I still haven't managed a playthrough with Zevran friendzoned, though I have made it really far before cracking! I guess I just like the casual getting deeper story more than the woo'ing and going after a very likely impossible dream story.

My HNM makes use of Zev (no, not sexually), because he's a skilled assassin and because he likes his general attitude toward life. And because they both like killing things, even if it is in different fashions. Describe the several stages of poisoning? Great! Teach me, or help me use it on Arl Howe when we get to Denerim!

LOL No, my Aedan is a sword-and-shield warrior. Hence why I said he's not as smart as HNF (cunning rogue) was. Not that he's dumb, but not as worldly-wise and perceptive as she was. I credit the Antivan sister-in-law for teaching HNF about "poison and kindness" alongside her usual Cousland slice n' dice training.Sabriana wrote...
So, let me guess, Addai. Your HNM is a.... rogue?

So up we go to Orzammar, to get further in Sten's quest, and because of the 'Rose's Thorn". Zevran just keeps staring at her. All the time. He gives Alistair 'advice' (Alistair 100 love, Zevran 81 adore), staring pointedly at my PC. He never breaks the stare at her. Boy, that conversation takes on a whole other aspect when the two are like this. Ouch.
She resists. She wants nothing to do with this. She's got enough on her plate, thank you very much. And what does Zevran do? He runs right into the mouse-click directing her to go toward Dust Town. Does his little "we've had our flirts" thing, and the next thing I know, my PC is cracking from the bottom up. She can't say 'no' to Zevran. She tries, but no go (really, I hovered over the options for at least 15 minutes).
Gah! She goes on my nerves sometimes.
I still like her a lot though. I mean, my kids go on my nerves quite often, and I still love them with all my heart.

True, Skadi. I still can't see why people mistrust Zevran, who actually grows, is the only one concerned about the PC, and gives her advice that she may or may not take, and fall all over Leliana. She comes off as a 'sweet and dedicated to the good cause", and the more you get to know her, the creepier she gets.
I swear, I have nothing against her, but she really, really freaked me (and my PC) out when she described her past as a bard with all the torture, hunting, seducing and murdering, and was so happy and joyful about it. Made my PC back up real slow, and re-think the whole of Leliana.
I do not think that Leliana would have broken with her past, had she not been betrayed by Majorlaine. On the contrary, she'd still be out there happily hunting, seducing, torturing, and killing men.
Total agreement there. People call Zevran a slimebag assassin, yet as you get to know him, it becomes apparant that for all his bravado, he does have some pretty strong feelings and a morality that contradicts him being a cold blooded dirtbag. Leliana does end up creeping me out the more you get to know her. Hell, she creeped out my noble with her talk of the Maker telling her to come along, which is why she initially rejected her in the Lothering tavern. She only got creepier as time went on. But like the last poster stated, that dangerous woman/femme fatale thing appeals to alot of guys. Coupled with the fact she is bisexual, and has that French accent, plus her sugar overdose of sweet girlieness on the surface.
But of course, like Addai just said, no one ever said men were particularly bright creatures...

"Femme fatale"? I thought Morrigan was that. No, I'm not snarking you, I don't play males, and never had Morrigan romances.
And agreed, Zevran is a menace as a DW rogue. He deals out major damage, and almost never falls. Of course, like with all comps, you have to give him the tools to do that.
@ Addai
That's one I haven't tried yet. I started my beloved amazon out on it, but respec'd her. Why? Hmm..., let me think. Oh yeah, it was because somebody told me that a DW warrior is amazing.
Have you played a S&S warrior before? How do they work out? I do believe Zevran would like to snuggle up to a warrior who knocks people on their butts with a big, bad shield.

No, my 1st S&S character. It's mostly boring. Like you point out, the only thing that makes it worthwhile is that shield bash. Sooo sexy! LOL I always used to think that about Alistair, too, with my characters who romanced him. There is charm playing a male character because you get to be gallant. Turning that shield bash on someone who's attacking Wynne or Morrigan has that "I'm here to save the day" feel to it. My PC has the cocky voice and I believe one of his lines is even to say that!Sabriana wrote...

Male PCs also have a lot more opportunity to flirt with NPCs. I mean, c'mon? Kissing Kaitlyn and Bella in Redcliffe, whereas females only get to bandy words with Teagan? No fair!!! The Morrigan romance is also really interesting.
Glad you enjoy DW. I'd feel bad if you re-spec'ed and found I was full of crap.

Oh? Really? You can kiss Bella and Kaitlyn as a male? And a woman can't have Teagan grab her and plant a big one on her before going off with Isolde? Heck, a female PC can't even pass the 'Dwyn' persuade check?
Nice. Ah, equality. My favorite science fiction.

Actually, her girliness was a huge turnoff for me from the outset. Yech. (We don't have a barf emoticon... hmm
(Although, for some reason, I've never been able to trigger the random encounter with assassins for her personal quest.. even after getting her to talk about Marjolaine. Hmm...)

I leave the shield bashing to Alistair. Like Addai said, he makes it look hot, and does an excellent job. The sword and shield set up is not for dealing damage, but for taking it in massive amounts and remaining standing, hence why it's the tank set up. Playing it is not nearly as much fun as other set ups. A DW warrior gets the advantage of being even more lethal, since you usually end up with enough strength to dual wield longswords.
And again, sabriana, you're right about the double standards between Zevran and leliana. It's an adolscent male thing: bi chicks, even if they are manipulative killers who enjoy toying with and using people...that's ok, cuz lezbians r HAWT!. Bi elf males who are brutally honest in their personal views and intentions: "ewww, he's a slimy gay murderer, he has to die." Without even bothering to learn anything. Because of course, everyone knows that talking to gay or bi people like they are people will make you gay, too.

@Skaldi: Hey, why do you always go on about how stupid us we men are? We aren't stupid... are we? [/endalistair]
On another note, I'd always have thought Zev would've preferred men who could wield their massive swords well, and women who have the finesse to wield two swords at once.

Actually, I ADORE my S/S HNF. It is so much fun to shield bash people, and since I put her down the precision striking tree, she can do a great deal of damage - more than Alistair for sure. She's terrific for stunning/knocking down enemies to let the others take them down, and is just all around a blast to play. I like it just as much, if not maybe a tad bit more, than dual wield, which I never thought I'd say.
I have a second S/S, a Commoner dwarf, and she's actually hard to play with. I don't know what the difference is. Seems like the playability might depend on your build - I find Amelia more fun to play than Alistair, and they have the exact same moves except that Alistair doesn't have precision striking. *shrugs*

Oh yes, I agree. I love watching Alistair bashing enemies around with his shield. My HNF rogue is especially grateful (as is Zevran) to him because he bashed those stupid werewolves off her. What the hey is it with this 'overwhelm" thing anyway.

I mean, both Caiytlyn and Bella kiss you because you're the hero who saved the village, if you're a male. Well, Teagan think's you're his hero too! So why should the lady hero not get that little extra bit of "appreciation" from Bann Sexy? I mean, she saved the village, and depending, saved his borther as well as his brother's family...if that doesn't merit a little celebratory suck-face, I don't know what does!
I mean, he even says he believes the Maker himself sent you to him! Damnit! And the look in those big bedroom blue eyes when he says it...common, Bioware! He was gagging for it!
Grrrrrr......

As a guy, I feel bad about kissing Kaitlyn, simply because, well, her little brother's right there, and she's all hesitant. Bella, on the other hand, you ask her for a kiss and the scene's like "wowza, THATS a hero's welcome!" And you can kiss her twice.
Twice?? Wow, will have to try that. XD My mage is exactly the type who would, anyway. Just have to switch Morrigan out of the party first.
@Sabriana, oh, duh!! Thanks. XD I actually thought of that.. at some point yesterday? And completely forgot about it. Now I'll remember for sure.

Don't get me started on not being able to kiss Teagan, or pinch his gloriously awesome buttocks. Hell, you don't really get to flirt with or kiss any males in game, except that genetic tragedy known as Cammen
I felt a little stalker-ish having my male PC kiss Kaitlyn. She does hesitate, but afterwards she gives this little sigh. Oh yes, she loved that. She was just being shy. And Bevin covering his eyes was hilarious. HNM had left Morrigan back at camp, he's not that dumb. LOL As it is she gives him the cold shoulder at the tent. What's up with that?! Leli might get a roll in the hay, at least, out of him, if M. continues that.
Sorry to derail from Zevran. Did I say recently how awesome Zevran is? Zevran is awesome. I feel I have been doing my part in other threads to make this point, though! Sad how often you have to convince people that Zevran is awesome. I mean... obvious?

Except for Vaughn of course. And that idiot that always sides with Loghain nomatter what at the Landsmeet.
@Jeno: Yes. You can get the second kiss two ways, one, by telling her that she's pretty enough for you to help her get out of Redcliffe (and following through with it after the battle), and two, by intimidating Loyd into making you the owner of the Tavern, and then giving the Tavern to Bella after the battle.
Back on topic. It is a shame that there does exist a double standard and people don't tend to give Zev as big a chance as Leliana. I'm not gay or bi, but I do give Zev a chance. Just keep your eyes fastened on something else then my Starfang when we're talkin' buddy.
