Is there any point in wondering how these people got tattoos? I mean, I doubt they had needles in all these settings and the brand sounds like it was, well, branded on but what about the other kinds? Like the ones the Dalish have?

Eh, why wouldn't they have something needle-like enough to use in all the settings? My boggle has always been how a city elf gets huge facial tats when none of the other alienage elves seem to have them. I'd think it would make you a huge target for the local shem. (Didn't stop me from using tats on my archer, mind you.)

Edit: You're kidding, I got pagetop again? Fine, I'll be even cheaper than on the last page!

Repost is repost repost, is repost repost repost! B)B)

And the one Kaioku of them did before she cruely left us all alone! Well, with each other. But still.

Quadruple the elves, quadruple the fun? I dunno. I'll be under Charsen's couch in my bunker. *shifty eyes* Typing things that will be far less exciting than one would hope for, I'm sure.

Needles did exist back then. But they were not as sharp and thin as they are now. Undoubtedly getting a tattoo was a painful process. The dalish use it as a "rite of passage".... I hate to say the quote and not be 100% accurate, but if I recall it loosely enough, the blood writing is started and if the Dale cannot maintain their composure, they're considered not yet grown. Only once their tattoo is finish with the pain mastered (I think it's symbolicly related to their theory of not submitting, as is their oath against humans) are they respected more than children. After that your test for your role (hunter, crafter... ie SquirrelCheeks and SorryMasterArathorn) seals the deal and you can wed and have children.
That's my impression of the system, anyways.

Off to bed, quoted so it's on the top of the page so I can read where this topic went when I wake up tomorrow.

Ow, that makes me even less likely to ever get facial tattoos on my characters...I mean it would hurt enough if it were done NOW but back then? So not worth it. Plus I can't stand the way it looks.

Oh, I don't know. I like how some of the tattoos look. I like to think of them as a way for my Wardens to say, If I can withstand the pain of this, I can do anything.

Yeah, I remember that bit of Dalish infos too, when you look at the dye next to the one guy in the camp whose wife turned into a werewolf. Blood writing or something it's called. Ah -- found it!

I don't think it would be physically possible to maintain your composure/not scream out during a blood-writing. Tribes IRL that have such pratices allowed the person to chew on something, wring something in their hands and weep/scream out if need be; allowed those of a similiar age group to watch and console the individual undergoing the act.

The bloodwriting always seemed oddly solitary for such a group-minded people.

I think Scarification would've made more sense for the Dalish than tatoos.

Popping in while I satisfy my mid-sleep-cycle munchies.

Bone needles and needles from softer metals, absolutely--the Egyptians had bronze needles for tattooing, and pigment-stained bone needles are surprisingly common artifacts from some cultures.  They wouldn't be as fine, but they'd be able to do the work, fairly intricate in the hands of a skilled artist.  There are other ways to do tattooing as well--very fine cuts and rubbing in the pigment, for example.  How do you think pacific islanders and other indigenous peoples can have long traditions of heavy tattooing?  The word even originates (supposedly) from a bastardization of a Samoan word, when it was re-integrated into European society by sailors.  Wiki explains better than I can--history isn't my forte.

Charsen couldn't find it when he first made the list and I'm far to lazy to look. :D

Missa's bad ass. She dozes off through most of her tattoos. (Based that on my cousin, who is covered in tats and always falls asleep on the chair; he says it's something about the noise and the repetition, and he goes out like a light.)

But not her facial one though, she actually cried at that, even covers the eyecrease and the eyebrow. That had to hurt. SHE WAS CRYING TEARS OF BLOOD OKAY. THAT'S THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE TIME FOR MISSA TO CRY.

My Dalish got stoned before his blood writing. The Dalish have something to numb pain, I'm sure. My Aeducan thinks tattoos are hideously vulgar, what. Stone no. She's a Lady, don't you know.

I don't have any tattoos but I do have a comment. It is amazing the amount of pain a person can endure if they have their mind set. I am a large animal veterinarian and there is a lot of opportunity to get badly hurt, it is not infrequent for my partner, my techs, or myself to get kicked, smashed, cut, stomped on, run over and/or poked with needles. Generally, unless a trip to the ER is needed we get up and go back to work. We have all sewed up our own lacerations from time to time - hurts and is awkward but doable. So I don't think that it is unlikely that the Dalish or the dwarves would be unable to sit through a tattoo- even with less than sharp needles, particularly if they had a distraction. Not saying they wouldn't use a few expletives or flinch from time to time, but I think overall they would endure it stoically.

The initial castless brand given to babies would be something different - I'm sure it is a tattoo, a true brand wouldn't make sense and would be horribly disfiguring in that age child. Anyway, I think it would be difficult to do the tattoo in an infant because the child would react strongly to the pain, unless they had something to numb it.

All of us on dwarfthread can't work out the brand thing, and most of us know the specific lore from toolset/codexes pretty well. I rather like the idea of a creepy coming of age tattoo like a bar/bat mitzvah, but that makes no sense as how would you tell if a child pre ceremony is branded?

There's namedays instead of birthdays with dwarves, which fits into the tradition of family more, especially if it's, say, a mother of a lower caste brought into a house. So branding between birth and nameday would have to have some leeway, really, until the child's fate is decided.

Maybe the brands are painted on until the child is old enough to wear a permanent one?

Perhaps they just put a few dots of ink on at that time and finish the tattoo later?  A tattoo placed on a child that young would distort as the child grew anyway.

I blame dwarven ale, and Zevran. Specifically, Zevran's unwilingness to point out it's a stupid idea. It's all fun and games until you wake up one late afternoon still spitting dirt and looking like this:

Yes it's a beautiful comic. Also, I think she draws all the characters the best of anyone I've seen.

Hmm, I'm bored so I think I'll post two of my favourite songs here.

Passage by Vienna Teng (Ramante () told me about this song. )
