Death of the author can apply to any text. I'd recommend it as the starting point of an analysis. The context may be important, but the quote is accurate while standing alone as well.ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...
Yeah, in this instance context is hella-important.Upsettingshorts wrote...

In this case, it isn't textual criticism that is at stake anyway. It is out of context attribution of a quote given as an endorsement of a different, broader position. That's a different matter.

That would help narrow the gap between the sexualization of female characters and the lack thereof among males, to be sure.
You know, I always wonder why women (IRL) are allowed to have these two bulges under their shirt and it's okay, but can I wear spandex? Nooo...
Moreover, I think the original context did support death of author generally, which is why I used it.Maria Caliban wrote...

Was it opportunisitic? Yes. Was it manipulative? I don't see how.Upsettingshorts wrote...

Yes she did. She recognised that her intent, as the writer, didn't matter when considering how the content was interpreted....when it's used as an endorsement of Sylvius' position regarding the (hidden) writer intent when it comes to silent protagonist dialogues. That implication is disingenuous, as Mary said no such thing in the original statement.
Broader, yes. Different, no.In this case, it isn't textual criticism that is at stake anyway. It is out of context attribution of a quote given as an endorsement of a different, broader position. That's a different matter.

I thinl there's a transgender human in DA2, I think for 1 gold. And I know there's one in Origins, if you pick a little of both.thats1evildude wrote...

Right. What I'm saying is that the reason why a transgendered elf is working at the Blooming Rose and not, say, a transgendered ANYTHING ELSE is because it's a running gag in fantasy that elves are all effeminate. They made this joke in DAO as well.
Zevran: Hello, my stocky little friend!
Oghren: Huh. You got small breasts for a gal.
Regardless of whether she's an in-joke or not, she's still proof that transgendered people do exist in Thedas so bringing another into the setting isn't so crazy.thats1evildude wrote...

Of course it won't, but my example was assuming Anders is the funny womanizer from Awakening and that Dragon Age 2 had romance options work for both genders regardless of Hawke's gender. So it's not a case of Anders not being interested, it's a case of Anders either not really exploring that part of his sexuality before or even not know about it. Both of those things DO happen in the real world. And have people have mentioned, sexual orientation isn't static.motomotogirl wrote...
Well, if someone genuinely prefers a different gender, you're not going to convince him/her otherwise. Only way this could work is something like...
Anders: I'm sorry. I don't know if I could ever really love another man after... after losing Karl *sad face Anders*
You persist in your flirting though, and eventually win him over.
How this won't work:
Anders: I've never been with a man before and never really wanted to. Sorry... Is it enough for me to call you a friend?
You keep flirting with him and he eventually changes his mind. This does not happen in RL lol

Are you reffering to the transvestite dwarf? Because, I don't even think they got any dialogue and, once again, was played for laughs. I think they pop up again in DA2 where the same happens. I could be wrong though.Todd23 wrote...
