And yes, you can refuse it in a way that is telling him you don't want it.  And it doesn't end the relationship at that point (if you refuse it at the second offer, it does end the relationship).

That's kind of interesting... he must really want to give the Warden that earring... Image IPB

Am I the only one who thinks it's kind of hilarious when he snaps at you for being frustrating at that point? He essentially goes "What, you loot everything that isn't nailed down, but you don't want this? *verbally throws hands up in the air* Fine! Be that way!"

As the player, I did find that pretty funny. XD  I don't think my Warden did, though. ;D

It was very alarming. :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

Especially if your PC isn't the type to push the "you seem like you want to talk" option... Image IPB
(You can imagine how well Alessar takes that particular conversation T_T)

Edit: whoa, pagetopper!  Umm, umm, kiss required.

Yeah, alarming like panic, sobbing into bedroll in tent and everything!

@Aroihkin - the line about looting would be very hilarious if the situation was not that serious. Or if the game let you say something equally funny, but that would blow up the whole situation into joke and how do you resolve it in future to be one of the highlights of relationship?

Edit: not top, but let's have a kiss anyway :D

For our "frustrated" Wardens, the ones who are weary of the dance, I would imagine Zevran comes away with the realization that he can't get away with skirting the issue anymore, and that (putting it a bit flippantly) it's time to put up or shut up.    It may force him to think very hard about exactly what he wants/expects out of the relationship at this point, which leads naturally (IMO) into his tent-refusal.)

But, that doesn't seem to be the case.  Whatever makes him think about his feelings and refuse the tent, it's not the earring refusal.  He thinks about his feelings and refuses the tent if you accept the earring.

That's what I was trying to say earlier.   I can see why wardens would refuse the earring, thinking that it'll make him confront his feelings.  But that's not what happens.   It makes no difference to him. (Which shows that he's not that upset by the earring refusal either.  At least not enough to avoid facing his feelings, and talking to you about them).

Don't want to have to imagine it!  *puppy-dog eyes*

The "you pick up every other bit of loot" line is funny, but also makes it sound like he's not sure why you're refusing, which should be pretty clear in-game.  In my fic maybe not because Blair snarks that he thought the going rate for saving someone from the Crows was higher than that.  But it's not done yet.  *pokes fic*

My first Warden to get that far was basically me anyway, as a horrible pun that couldn't be resisted -- my CE archer chick... "Aro".

Pew pew pew!

:D

I won't get into the debate since I can see taking it from either direction, just thought I'd share my first impression.

Noting that this was the same playthrough I did this on, so there you go.

I actually think (and this is pure opinion, since the game writers obviously don't agree!) that Zevran's tent refusal after you accept the earring is a little weird.  If that is the sequence of events, what is it that causes him to suddenly think about what he wants and what the relationship means to him?  I'm not saying that this scenario can't make sense, but it seems somewhat less logical to me than the earring-refusal->tent-refusal chain of events.

(Since it came up a bit earlier -- I also agree that Zev's "thank you" dialogue coming after the earring conversation is weird!  I've actually switched the order in my writing, because I think the thank you leads in much more sensibly to the earring...)

Different question: What conclusions does Zevran draw when the Warden refuses the earring?

I don't think he completely thinks through what the earring actually means before he gives it.   The story about how he came by it sounds a little rehearsed almost, and perhaps so does the 'Don't get the wrong idea ..' line, but when he starts to say what it means to him, he stumbles.  He didn't expect to come out with that.

I think he does feel a warm feeling towards the warden: love, gratitude, adoration, and wanting to give his most treasured posession is instinctive.    He hasn't thought through what it means, apart from that he wants the warden to have it, and how to present it in a way which doesn't obligate the warden or come across as demanding.   Nobody has given him gifts before, and I imagine he may have never given one before.

Whether you accept it or refuse it he does say that it means a lot, and tries to tell you how he feels, ending up with 'I have no better way to say it'.  Giving the gift is the only way he knows to show how he feels.  (I don't think he's aiming to hide how he feels.  If he was, he wouldn't give the earring in the first place, or wouldn't say that it means a lot).

Refusing on the grounds that it means something must be frustrating.  He's just told you that it means something, and that he can't properly explain how he feels.  I agree with those who are saying he doesn't think the refusal means the end of the relationship.  But it does mean he's messed up the gift-giving - what would have been a sweet and caring experience.   It's not the way he imagined it going.

He doesn't conclude that the relationship is over or anything major like that.  But he doesn't seem to conclude anything positive either.

I figured if it was really an Issue with him, it'd come up again. By that point in the game I was reasonably confident in that much in his writing. Plus I believe when I checked his approval he was (Love) at that point, so I knew things weren't too bad.

I kind of felt bad, but I'd taken his "keep it, sell it, whatever you want" sort of like Ej that time, and then his frustration at my breaking script (at least in an IC sense) was pretty funny. I was feeling pretty obstinate, so it was like "Well, next time don't be so silly about it! You made me be way more direct about hauling you into the tent!"

If he'd shoved it at my Warden once more after the basically "I'll only take it if it means something" line, even without directly saying it meant something, I'd have taken it. Instead, he sort of armflailed. XD It was cute. I sort of wanted to ruffle his hair.

Again... not a good romantic, I. XD

Edit: Although I should point out I've roleplayed a romance with Sanzo, who armflails a lot worse than that, while sort of giving off secret little hearts. So I could be biased towards thinking that stuff isn't a huge crisis... especially with the love switchover. The Warden might be a very frustrating man/woman sometimes, quote unquote, but he clearly doesn't mind it too much as a general rule.

Maybe it's not the earring that leads to the tent refusal but something else (time to think afterwards, or the conversation about thanking you, etc.).

Or it could be that it is the earring, but in different ways.  Although he initially tries to offer it as a simple gift, without strings, he says more as the conversation goes on.   He does tell you that the earring means a lot, and tells you that he is using it to tell you something (I have no better way to say it).  By accepting it, you are accepting whatever it is he was trying to say.   That may be reason enough for him to go away and think about what he really does feel, and whether it's love.

Aro, the line about picking up treasure is kind of funny.  I can see that.   Especially as you pick up such a load of junk sometimes.

He really messes it up, doesn't he?   If he just gave the earring without trying to explain at all, then probably all wardens would accept it.   It's because he gets into the whole subject of what it means that he ends up being refused.    He's just so unusued to giving gifts.

Yeah, I didn't tell him "I won't take it unless it means something" because I thought that part was funny, I was just being obstinate at him like he'd done to me before (the first tent time). But the treasure line cracked me up good.

I observe Bann Teagan drooling everywhere regardless of primary fandom (now it's also in this thread, lol). *shrug*

Edit: ... and maybe some Zevran fanart linkage:

By the way, have you ever pondered possible connections to the Tristan and Isolde story, if there ever was one?

Tristan - to my memory - was a loyal underling of a ruler, who got a young wife overseas. I haven't paid too much attention to Arlessa Isolde's codex, especially after the bug which appears upon saving her and Conor.

Oh yes, they're making out in Lothering in the midst of corpses.
