Alistair: So those... designs you have all over your back...
Zevran: They're called tattoos. And I have them in many more places than just on my back, my friend.
Alistair: Err... right. I hear that someone gets those by having needles put the ink under your skin?
Zevran: A great many needles, amongst other things. Yes, that would be true.
Alistair: Didn't that hurt?
Zevran: Ohhh, yes, yes. But it is not so bad, in truth. If you like, I could give you one. I learned a bit of the art myself in Antiva.
Alistair: Oh, no. No, I don't think so.
Zevran: Come, it will just be a small one. Perhaps the symbol of the Grey Wardens? Something manly! Where are my needles?
Alistair: Um... maybe some other time. I'm... I'm going to go stand over here, now.

Edit: And second conversation:

Alistair: I've been thinking about those ink drawings, what did you call them? Tattoos? Are you... still willing to do one?
Zevran: Oh-ho! You've decided to take the plunge, have you? What is a little pain, am I right?
Alistair: I'm not worried about that. I think they look interesting, though I'd want mine... smaller. When can you do it?
Zevran: Not so fast, my friend. There is an entire ritual to how this is done, do you not know? First I need to bathe you in a mixture of olives and rosewater.
Alistair: You need to... bathe me? That seems... odd.
Zevran: No, no, no, not at all. It needs to be worked into your skin, preparing it to receive the ink. The massage is quite pleasurable, do not worry. You are in good hands.
Alistair: The... massage? You're... having me on, aren't you?
Zevran: I might be. I might not be. Shall I describe the rest of the ritual to you?
Alistair: Hmm. No. No, on second thought I'll just pass.
Zevran: <desc>Laughs</desc> Excellent choice!

That's only the first part! XD I'm tossing the audio files into a vid and rendering. Already at 5%. Zevran's delightfully evil laugh at the end of the whole thing has to be heard properly anyway. ;)

On the topic of magical/ instant healing in FF. I try to keep it to a minimum - even a magicaly healed injury is likely to leave some scar tissue and require some recovery time. Also it should be difficult, if not impossible, for a healer to repair more than one life threatening wound at a time. Healing potions/poultices should also not be able to fix everything. In my DA world broken bones don't line themselves up, infected wounds can't be cured with magic and there is a cost to both the healer (exhaustion) and the healee (the tissue regenerated has to come from their own resources, it doesn't just magically appear).

I guess, coming from a medical background, I want some realism to injuries - I still have poor Zev trying to regain his flexibility in one shoulder after an infected wound (I also snuck a little penicillin- bread mold) into the DA universe to deal with the infection.

50%! It's in the game data, there's a few banters that were taken out of triggering for some reason. I love the tattoo ones though. That laugh at the end is just epic all by itself.

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm going with. It's also basically the same system I used for Amberdrake's Healing Gift in the multiverse game I played him on for a few years.

Edit: I think if you're going to gravely injure a character, it should have more impact than walking it off. XD

I really need to read your fic if my brain ever de-fogs. Everyone's in this thread, really.

I think it's a good system.  I have been trying to come up with realistic limitations to magical healing since I first read Katherine Kurtz's "Deryni" books in the '80s.  She does a pretty good job with magic overall in her books, but deals with healing as a sort of divine gift.  I love that she has a genetic basis for inheritance of magical talent.

Yeah, I have been gradually working through all the fics in this thread.  There is so much talent here.  My fic starts out a little angsty for my taste so apologies in advance - it takes a while for Aithne to pull her head out of her *** and see the forest for the trees.  Image IPB

How often do characters need to get injured, anyway? Writing about recovery sounds like a pain...

I've had the first one but not the second bit of banter. Whether thats because its not triggering or I just havent heard it yet, I don't know.

This forum is playing up for me today. It took 10 minutes to update my edit and loading up this screen to post has taken over 10 minutes. Weird!

I actually spliced this all together on a whim the other night and just didn't render/upload it. It took longer than you'd think! lol Anyway, it's probably my favorite banter in the game. So, here you go:

Tattoo banter!

It's still processing as of this post. If it looks like it's just not going to work, I'll upload it to AWN.

Edit: It ate my link? o.O I added it in text in case it does it again.

I try not to get my characters badly hurt too often - they are supposed to be well trained fighters, after all.   My two main characters have only been injured severely enough to cause them problems once in 40,000+ words, and that was because my Warden was playing the hero and led them into overwhelming odds.  I know there will be at least one other scenario requiring some recovery later on in my fic, but too much time spent dwelling on injury can be boring too.

And Sarah, I apologize, I really need to read your fic, I just need to play through the dwarf noble origin first - I have the character made, as you can see by the avatar, I just haven't played her yet.  Hangs head. Image IPB

I wrote that Missa needed a day and a half of rest to recover from infected wounds, but had Morrigan!magic and Morrigan!herbs to help speed it up. Leliana took two arrows to the chest that she needed two days to recover from, but had Morrigan!magic/herbs again to help the process along.

Thus far, my character's only needed recovery time once and that was after the darkspawn overwhelmed them at the Tower but then again, they just got to Lothering, so...
She managed not to get injured at all during the 'go find Duncan' part, but that's because if she did then she might actually have to put on the sweaty, bloody dead people armor and that's just really not something she was prepared to do at that point in time. Image IPB

I can't really see her getting seriously injured in Lothering because, well, Lothering and she has a resistance to magic so the Circle's out, too...Haven does have a dragon she'll probably end up recklessly insisting on fighting so there's always that, I guess.

Alley needed an extra few weeks despite having two healers on hand, but that was because she was a retard and went and re-broke herself. (She is always, always, a terrible patient.) So. XDD

I'm sure I'll end up mangling Zevran at some point as well, but I'm waiting a while before I pull that card out of my hat again, haha. He'll probably end up doing something reckless on her behalf, which will ****** her off. So in after all the OSHI OSHI D: D: D: D: she can be surly at him once he's stable. (That's not a spoiler, I wouldn't kill Zev off. Probably.)

Now, her hands and throat and whatever else got mangled before she was traveling with mages? They're permanently screwed up. She'll never go back to sculpting clay the way she used to, never learn herbalism or poisons, except perhaps the first rank of the latter just to be able to safely apply the stuff, and verbal communication is always going to be a literal pain. :D The fact that she speaks so much to Zev is really quite telling.

If you're playing as a magic-resistant dwarf does that mean healing is less effecive, too? It seems like it would but that would really suck.
