I give up -- triggering the juicy gossip conversation with Alistair is so hit or miss with me. I'm romancing Alistair this time, and he still hasn't brought it up (dumping him way before doing his personal quest; hopefully he won't get flagged "still in love").

have you had the conversation with alistair about what it was like with the other grey wardens and he goes on to tell you about the story where the warden from the anderfels outdrank any one yet?

in my experiance the juicy gossip conversation only ever triggers after iv had that conversation I mean every play through Iv always gotten that conversation immediatly after if had the drinking contest talk

I've had every conversation possible.  My last game, the juicy gossip didn't trigger until the alienage.  I think I know what the problem is, actually.  *sigh* Time to take off a mod!

Edit: If you actually want to do the romance in a real way, I can't help you there.  I always end up dumping him when forced to choose :(

Yeah, romancing him for real would be preferable, though I have a feeling I might resort to your solution in the end. So, many thanks for suggesting it.

I've said it before, it's not like I don't like Alistair, I do. But even when the character trailers for DAO were revealed, back in Autumn, I had a feeling Zevran would be a favorite as far as romance goes. Lo and behold, I was right.

I feel bad. Alistair really is a nice guy all around. Plus, he's Maric's son. Now I feel twice as bad. :P

I never hated him, but maybe that's because of knowing long beforehand that he was a recruitable companion, and knowing what his personality would be. So, I actually spent a good while the first time through trying to figure out where to get him (stupidly not realizing I actually needed to *finish* something for him to show up). Sometimes I wonder what I would have thought of him had I not known about him beforehand. Darn those character preview videos!

That said, I'm definitely one of the people who liked him in a shallow way, and tended to pay attention to other characters more. It took a long time to realize just how much there is to him. He is my favorite character now, not just because of the romance but because he just agrees well with me. But I do love *most* of the companions.

my reaction to the zevran reveal was pretty much like all the people crying over the new Awakening characters being carbon copies of old ones based on a single line of dialogue...except unlike those people I never had an account till I got the game and thus never moaned about it on the forums

then I found out he was the gay romance option and I was even less impressed... it doesnt help I pretty much hate most bioware games iv played before this... and was convinced I was going to hate the game *shock*

The Zev fangirlsquee thread (much dreaded) from the old forums made me tired of him before the game started. But I gave him the benefit of a doubt.

He is at least in the top 5 of my favorites now.

Hehe, I almost never judge characters by one glimpse of them (so I guess I'm a better person in games than in real life >.>), since I like to figure, hey, maybe the writers actually knew what they were doing?... And I guess I'm the only one who doesn't just think of Zevran as the "gay" companion? I don't know if it's just that fact that guys have to assert their manly non-gayness, but I think it just shows poorly on the people who can't see past one very minor part of his character.

As for the Awakening characters, I think they're purposely paralleling them with Origins characters. They already said a long time ago that the characters would remind you of Origins characters on the surface, but you'd find out how different they are as you get to know them. So it seems like a no-brainer to me that there's more to them than those 30 second previews show...

Actually the more Awakening bashing I see, the more it makes me have high hopes for it. Most people's complaints are just plain dumb...

EDIT: I did, however, stay away from all fangirl squee (Zevran and Alistair) beforehand. Thank goodness for that.

His concept pretty much sealed that he would be bisexual for me, come on, rainbow-colored feathers! Though I also thought Alastair would swing both ways at that point.

Leli is the gay companion in my mind, if one has to be chosen.

But couldn't you reason that he'll just kill you in your sleep or whenever you put your guard down?

He's a paid assassin! Sorry, but I don't  buy the "I have no choice" reason. The darkspawn have no choice but to be monsters. That didn't stop my hero from mercilessly slaughtering them.

Why should Zevran get special treatment? If he was really a good guy he would have taken the right and difficult choice and stop MURDERING people for money and leave the crows. So the crows will probably have him killed?

The right thing to do isn't always the most practical thing to do.

And you know what, its straight selfish if not downright evil, that he's willing to murder other people to keep his own life.

Sacrifice sucks. But in the end you either choose to do the right thing or you choose to be selfish.

Spoken like someone who wasn't raised without parents in a ****house, starved, sold as a slave at age 7, tortured, and programmed that his only way to be a person is to excel at being a Crow.  Prison bars are sometimes in the mind, yes?  In Antiva, for another thing, assassins are accepted as a part of life and this high-minded attitude of yours would be considered bizarre.  The Crows are basically Antiva's army.  Of course, you'll never know any of this about Zevran if you don't talk to him.  When Zevran gets the chance to take a new path, he does, and he's an extremely loyal companion.

If you're going to be this dogmatic about everything in the game, you'll miss a lot.  Naturally if you cannot see your way to an RP reason to spare Zevran, it's your game.

First go round as a male char this time. Alistair is being a TOTAL ****. I get him back from hostile to neutral and then boom, back at hostile again. Is it cause Morrigan is sleeping with me ? you gotta wonder :P At any rate, he certainly has a backbone when he's pissed off...makes me regret marrying him on two other chars.

Just got Zev in the game and it's interesting to flirt with him as a guy but I'm playing hard to get because I want the massage conversation this go round. Leli basically yelled at me in public for Morrigan--she's much more fun jealous than she is usually. Still tho, I think this is gonna be my only guy character

Now I can see why you sympathize with Zevran. However no amount of torment justifies murder. Zevran is a murderer no matter what you say. He kills for his own selfish well-being. Would your character murder innocents to stay alive?

And just so you know, in the end, my hero sacrificed himself for all of Thedas.

I walk the talk.

Now, my hero , given the situation, will still cut Zevran's throat every time.

As far as my hero knows Zevran is a paid assassin/murdererer sent to take his life. Anything he tells me can be but part of an elaborate lie.

With the cutting of Zevran's throat, the world has one less murderer, and my party's camp will remain safe.

Honestly it doesn't make sense that one would spare Zevran after he tried to cut your throat! If you lose the battle does he show YOU any mercy? I for one know he doesn't, because I lost that battle the first time. (i am not the best strategist, but that is besides the point) My character went down on his knees, looked Zevran straight in the eyes, and the elf still sliced his throat like no one's business. That's what a darkspawn would do btw.

No mercy.

No mercy.

[JollyJenkins shakes his head.]

He's a cold blooded murderer. No different from the blood-lust darkspawn to be honest.

If you would not spare a darkspawn, why should you spare Zevran?

I take it you don't have Leliana in your party, either? Or Morrigan? Or Sten? Or Shale? Or Oghren? All of them murdered innocents. I assume it was just your PC, Alistair and Wynne around the fire, reciting the Canticle of Threnodies in pious tones.

I just don't buy that you're here for honest discussion about the character, not after your last post. At any rate, since you're so dogmatic about it, there's nothing much else to discuss anyway.

Ignoring some of the above topics...
I need some tips.
I had F'd up my playthrough to compleet the Zevran romance. So I reloaded WAY back in the game, and jut got to the point after Talsien where I F'd it all up.

So now I'm looking for some pointers so I don't do this again.
I refused going to the tent when the massage scene came up. And haven't asked him to tent.
We just killed Talsien, and I refused the earring (I don't want it if it doesn't mean anything line)
Zevran is currently at 94 Love.
So the PC hasn't slept with him, and refused the earring.

Where to go from here to finish out the Zevran Romance playthrough?

EDIT: Yeah to 100 pages!

Now you just have to try asking him to your tent. After you do that, ask him again to discuss something private and you'll see a new dialogue option. Go ahead and ask him about it, and make sure you're sitting down while you do. :P
Oh, and DON'T pick the "I feel the same way" option in that second dialogue, pick one that sounds less certain. If you do that, things should work out just fine!

Yay everyone on 100 pages!

Hahahahaha, tell Greagoir at the end of the broken circle that you all may regret it if you let one blood mage live, and see how Wynne feels about killing innocents.

Edit: Not everyone likes Zevran -- in fact, apparently many people don't like him.  He doesn't put on a pretty front, that's for sure, and if you leave him at the camp, you don't hear him in the various zones.  He's a good one to have on your side, for sure, whether he's telling people to treat you with respect, threatening to slit Anora's throat and throw her in the river, pointing out why one of the contenders to the throne in Orzammar is unsuitable, pleading for mercy for the lives of others when he thinks you're being too brutal . .  .

He's a very deep and complex character, and you have to get beyond some of the surface ugliness.  When you listen to the banter and hear him either deflect or just accept what is being said with good humor and grace, it's hard to continue disliking him, I think.  As a romance character, you do not get the pretty words that you get with Alistair or Leliana.  But you do get a very loyal and faithful partner who would take the world on for just another day by your side.

One other thing . . . If you haven't done this through yet.  After the first offering of the earring, if you're in camp, he will thank you for freeing him from the crows.  At that point, do NOT tell him you think you're more than friends.  Just tell him you consider him a friend as well.  It's a non-romance declaration, but it lets you know just how much you mean to him, lover or friend.

No, quite different.  Then a darkspawn would eat you.

You get a cutscene for losing??  If there's a cutscene, I'm going to have to reload and let Zevran kill me.

Oh, and if you cut Zevran's throat on the first meeting of him, you just helped him accomplish his goal for that encounter. So you did him right, I suppose. I will give you that!
