Don't get me wrong: I love the game so far. Have been spending hours upon hours playing it at a time. But I'm getting a little annoyed that we can't completely build up on the skills and abilities of the secondary characters, like in Mass Effect where characters would have all their points unlocked for what level they are but they would be waiting to be assigned by you so you could make your characters however you wanted them to be.

So I have to ask...why didn't this come back in Dragon Age Origins?

There is a total respec mod (for the PC), which supposedly resets all skills, talents, and specializations. I didn't use it myself, but you may find it HERE.
