It doesn't matter if they really literally stood by watching. It is a fact that when the Blight came they did nothing to help despite pleas for assistance (or else they wouldn't have been considered neutral and unhelpful) and given the damage the Blight did and the years it took to put them down I can't say the Dalish were innocent victims in the loss of their homeland although, of course, the humans went way overboard.SurrealSadi wrote...
It was alleged that they just watched. That means there was no proof. As for the issues between Orlais and the Dales, it's likely the Chantry incited a lot of it. The Chantry obviously has issues with other races worshiping something or someone other than the Maker and his Bride.
Edit: And before I start getting another headache, I'm going to go lie down and try to get some more sleep.
You need to remember that the history is only alleged to have happened the way its portrayed. Just like the codex entries - this is what is believed to have happened (but may not have). The full story behind Dragon Age will not be known until the entire DA story is told. Most of what is known in Origins comes from the Chantry. Even Leiliana doesn't believe everything the Chantry says.

Edited because this is silly to argue about. I think I'll just agree to disagree.
I loved what you said, but agree that debating it is pointless. People get out of the game whatever they want to, and make assumptions based on their own life experiences.
This is what we need:

One final thing: you're saying that you think the Dales might have helped in the Blight after all? That sounds like a pretty big revision and the Dales not helping couldn't be used as the Chantry's excuse to go after them within the lifetimes of the people who lived through the Second Blight as they'd actually remember what happened. Besides, the fact that the invasion was so close to the end of the Second Blight implies that the Chantry was able to use the Dales' lack of help (for whatever reason) to spur on an exalted march. If, say, the Chantry tried to declare an exalted march on the new Dalish homeland at Ostagar within the next thirty years or so they'd probably have a harder time if only because people know that they played a part in stopping the Blight. You need to remember that the history is only alleged to have happened the way its portrayed. Just like the codex entries - this is what is believed to have happened (but may not have). The full story behind Dragon Age will not be known until the entire DA story is told. And so was the fall of the Dales. You can't say that the humans should get over the Dales' refusal to help if the Dalish won't get over the sacking of their homeland during the same time period although they can, of course, still feel free to be bitter about their status as second-class citizens. And really...the SECOND blight?!?!?! That was thousands of years ago.

This strikes a nerve with me, and I know why, so I am going to drop out of this.
I spent a rather large chunk of my childhood on my grandfathers "farm" on a reservation. He was a tribal elder. Much about the Dalish reminds me of that, both good and bad. People on the reservation are extraordinarily leery of outsiders, even those from other tribes. This is often to their detriment, but the caution comes from bitter experience.
There is something very personal about having your culture forcibly ripped from you, being enslaved, and then being treated worse than livestock. The humans rebuilt. The elves have never been allowed to.

yep i have avoided saying the same thing for a while now. the comparison is pretty obvious, even to the city elves (as many indians were forced/lied to/coerced into relocating to work ghettos in the cities during the 40s-60s too)

I didn't mean to offend you and I don't think the Dalish treatment was at all acceptable just that in this particular case they were not completely innocent either and that their bitterness contributes towards their horrible relations with others, though even if they did try to be more welcoming their would likely still be problems as evidenced by the tale of the DE father.sami jo wrote...

I'm not offended, I just realized why I was getting so worked up about it. There are some striking parallels with the Jewish side of my family as well in the Dalish origin.
