So I'm starting my second playthough and I've reached Lothering. Didn't use Sten much the first time round - the whole child-killer thing put me off. This time I thought I'd try talking to him a bit more, but after my initial conversation with him I felt a much stronger urge to just leave him to rot in his cage (I mean, we are all full-up on the coppin' an attitude thing now that Morrigan is coming along). Anyone feel the same way? Disagree?

But what is it that makes him awesome? Please, I want to understand:huh:

Once you do his personal quest he kinda lightens up a bit.

He is the only one you can have a serious discussion with. That in itself warrants a place.

I dunno, the whole child-killer thing is a mighty big minus in his copy-book. There's nothing about him (initially) that makes me want to get to know him.

At first, you will have trouble understanding Sten way of thinking and life, but keep conversing with him. He is the most interesting of your companions. Level him up properly and he makes an excellent warrior.

I find Sten fascinating. He's an intelligent and interesting character whose value system completely differs from mine (and some of my characters'). Perhaps that is the reason why his friendship came to mean so much to me (and some of my characters) by the end of the game. It takes time and effort to get there, but I find that it's worth it.

My only real complaint about Sten as a character is that he seems to die very, very easily early on. It gets better later, but he is a bit of a disappointment performance-wise until then.

I've taken him along with two different main characters and they both just found him rude, narrow-minded, and creepy. He didn't last long in the party. At camp he's kind of funny, but in the way that an idiot is funny rather than like Morrigan or even Alistair, who are both witty. Also, as mentioned, Sten got "injured" pretty quickly, no matter what armor I put on him or what I asked him to do.

Because Sten is willing to stand up to you where necessary; a fairly admirable trait in my opinion.

I guess the problem is I don't really want to get to know him with the way he comes across at the beginning. I'm thinking more along the lines of "blight take him", doesn't help him that Morrigan gets up on her high horse about him and the chantry either. Guess he stays in his cage for now...

The thing that made me curious about him was his reaction after the crime. Not that many murderers stick around on the crime scene for days afterwards waiting for the patrol to put them in jail. Was enough to make me wonder why he did what he did.

And what's interesting is that he agrees with you.

Sten is pretty awesome in my opinion. The banter he has with the other party members while you travel is pretty great, and I'm into his deep seeded sense of honnor. As far as the murder goes he turned himself in and was accepting of his fate. He knew he had done something wrong and his only real drive to join you in the first place is to face almost certain doom against the blight in order to repent for his crimes. He may be cold at first but thats because of his cultural background. The dude wanted to die because he had lost his honnor in a few ways, and through the course of the adventure you have the opportunity to help him regain that lost honnor.

I guess I'm just not curious enough. Furthermore, he's got the same name as my mother's third husband... it's just not right.

Ok, I'll come out and ask why he killed that family. This is the spoiler forum after all, and unless there was a really good reason for that act, I just don't to associate with the guy.

Scandinavian, eh?

I always thought that (Stens title) put an extra flavor on Shales slight crush.

I take Sten along because he's the only one who seems to understand that my Mabari is a killing machine, not a lapdog. They get along very well.

the decision is likely to be influenced by the background of your character, too. E.g. my city elf had her own share of murder rampage and so she was more inclined to think there may be valid reasons for such things or at least reasons worth learning. My human noble was fresh on receiving end of having her own family murdered though, little kids and all, so she'd have nothing to do with a person like that.

Yeah, I'm a scandi. Maybe that's why I much prefer the boozy, viking dwarf with the braided beard. The "cous" part of cousland is slang for the female genitalia where I live... it's not easy having to play these foreign games ;-)

The thing about sten, is there is alot more to him than what you see at first..he's not the cold blooded murderer as he's introduced as, there was a reason for it which he regrets....but you wont learn that if you don't take him along. You also learn alot of his culture and such....and the banter between him, and morrigan is a riot!

Well my character is a city elf as well, and he's a bit put off by the family-murderer thing, because he really values blood-ties and dislikes the abuse of power.

I use Sten every so often. It just depends on what I'm needing for a certain fight. I tend to use Shale more often though.

He and his scouting squad were attacked by darkspawn, he was the only survivor. Their bodies were picked over for loot by scavengers. Then some farmers found them and realized Sten was alive, so they took him back to their farmhold to take care of him. When he woke up, his sword was gone, he panicked and killed everyone around him. Then when he realized what he'd done, he stayed at the farm until templars came to see what happened, and he chose not to resist arrest. When he's in the cage he will refuse any offers of food and water and believes that being eaten by darkspawn is his just desert. You get him to join you by trying to convince him to do some good with his death, that is, fight the horde to protect innocents in order to regain his lost honor.

Re: the sword, because he was assigned to be a warrior in Qunari society, losing his sword is like abandoning the Qun. He panicked when he couldn't find it and believed the farmers were keeping it from him, though later in the cage he acknowledges that such a notion is ridiculous and that they had no reason to hide his sword. This is why he submits to punishment, because he believes he has dishonored his people.

I think he's hilarious. He and Dog have some really entertaining interactions. And... 'it's a wonder why you even speak sometimes.'

Sten and my PC are BFF :] But as a female city elf my PC had done a lot of murdering herself and so she isn't quick to judge.
