What's the (Romantic) Appeal of Zevran?

I love love LOVE how Zevran, at the beginning, when finding out what you see as the future of you two, says he won't want to leave if he grows fond of the warden, then at the post-coronation says that he's grown fond of her. Talk about completing the circle in a most satisfying way.

Ok, squee break done. I'll leave everyone to their conversation which this had NO part of.

Hmmm, as another note, I found psychotic city elf very fun to play. She was not nearly as psycho as Cuddlezarro's, but had her moments. Getting Alistair down to 100 hostile is still one of my major Alistair squee moments.

Edit: Geez, and one of my most worthless posts WOULD end up at the top of a new page.

Second edit: This mage JUST spoke with Zevran about the Dalish.  Even though Alistair is at 100 love, there's just no way it's going to last much longer.  Zevran completely doesn't feel sorry for himself even when talking about something so horrible, and his reaction to just some kind words shows how he actually is beginning to trust her.  Gah, that story still breaks my heart.

At the top of the page, so another edit:  Zevran DOES lie when he says the torture, slavery, and festering wounds never happened to him.  He was, at the very least, a slave . . .

One of my favorite lines is when the PC learns that Zev was tortured and Zev's response is that the PC should not dwell on his scars because he doesn't.  Every one of my characters melts at that.

Only one of my characters has ended up with anyone but Zev, and Neria (elf mage number 1) is taking comfort in her best friend Zev now that Allistair dumped her like a hot potato.  My first character did get Morrigan and Lel to fall in love with him (and enjoyed their sniping) before dumping them for Zev.  He was kissed Zev before they even left the meadow where Zev ambushed him.  Morrigan grumbling about being tossed aside for a man is pretty funny.

I'm turning into a RL Lelianna where Zev is concerned. :P

Oh god, you ladies convinced me. I am definately romancing Zev on my new FemElfMage2. Now I gotta go and peruse the Alistair thread on the points of keeping him from falling in love with her.

Okay, I STILL can't get my own screenshots to work, but I found this suto-screenshot in my directory. Only one that the auto-shot has ever taken upclose of Zevran. Usually the up lcose ones are only ever of NPC or Alistair.

This was during the after Talsien encounter conversation.

YES. That single inconsistency convinced me he was lying the first time I heard him make that "Oh, none of that happened to ME" comment. :(

Agreed, and heartily. ;D  But at least she can acknowledge his good points. ;D

Ahh, it's okay with Alistair, he doesn't mind that much when you break up with him, apparently. ;D
But if you're going the Zevran route, be prepared to squee!

LOL I gathered so from this massive thread. Urgh I gotta finish Lothering tonight, and do Broken Circle, pick up Zev, then go and pick up Shale. It's going to be a long night.

It's very easy to keep Alistair from falling in love.  Don't tell him he's handsome, and don't tell him he's special to you.  Be nice, and when he flirts, be nice, but don't flirt back.  You can have EVERY conversation with him (aside from the "handsome" one which is there to turn on the romance).

If you need tips on how to end up with the most SPOKEN commitment from Zevran, never hesitate to ask here!  And try to keep in mind, there's a lot more going on under the surface than he shows if you just are a murder cheerleader OR rude to him.  Choose answers between those extremes, and you get a better understanding of him (if not the highest approval).  Be careful with gifts, because there is one advantage to not having his approval skyrocket to 71 TOO quickly (a more natural flow to the conversations).

Yay, I'm so happy someone else is going to try this!  There's a reason even my HNF end up in love with Zevran while married to their political ally, Alistair . . .

When I've broken up with him after he fell in love, I literally felt like human garbage.  And reloaded.  Gah is all I can say.  What amazing voice acting.  And he is SO sweet about it anyway.  Hurt, yes, betrayed, definitely, obviously in love, no doubt, and somewhat expecting it as well.  And whether he goes or stays, how he makes it so clear that he loves the warden.  Gah, Alistair at his best never shows t hat much love (sorry!).

Oh definately no worries, and I plan on making specific saves before I have conversations with him so I don't miss anything. And thanks for the tips about the gifts, I usually toss them to their intended once I get them.

I will not hesitate to ask here for advice either, I swear Bioware has the most knowledgable and considerate community I have seen, and I come from a MMORPG.

On a note, I am also using the Dragon Age: Redesigned Mod, so I get a brunette Zevran >.>

I usually don't go that way in the conversation as I like him asking for a kiss, but since it got brought up, I wanted to hear it again.  And yes, the way he says it, and with there being at least one obvious lie in it, coupled with the fade . . . ugh.  No wonder he took so much pride in not only surviving, but excelling.

Well, in a joking way, and you don't get to actually kiss him or anything there.  But yes, he does ask for one!

The "Oh! Now the anticipation is killing me" cracks me every time. XD  It'd be awesome if he came back to that at the end, though, if you chose that option at the beginning... ;)

Him not coming back at the end for payment is the single most (or is that only) disappointing part of the Zevran romance!  *grin*

Edit: It is seriously funny though.  You'd think if anything was a romance line, that would be it!  Hah, I still like:

Warden: You're a cad, do you know that?
Zevran: Is that Ferelden for virile and sexy?  If so, I like it!

So I'm rereading an old series of mine, and one of my all-time favorite characters has made his appearance.  And it struck me that Kazandar is oddly familiar now.  A snippet.

"Gentle Goddess, Mother of Dragons," Kazander whispered as he turned to wtach the girl vanish through the main doors.

"I see the Lady Chayla has supplanted my wife in your affections," Walvis muttered.

"The Lady Chayla would blind a sighted man and cause the sightless to see!  Who is she?  Who is her father?  When may I bet him for her hand?"

"You don't change, do you?  Even at sixteen years old you tried to seduce every woman within a hundred measures!  Don't waste your time with this one, my friend.  She's the daughter of the Lord Maarken, the granddaughter of Lord Chaynal, and the great-granddaughter of Prince Zehava.  Not to mention the niece of the Lord of Goddess Keep and the grand-niece of the High Prince himself."

Kazander's face grew longer with each addition to the list of Chayla's exalted kin.  "I obey, mighty athri.  I will not touch.  I would not dare!  But you wouldn't be so cruel as to forbid me to look, would you?"

lol I can totally hear all of that in Zev's accent now.  This is take from Stronghold by Melanie Rawn, if anyone is interested.  Kazander is a fantastic character.

Oh, yes.  I'd say (forgive me all) even do the gauntlet first so you can do the broken circle with Zevran if it's your first run through with him.  If you're romancing him, you find out all about what the gauntlet reveals quite early anyway.  Redcliff is a good starter one as well if you don't mind sacrificing Isolde or Conner.

Good things about Zevran in the various zones:

Orzammar -- to get an understanding of his ability to size up situations and also his willingness to shoulder some of the leadership
Circle -- because you will learn more about him than you could imagine, and realize a lot of what you think you know about him just isn't what it seems
Gauntlet -- more important if he's in the friendzone than romanced I think.  He does have some fantastic things to say in Haven, however.
Redcliff -- you can see his absolute protectiveness of the warden for the first time, plus in certain circumstances he'll help you intimidate someone who needs it.  Plus you also see there his ability to look at a situation and size it up accurately.
Dalish -- he has surprisingly little to say here, though it does open up a good dialog with him.  However, if you do this first, before you pick him up, you still get the dialog.  But you also may see some of the most surprising compassion from him.  And you can also see his incredibly mean sense of humor.

I hate that I have to miss one of the zones wtih him.  I trade off between the dalish and redcliff.  Occasionally I'll do the gauntlet first.  However, I never do either Orzammar or the circle without him.

I hadn't known that he insists on finishing him.

He doesn't in-game, he does in my fic.  I think it's more in character, but hard to put in game unless it comes down to a coup de grace, which is kind of cruel (since the fact that someone needs to deliver it at all means whoever wounded him that badly screwed it up).

Creature, it does make a lot of sense. He is very insistent that his targets 'deserve a clean kill' in the Leliana banter.

That does make sence.  Yeah, I see what you mean.  I think it would have been great if they put it in there... maybe have a cutscene trigered or something....

Ah, so now I have a reason to drag the obnoxious nut-job around for awhile.  Anything for more Zevran banter, especialy insightful.

I always imagined, even at the begining when he was talking about the thrill of the hunt, that he would be the type to end his victims as quickly and painlessly as possible.  Zevran the mercyful killer.  Kind of like that  nickname LeStat gives Louis in 'Interview With the Vampire'..."the Mercyful Death"... Except I hate interview and Louis and I just think it's far truer of Zevran.  lol

It's nice to know that he confirms that theory.  I wonder if that's what captured Rinna's heart?  I know it would, mine.

I remember how uncomfortable he was when I asked him if he's ever killed an inocent.  He didn't even try to make light of that.  Tried to be very cold and matter of fact about it, but there was plenty of emotion getting through.

I realy wished I could ask him about his 'job' without calling it 'adventures' or whatever the dialogue was.  That was sooo out of character for Dristen... but I had to in order to get the dialogue, and once it gets going, his dialogue trees are so much more in depth than some of the others.  It's so very personal, unless you're playing a character who's a complete ass.  And his storries are so difficult to judge at first... He realy does make himself sound downright vile, but then backpedals, and leaves you wondering what the truth is.  But I think it becomes obvious once he learns to trust you.  It realy is so intence, I can see why some people mistakingly are put off and assume the worst.

Oh, I used f5 f9 quite a lot during all his murder and mayhem storries, and noticed that Zevran actually DOESN''T prefer a 'murder chearleader', anyhow... you'll be surprised... he expects, even wants you to confront him on certain paoints, which will open up a little more dialogue and maybe get you extra points.  I didn't write them down... too busy squeeing over what this means about him.  LOL  But yeah... He's nasty at first to provoke you and see how you react, so he can then judge YOU in return, I think.  He's no 'murder chearleader' himself, after all.  Though he also doesn't want to be simply told over and over that he's horrible, ether... but if something he sais realy sounds horrible, it's truly best to be honest because he is surprisingly reasonable and willing to converse more deaply.

I made the mistake of rocketing his aprooval up.  But I think it fit for Dristen.  Dristen was realy fealing very desperate for someone to love, and Morrigan is not looking promising at that point, though he still cared deaply for her.  I mean, really, you notice how the elves talk about 'the bonding' and everything.  Dristen didn't SEEM to have any obvious love interests amongst his clan before he was taken away.  Yet he's not some teen like the two you meet in the Brecelian Forest who are having their silly teen drama.  I think my Dalish is in his early 20's.  I like to think he's probably fooled around, but hasn't gone all the way untill he became enchanted by this strange and exotic fellow outsider, Morrigan, only to find out that romancing her is not all it's cracked up to be.  So when he does fall for Zev he falls hard and fast.  XD  Not to mention, as soon as I got Zev, the two of them made such a perfect pair on the battlefield it was uncanny.  I just wanted to grab him and make out amongst the carnage, as awful as that sounds.  XD

And I will so be getting that mod so I can do exactly that!  I mean really, what were the devs thinking?  Zev's the one who INSISTED we not be descreet about our first time sharing a tent.  I know damn well he wanted everyone in camp to see our little pre-game show there by the fire side.  Seriously.  XD  It was hilariously apropriate because when he leaned in and grabed Dristens jaw gently but realy... assertively like that, and said that line in that sexy voice about being awful with figures, still pretending he hadn't been playing coy... Ugh!!!  XD  Dristen was leaning back slightly and looking so 0_0  And then he kissed Dristen and there was noooo resistance afte that.  XD  SO CUTE.  It was so perfect.

Thank you so much for the advice! I have seen various party encounters with the Guardian in the Gauntlet (youtube spoilers, I know, I need to stop), so I know what is said to him and what he answers to in turn. I honestly was surprised when I learned of that. But now I can experience it for myself. And I will be taking him with me definately to the Brecilian forest, just for that bit of dialogue with the hermits stump.:innocent:

I think it's the kiss after, "So does this coy thing work for you often?"

Heh, I found myself idly hitting F1 F2 F1 F2 until I heard "Si, Amora," then I went back to running them around.  I think I actually do that WAY too often.  It's the best reason for having him at 100 adore early
