this is my first playthrough. I've been using Alistair as a tank and every level I wonder WHY I should put points into the Templar Spec. It just doesn't seem all that great.
Can someone break down what I am missing here?
templar spec - why?

The second ability is handy for removing nasty spells from your other party members, or to dispel whatever buffs the enemies got running.
The last one is an AoE stun/knockdown/damage/mana drain which can be very handy.

Fleapants is right, used properly, Templar abilities are a great counter for enemy mages. Being able to cleanse curse of mortality and crushing prison from party members is very helpful, and Holy Smite will stop a mage from casting spells long enough for another character to kill the mage.

The best reasons for Templar spec are the ability to wear Knight Commanders Armor, which is a massive silverite armor with 40% spell resist. This, with the Spellward, Key to the City, 1 GM Dweomer Rune and 2 Master Dweomer rune gives you 100% spell resist, making you immune to spells.
The second spell is great for when you get curse of mortality or misdirection hex cast on you, or any nasty debuff.

Didn't do it myself but heard somewhere that you can debuff whatever spell holds the werewolves when fighting zathrian

If you aren't a Mage with the Mana Alteration chain, the Templar spec is useful against other mages, and you'll encounter them rest assured.

I use it primarily for saving my characters from misdirection hex, death hex, and crushing prison. Unless it's your tank most classes that haven't been pumping con aren't going to survive a full length crushing prison so its incredibly useful in that regard. 9/10 I never bother to max the line though. There are far better ways of handling mages (arrow of slaying, over whelm, practically any 2hander talent) than wasting 3/4 of your stamina to inconvenience him then not have any left to taunt or shield bash with.

I have used it to free Witherfang, Swiftrunner, & Co from mass paralysis. They made a beeline for Zathrian and very nearly killed him before I could target him with any of my party members.

Since I've never used Alistair before, I'll do so on my next run. [Sten, anyone?]
But what spec do you mix it with? And what tactics do you employ?

I think the better question would be "Templar Spec - Why not?"
I can't help but pick a dwarf whenever I go to make a warrior, that combined with the templar spec and gear previously mentioned makes me an unstoppable killing machine capable of soloing the entire game on nightmare with my warrior.
Or they would solo the game if not for how boring that would be... I always bring along 3 party members for the chats they have, though it may as well be soloing since they usually only ever wear the gear I get them in and I do nothing more than auto level them up when the time calls for it.
Edit : Champion + Templar make a great combo, two knockdown AoEs in addition to whatever else you have.

Yeah, Templar spec is fantastic for a tankish character. Holy Smite isn't just fantastic on casters.. if you are getting pummeled by a large group of melee and need to give your healer time for spells to come off cooldowns (and are using a mod that increases health potion cooldown hehe) then Holy Smite's AE stun/knockback works amazingly well.
The magic resistances and mana burn on melee are awesome against melee/casters like Revenants too.

Templar spec is also a *great* 2nd spec choice at level 14 for a DW warrior that speced Berserking at level 7. Why? Simple: Templars can wear Templar-only armor such as Knight-Commander's Plate (40% Spell Resistance), which coupled with the Spellward amulet (30% spell resist), Keys to the City ring (4% spell resist) and three Dweomer Runes (Grandmaster + Master + Master) = 100% spell resistance. You don't need to put a single point in any Templar talents to take advantage of this, but really the last Templar talent can prove useful at times.
Really DW Berserking DPS + 100% Spell Resistance means that not only are you a mage-killer extraordinare, but your party mages can drop all kinds of AOE right on top of you for visual fun and games.
Put Champion on another warrior in your party, like Alistair. You get far more mileage out of Berserker + Templar on your DW warrior main than you'd get from Berserker + Champion, etc.
