The OP can't seem to get past what Sten did, and seems to be looking for us to help get past it. I have no more problem bringing him along than, say, killer-for-hire Zevran. That's no knock on Zevran, mind; the same argument could be made about Morrigan. If it bothers you that much, leave him in his cage and move on.
Myself, I still want an "Alistair, get out of here, you idiot" option.
Do people take Sten along?

No, actually, I've long since realised that I just don't want Sten along and sure enough I've moved on from Lothering without him. Now I'm just arguing with people for the hell of it/to clear up misunderstandings.

Ok, well I got to admit out of all my upcoming playthroughs I intend to complete, there is only 1 I know of that will leave him there and funnily enough like your own, it's a City Elf. A female one that ain't too trusting on men, even stupid whiny blond templars (although she will soften to him in time). So yeah, big bad brutish qunari (in her mind), meh it don't matter what Morrigan and Leli say, he ain't coming along, in fact am tempted to just have it that she totally ignores him (thus don't have to go through the whole conversation where Morrigan and Leli state reasons for letting him free.
Rest of my characters will all take him on for one reason or another.
