This fight is a long one, which means that a Warrior/Rogue heavy group will be hard pressed, especially considering the number of enemies and having team mates. You can easily keep all the militial alive if you have a Mage with the heal spell. The length of the fight means you need lots of mana.

Cone of cold was amazingly helpful here, taking 4 or even 6-7 enemies out of the fray for 50% of the time or more is almost too good. The barricades funnel them into perfect blobs here, something that open terrain hinders.

You get to leave combat (heal up, raise dead) on the landing between the town and the water mill. So you really on have two large battles to get through, heal/sta/mana up, and go take care of the packs of 2 and 3. Just took me like 5 or so trips, easy with the dog cause of his movement speed. Id just leave everyone up with the nights and run the dog to collect zombies.

I think this quest most certainly has the possibility to bug, i did the event, took mabye 30 minutes to clear the zombies... then nothing, the cinematic didnt pop up, but no zombies came either. So i left my game on and went upstairs to eat dinner and watch tv (hour and a half) came back, still there, no change, so ya it bugs, if i were you id save prior to starting the event.

Yeah I think mines bugged or something... took a few trys (playing on hard) but I managed to get through the wave after the scout cutseen without anyone in my party dying at least. The milita are pretty squish and I don't think you can keep any of them up without a healer, at least not on Hard, and I refuse lower the difficulty setting for the 1st play through just to see what might happen if I keep them up.

Anyway, all the zombies on the bottom stopped coming, I sat there for a few minutes, but nothing happened, went back up top and killed more zombies for about 6-7 mins, paused the game and came here...

LOL.... so I managed to fix my "bug".  I ran back down, ran in a few circles to see if I needed to pass through some spot to trigger the cutseen, but nothing happened.   Then I decided to run all around the dock area and see any zombies were hidding out, which there was, just one lone little zombie.  I quickly hacked him apart and 10 seconds later, it was dawn.

Now that thats cleared up I think i'll get some sleep and re-load from an older save and see if I can't keep the named Milita guys up if I spec Morg for a heal instead of cone of cold.

I kinda cheated this, i let the militia die and i run back up the hill to the knights. I get a few of the monsters to follow me to the knights and kill them up there. then i go back down a grab a few more and bring them back up the hill. Takes awhile but it was the only way i was able to kill the monsters and i also did not have any healers at the time because redcliffe was the first area i went to after lothering.

Finally I made it yesterday. The knights were all alive, but unfortunately only one militia has survived, the messenger, because he was on the top of the path.

After several waves in the second battle, zombies stopped coming. Only one-two came to the knights, but they killed them easily. When I asked any NPC, they told me that there might be more of them around, so I started going around the docks, and I really have found two zombies in the directions where they came before. After killing them the cutscene came, and the battle was over. So my guess is that you need to kill the "source". At least it worked to me.

I did this quest 4 times - died 3 times and on the fourth i survived the attack from the zombies, but all of the militia men died. I could not bear that so i re-laoded prior to the attack.

I read a IGN Article where Dwyn was actually standing with the militia men helping them fight, but during my fights he was standing with the knights as well as the Elf Archer....

I too only get the "Knights guard the path" option when the militia man comes to warn me. Does anyone else get Dwyn standing with the knights?

Anyway, for my own stonewall problem. Beyond the defense of the town, at the castle courtyard, there's an encounter with several lesser undead and a Revenant. This thing has managed to wipe my party even after I've taken out all the lesser undead around him, and I'm not even getting close as far as his health goes. Anyone get past him?

(edit) Grr. First they don't show my post, then they don't let me delete my second, unnecessary post. The old forum software was a -lot- better. Sorry, all.

The revenant fight was really difficult. I went through the town defence without any problems but the revanant fight did put up a challenge. If you position your party members right and have a lot of healing / potions available, you can get this fight done. It just takes a lot of time :P

I ended up doing this by starting with the knights first. The Scout then asks you to come down and help at the chantry. I started ranged attacks from up the hill, right next to where the scout stops, and then sent in two of my fighters. If you hit the TAB button you can see all the names, and more importantly, the health of everyone good and bad. There are two yellow walking dead which just tear everyone up. Focus on them first. (I suspect this is why the militia gets torn up so quickly.  When I focused on the yellows first, I ended the battle with Thomas, Murdoc, about 3 archers, and about 4 militia guys all alive.)

The knock downs and crowd control help a lot. You should be pausing the game like every 4 seconds (about the time of a turn) in order to get your people to fight efficiently. I had the mage healing (particularly Murdoc and Thomas) and drinking potions. You will need a lot of healing and mana potions. Try and have most of your party focus on one target at a time. Eventually, the zombies tend to get down to around 6 or so, at which point I brought the rest of my party into the fortification. Once you get to around 6 or so zombies left, for every zombie that falls another will come running in.  I spent so much of the time paused I am not sure how long it took. My best guess is about 20 zombies running into the battle at the Chantry. (I was a little surprised how short it was, based on the descriptions here).

Tips:

Get all the extras that help as descibed above (oil, dwarf, elf, etc...)

Don't bother trying to clog the holes in the barricades with your fighters, they just run right by (poor programming).

Your character's pathing gets them confused with all the other militia there, good idea to manually instruct them who to attack.  Try to prevent them from running around all the blue militia by attacking the closest. It does get to be a big time waste if you let it go too long.

BE SURE TO GRAB LOOT FROM THE DEAD DURING COMBAT:  The dead brop a bunch of stuff, I thought I could pick it up after the fight was won, BUT the cut scene of the morning just started before I could grab it. When the cut scene was done, there was no lewt to gather. WTF? SUPER poor programming, after that long hard fight getting no loot sucks.  Bio-ware should fire whoever was in charge of this mini event, or at least cut off a little finger. It would serve as a good example to the other programmers of the high standards of bio-ware.

So I have DA:O on PC and I am playing on normal. I have Alistar, Morgan and Lelainia in my party.

I did get the smity to fix the militia weapons, could not get the holy blessing, but did get the dwarf to join the fight. So 2 out of 3 not a bad round. I can win the battle with the knights fairly easily. A knight or so dies but nothing to horrible. I put Leliania on archery duty while my character (warrior) and Alistar runs in being supported by Morgan's magic. Like I said The Knight battle goes fine but the militia battle I get my butt kicked everytime. I have tried like 6 times and I am just frustarted. I have killed somewhere in the neighborhood of 12-14 undead and by my count there are 8-10 left and it looked like more were spawning. I only have 2 healing poultrices and 6 lesser poutrices as there was no where to buy any in town.

So advice here?

Thanks a bunch!

There are two Yellow name walking corpses (very tough). Use TAB to see the names, focus on the yellow ones first.

Handling phase 2 (a different- less humane approach)

Once you get to the archer that came up to get you (he'll have the quest icon floating above him) I just stopped there and set all my people to ranged attack and peppered the dead until they'd eventually close in (yes- all of the militia died)

My problem now is no more were coming down below so I went back up to the knights who still fight 2 zombies every 3 minutes or so...it's been about an hour now and it's really getting boring. Anyone else know what the deal is?

I thought the same thing, but I ran around and found that a couple walking dead didn't actually leave their spawn point. So I killed em and then the cinematic popped.

*phew* finally did it with the help of this thread.

background: went to redcliff right after the first night at your camp. Myself human warrior sword and board/tank, dogmeat- my dog, Morrigan (was able to level her on first wave and give her basic heal spell- not really needed however), and Lelianna (levelled shortly after second wave and I gave her melee archery so I wouldn't have to bother fumbling with switching weapons or putting in a trigger for that). I did not get the 3 allies, in fact I killed them (they didn't like my intimidate skill hehe), did not get any protection for the knights, or that sword (no idea you could get- I went for the kiss lol), but I did recruit that elf.

Basically I sacrificed the militia and stayed on the pathway leading down (where my save point was). I set up my triggers much better now I know a little more about it. The hard part is so many choices, so few triggers. It's tough deciding what the best one is. But it does seem to help my battles (better cc and dps). Although my dog seems to be pulling alot of aggro now. Probably due to his aoe debuff. So I healed him a bit with Marianna.

long story short it's easy if you stay up top and pull a few at a time.

The first wave (the initial one that slaughters the militia) will all pull, so if you need a little help, back up to the knights. Otherwise just stay up top and have an archer pull one (sometimes 2 or 3 come up) at a time. At no point did I fight more than 4 at a time other than the initial pull. During the initial pull I did go up top to get assistance from the knights. While I was up there I killed all the guys coming down the path. Eventually they stopped coming, and I went down the patch and pulled them up a few at at time. Eventually they stopped. Still didn't get a loading screen, had to go into town and kill a few stragglers. And that was it.

Now onto the next part...

i died the first two times. U just gotta really micromanage ur party. If u have morrigan, make use of all her spells. Try concentrarting on 1 enemy flanking it with ur melee characters. last but not least, drink lotsa potions.

Yeah, micromanaging is key. I try to keep my mage/archer up on the hill with a hold command and use my two warriors as tanks a little lower. Bringing them down the hill can trigger too many undead attacking at once. Also, using your mage to heal the militia & your characters is helpful too. Lots of pause and plan, pause and plan.

OK so I died two times before I finally beat this and here is what I did:

After the initial fight up at the top of the hill, I equipped all my party members except Mr. Bigglesworth(My dog) with bows and got just close enough to activate a few zombies at a time and shot them from the hill. then when I needed to heal just run up the hill heal up then run back down and shoot a few more switching to melee weapons if they get too close. Eventually I got them all and it was rather easy, The mistake is running down the hill full blast and into the fray because you will be swarmed and you will die. You have to methodically and carefully take them out a few at a time.

On Normal setting.

What you have to do during second phase and in all fights really, is to concentrate fire on one zombie first, then everyone attacks a particular second zombie. This way they go down fast and your guys take less damage.

Use your mass stun spells (mind Blast) when you can.

This quest is beyond bugged. I'm glad that I can't advance in my game because a game with a monster budget couldn't afford to QA a quest so early in the game.

hardest part of the game, you really have to play it well, i put mine on easy and had my elemental mage splash the zombies with 0 friendly file. :( and i still lost some party members.

Having the corpses keep spawning forever and ever is definitely a bug, but there are also a whole lot of corpses to get through.

Like how many, approximately?  How would you know if this part is bugged?

As far as I can tell from my four tries so far, this quest is fairly impossible.  Having to use MMO tactics that people describe here like "drawing one or two away at a time" and running away constantly to heal is not the way the game was meant to be played.  It's either bugged or it's a poorly designed challenge; either way this quest has made this game go straight from the most enjoyable singleplayer experience since KoTOR to wanting to say "screw it" and go back to playing Borderlands.

I am really frustrated with this one as well - I played for a long time, all the militia died. No more came from the lake (though the one NPC who survived kept insisting he heard something). The knight I asked about what I could do  never brought up the oil, either. I set it on easy and it didn't help. I searched for trapped enemies and couldn't find any. How do you know when to head back up the hill? Do they let you know or just let you wonder about it? I like directions. They're helpful.

I'm really frustrated right now. I like challenging, not impossible. Never mind my pet peeve about babysitting plot-specific npcs... *grumble*

Anyway, as for my own Redcliffe stonewall, later on in the Courtyard in the castle, I've run into an encounter with several normal undead and a Revenant. This Revenant seems nearly unbeatable at my level, and even after managing to keep my people alive and kill off all the lesser undead, the Revenant is still wiping my whole party. Anyone get past him?

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but the knights are just outside the gate, just waiting to jump on the Revenant. Flip the nearby switch and they'll all come rushing in. The knight captain should have mentioned the gate in his dialogue before going into the castle. Also, he's a REALLY good tank against Revenant. A magic bullet almost.

Yeah, Ser ---- (whatever his name is) is a great tank. I would send your party at the archers while the knights go for the big nasty. The archers do a lot of damage but die rapidly, so it helps to rid yourself of them early. Once you finish on the stairs, the knights should have sufficient attention from the other undead, so you can waltz in and clean up as they take most of the damage for you.
