirks ALL responsibilities, to the Wardens, Ferelden, Duncan and everything, just because he's pissed at ONE character, the fresh warden recruit... I mean... Doh!
Sure refuse working with the PC but leave the world and Duncans memories and all to rot? Yeah he must have really loved Duncan to smother alll he stands for like that! Not selfish at all... If he'd left the Party but fought the Darkspawn anyway he'd be okey and even smart, but as it is? Pffft... Pissant!
Noone can make a defense of that action sound like anything but the act of a selfish piece of **** crybaby! End of all reasonable discussion!

Edit: Why on earth can't we write faeces by it's modern english name? Is this an "under 12" gameforum or a forum for a M- and 18+ rated game?
Silly ffs...  Not like human dung is a very foul and evil word.... *sigh* Americans...

You don't even know how much it pains me not to have Alistair in my party at the moment. I'm a mage so I need a rogue, and I think Oghren and Shale deserve to explore the Deep Roads. But seriously he's cute with an excellently sarcastic sense of humor.

Not to mention I felt giddy (literally giddy) when I was flirting with him. My bf thought I was crazy; I kept going omg he's so hot!

If he's dying too much, you've done something wrong. Maybe check his tactics?

Also every so often when I click on him, he will go "Yeeeeeees?" I crack up every time. It the most endearing thing I've ever had in a video game. Mmmm Alistair.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the Deep Roads.  You just have to have Shale and Oghren with you in the Deep Roads. Which of course only leaves one slot open.  I can't stand not having Alistair in my group, so I usually take Alistair then when we've completed the Deep Roads quest, I leave Shale and grab Zev and go unlock all the chests.  Yes, it's twice the work, but I just can't leave Ali behind.  Besides he's almost always the last one standing, so without him my party is actually pretty weak (my pc is an elven mage).

And don't get me started on the Fade.  Complete torture to have to go it alone for so long without Ali. Posted Image

Oh, hey - well if this helps any: you don't actually need to take Shale with you all the way through the Deep Roads. There is a point before you get to the Anvil that you will be kicked to the mandatory party selection screen and then have to choose new members (Oghren being required of course). It happens around when you run into Branka or after you run the trapped gauntlet (can't remember exactly which, but hey - close enough imo). As far as I can tell, Shale's only new dialogue options occur when you actually bring her before Caridin. Prior to that, you basically get nothing interesting out of her the rest of the time as far as I can tell (except for party banter). Basically, you could have Alistair with you practically the whole way through, except for that bit at the end.

Why do people like any of the characters?  Certain traits will appeal or repel in any of them.  You could look at any of them.  On my bad days, Wynne is insufferably smug.  Sten is arrogant and pretentious.  Alistair is spineless, and passive aggressive.  Morrigan is a unmitigated harridan.  Leliana is a stifling attention wh*re.  Shale is an emo wanna be hardass.  Zevran is a sleazy dilettante.  Only Dog and Ohgren are exactly what they appear to be, hehe.

They all have negative traits.  Each player will find some of those traits more or less annoying, and have a lower or higher threshold accordingly.  I personally cannot stand Morrigan.  I don't care how much side boob you get, it won't make up for her insufferable melodramatic personality constantly questioning, belittling and haranguing me.  Your mileage may vary.

People keep bringing up the son of the king thing as an example of Alistair's duplicitous nature.  Really?  I just finished a city elf playthrough and we made it to the Alienage before he found out I was previously engaged (and he was a tad surprised).  You have the option through the whole game to lie and cheat, swindle and kill and can be a right git to everyone you meet.  Allow some other characters their moral flaws.

In literal fact, Alistair explains why he doesn't tell you.  It doesn't make any difference to him who his father was.  This is a man who has had it hammered home his entire life that he will never, under any circumstances, ever be in the running for the throne.  A hidden heir can foster rebellions, cause unrest and topple the existing power structure.  If you play through to an Alistair as king ending, that's exactly what it does.  His reluctance to reveal his heritage and take the throne isn't whining.  It's a survival mechanism not to tell anyone.  Grey Wardens are not necessarily good people, and the assassins, spies and blood mages in your merry band aren't the most trustworrthy to have overhearing your secrets.  It's a wise decision for him not to tell you, and a responsible one.

As for the fighting thing, my easiest and cleanest playthrough was as a tank class warrior.  It's incredibly overpowered, and setting Alistair up with good gear and a rotation of stuns and knockdowns makes him all but impossible to kill.  The only thing ever to kill him with a good set up was being chewed on by the high dragon if I couldn't break the grab.  Your milage may vary, but in terms of survivability, he's hands down one of the harder ones to kill, in my experience.
