Never thought about Zevran/Rinna in quite this manner before, but this observation is spot-on. It does go directly back to Zev's "everything I thought I desired". The thought is telling, there.

Oooooh, that's an amazing prize!  The best I can do right now is a naked dwarf kissing a fully dressed Antivan so I think I'm not passing out the prizes today.

Perhaps I said it badly, but it does seem that Alistair is more in love with the idea of being in love than actually loving the Warden. I was in his position years ago and what Nilfalasiel said was completely true for me. I eventually came around, realized what an idiot I was being, and saw the guy in question for the jerk he was (as opposed to this idea I had in my head).

I don't doubt that Alistair thinks he loves the Warden, as I thought I loved that person. You can think of sparing Loghain as the trigger point for Alistair; the point where he realizes that the Warden isn't who he thinks she is. Notice that if you don't spare Loghain and don't make Alistair king, he continues to follow her around like a lost puppy. I really like that Zevran will speak up if he doesn't agree with what you're doing. The relationship with Zevran seems more like a partnership between equals. With Alistair, I almost feel like I'm his mother.

Edit 2: I'm not trying to say this is the only way to interpret it, of course, but this is how I see it.  I respect that your interpretation might be different.

The ugly dwarf is a borrowed dwarf, btw. Mine are all beautiful. But female. So someone kindly lent me one, and all I do is insult him I'm horrible!

Klarabella <3 you much so let me try to explain (gah, internet is FLAKY right now). 

Zevran will try to talk you out of things he disapproves of. He doesn't desert you, but he gives his opinion while you can still change your mind.  Alistair lets you have it after it's too late to do anything about it.  The exception being the landsmeet, but he does ditch you if you trust Riorden, who actually is the senior warden there.

The conditions of Zevran staying with the warden are set by Zevran, not by any outside influence. He's in love and wants a commitment, and he can't be with a warden who doesn't love him back or who doesn't want the commitment. He's not going to break up with you after he falls in love unless you tell him no.
