What causes them to become possesed? Does it just happen randomly or is there something that triggers it.

It seemed random to me. Sometimes, possessed enemies come from across the map, so they hadn't probably even taken fire. Sometimes, a 'possession' will happen in front of you, so I don't think they spawn possessed. I don't think there's any reasoning behind it. Probably just random.
