I've tried a build where I forgo Recon Mine entirely, max proxy mine, shield boost, passive and fitness. My thinking here is that Recon Mine, while a powerful debuffer, has a cooldown nearly twice as long as that of proxy mine, and that extra time spent could be used to buff teammates' shields and your own or to create an instantaneous tech burst rather than waiting to detonate the mine.
Then again, my playstyle with VolGineer is much more aggressive than what others take. I go with the Disciple and Hurricane on ULM, so I can keep a 200 pct cooldown. But it's incredibly fun taking the aggressive route with the little guy, and if I play support for a glass cannon character, I'm going to be spamming shield boost almost constantly, so Recon Mine will just slow me down.
Volus Engineer Build?

I personally go 6/6/6/6/0 shields and health is so low there is no point to me on upgrading them. But, the reason I like this build which rapes all the time I get around 60k+ points at the end of each match cause I use this with acolyte pistol which removes the shields of all enemy's and I just blow up recon mine which wipes them all out. GETH GETS OWNED REALLY REALLY GREATLY

I run the build similarly, and carry the wraith. I usually rely on RoadGGG to defend me from larger predators.

I disregard proxy mine.
That is what I did in my build. I am too busy using Shield restore and looking for the best place to toss recon mine. Also despite the fact that fitness upgrades don't look too good they do help enough to keep you alive and be able to regen shields for attacks you may other wise go down.

I use this build. Do what you like. Everyone plays different.
Proxy: radius, damage. Skip 6.
Recon: radius, damage, damage.
Shield Boost: Only 3.(If you spam it, why go higher?)
Passive: Weight, shields(make up for 3 in SB), either choice for 6. I prefer weight. Skip to add to proxy mine if you like that more.
Fitness: All health.
Weapons: GPS with a Hornet(ulm) as a sidearm(just in case)
This build hasn't failed me yet. Good for teamplay or solo against any faction.

If you're getting shot at, you're playing the character to it's fullest potential. You have nearly unlimited shields! Get out there and unleash hell!!!

You ARE going to get shot at, at some point in time. A bit more defense can mean the difference between a face on the ground rezed 3 -4 times a game guy to a guy that stays on his feet more. As others have said though it all depends on if you want to be a bit more ballsy or not.

I feel that skipping Prox mine is doing a disservice to yourself and the team. It's not just about the damage boost, Prox mine is also when of the best ways of staggering things in the game. More than a few times have I been left by myself and rounded a corner to find some baseline mooks in my face, Prox mine to the rescue! Keeps them nice and staggered while I clean up with my hornet.
that being said, I'm also running the build Cheesylover posted.

- Recon Mine up to rank 6 Radius - Damage - Scan Enemies take more damage and decreese speed.
-Proxy mine Rank 5 Radius - Enemies take 20% more damage
-Shield boost up to rank 6 Radius - and the other 2 bottom one.
-Volus traning rank 5 Power damage and weight - Power damage
-Fitnes rank 3 (rank 6 of armor it gives only 35% of bonus armor, wich is nothing, rather go with somthing else and put Cyclonic modulator on him)
Great build for platinum.
Roll allot, use cloak as much as possible, debuf with proxy and kill with Recon mines.
For weapons, go or with a Hurricane (armor pierce / Stability) or Piranha (Armor Pierce mod / Smart Choke) or Raptor (Barrel / Armor pierce) or instead of raptor go with the Indra (Barrel/Armor Pierce).
If you dont have indra on at least rank 5, just go with the raptor X, its lighter and pack a stronger punch.

I recommend 6/6/6/6/0 or 6/6/6/5/3 if you really want some extra health. Going further into Fitness isn't going to save you from dying almost ever with this guy. You're basically as survivable with 6 in Fitness as you are 0, on Gold/Platinum.

I use the same build as the OP and it works rather well on gold. I use the Hurricane with ULWM and AP barrel, and scorpion with ULWM and High cal barrel (not the new one to be clear), usually with cryo ammo. Hold down melee and phantoms are suddenly dumbfounded as to how to get to your squishy 3 foot mass.
Great with a team of vorcha and/or paladins as well!
