* Alistair: So I'm wondering something... what exactly does a woman see in a man like Zevran?
* Leliana: Oh, he's handsome enough for some. Why do you ask?
* Alistair: No reason. It's just... doesn't he seem to be a bit too much? The hair, the clothing...
* Leliana: I don't understand. A bit too much what? Do you have a problem with him?
* Alistair: Beyond the fact that he's an assassin who's tried to kill us more than once. No... no, not really. Do women go for that sort of thing?
* Leliana: Where I come from they do, oh yes.
* Alistair: Huh. Really? I see.

Don't you get the feeling from the way that whole romance plays out that Zevran knows from the start just how fantastic the PC is? He certainly spends a lot of time trying to portray himself in a horrible light as well, making sure she knows what it is she would be getting herself into. Opposed to Ali, who I don't think ever saw the PC as who she really was, and never realized what he was letting go.
I think Zev was trying to lay his cards out on the table - sort of "here...this is what you are getting into" and perhaps seeing if the PC DID care for him as much as he did for her? Or trying to unconsciously drive her away, because the only thing he ever loved (Rinna) he destroyed?
*sighs* on an aside - you *must* take Zev and Shale to Orzammar. Cutest dialogues ever! Zev just had a whole convo with Shale about her lack of a 'partner" and the things that "squishies" can do, that Shale cannot (like make love, be in love) He then initiated another dialogue with Shale about starting a family, and having kids, and how that was one of the joys in life...omg I just melted. Can you imagine Zev bouncing a baby on his knee? LOL and giving him a toy dagger to play with? I can just see the conversation now:
You know, I was just thinking about that conversation -- when Shale tells him that usually coupling ends in reproduction and Zevran says it's not a bad thing, starting a life can be very fun. I love how whenever someone ribs Zevran about the PC, he just says nice things about her and admits how much he likes her. Even Morrigan, when questioning his motives, he turns around and questions hers and then says his reason for being with them comes with a set of lovely eyes. And if you're on a PC, you can mod the game so you can kiss him whenever. However, I do think it's a bit out of character. I don't care, though!

Yes he is brutally honest. I do feel that he even exaggerates his being a horrible person at times. When he tells her that he really likes being an assassin is one of those times, because later on he lets out that he does have many regrets, and that he had to do many things that were distasteful to him.jenovan wrote:
I loved that lineOr, well, I suppose the exact line I got was "Is there no one I might stay for?" At that point my PC wasn't really aware of Zevran's feelings, but that was a major hint, and that was relatively early in their friendship. It truly caught me by surprise, and if I hadn't already decided that the PC was was going to try to romance Zevran anyway, that might have done it. X3
Yeah, that was exactly what happened to my PC. During my first play-through my mage (sad, silly mage) romanced Alistair, and I don't think that line came up. Or maybe I wasn't paying enough attention to Zevran at the time, but on my second one the line certainly popped up. My PC was determined not to let any romance get in the way, but that washed her resolve all but away.
One of my favorite lines (but expect to lose approval) is when he's talking about the mage who used him, if you tell him he seems awfully cold, he says to her something like, "You'd think with my youth and my training being cold would come naturally. Alas, it's not so."

Ouch! XD That sounds like jealousy, considering his general appreciation of Morrigan's beauty. (Or maybe he's making that all up... ;D)
Hmm, speaking of things that do upset Zevran, I was replaying the first time he offers his massage skills, to play with the dialogue afterwards... It seems that if you really press him about the "what if this was all just a plot to kill me", he takes it rather badly. It's hard to tell in the conversation itself, of course -- with him covering up everything in his jocular way -- but the PC got a -9 approval for that! Ouch!

Ok, yeh, you lose like 10 approval points, but you must have answered the rest badly
Wow, I'm sad for myself now . . . I know way too much about the whole Zevran romance. But a tip, as long as your honest and straight forward, he won't get too upset, but if you're coy or play hard-to-get, you will lose approval. It just plays out so differently than the Ali romance where you get points for being bendable and romantic. Though even with Ali, he seems to prefer it when you're at least showing your own mind rather than just saying "oh, I feel the same way."
WTB a life. Wow, I have one. WTB one I don't neglect for this game!

Strangely, it is not so out of character, given Zevran's background as an Antivan. Antiva is supposed to be similar to the Italian city states, and Italians, like many other Mediterranian cultures, LOVE kids. Even hard-core mafia hitmen mad dog killers love kids, and not to often have families on the side from their extracurricular activities.
And technically, your PC can breed with Zevran, since he is not a Warden. I'm sure he won't mind that it might take a little more effort, since he will be happy for all the practice you get in the meantime.

Ok, yeh, you lose like 10 approval points, but you must have answered the rest badlyYou can get up to +17 approval on that encounter (OMG< I cannot believe I know all this stuff). Since I always ask him about that AND ask him about love, I still don't lose approval on that whole thing -- I usually gain between 5 and 12 depending.

I *think* the post-shag dialogue seems to be the same for both genders of PCs... Hehe, +17?! XD I think the most I've seen is +12, but that was slightly out of character for the PC... the "official" playthrough I went through netted +9, I think. The PC called him a public menace (I wonder if Zevran likes that or not... XD), but didn't bring up the "what if you were trying to kill me", since, as Zevran points out, it's a bit late to ask that. (Also, dear PC is a bit naive. ;D)
Hmm, honesty... what about forwardness? I know he seems amused when you take him up right away on things. It would be horribly out of character for my PC (he is shy, but honest -- which, by the by, doesn't seem to be well-supported by the dialogue options at times ;D), but that might be something to try on another playthrough...

Ok, on the female, if you approach him, you can get up to 22 points approval (at least, that's the most I've gotten). I figured out either a bug or an easter egg that switches his status to Love (even though it really acts the same as adore until the Taliesen encounter) so I will never get more than 12 points approval ever again on that encounter . . . Being too forward isn't great either, nor is being hard to get. So I will put my spoiler on major approval here, and if you don't want to know it, don't read it! When he asks if there's something you'd like assassinated, tell him that you had forgotten that part. Then tell him he's free to take another shot at it. Tell him you set the rules, not him, and tell him it's about damn time. Afterwards, it doesn't matter if you call in a menace or if you thought you seduced him. You lose 10 points if you ask him if he's still planning on killing you, and another 7 if you ask him about love. However, if you do those two together along with asking him what happens now between them, his status switches to Love. Again, the game still treats it as "adore" but it's fun to have it up there. If you're not at 100 and you want to keep it at love, don't go back to the tent. Raising by gifts or conversation, however, doesn't change it to adore. And once it's at 100, going to the tent won't put it back to adore.

*grin* I meant the kissing anywhere was out of character. I think him wanting kids with the PC is entirely in character and I feel bad for him that that's the one thing she probably can't give him. It's why my PC when made queen tells Alistair she going to be trying to have a child with someone else. And keep Zevran around of course.

I haven't heard this Shale/Zevran banter, but I read if your character is male he explains to Shale that offspring aren't really likely to appear.
Well, the dog brought Jack a little boy in the Denerim market once ("If he stays with us, he has to fight darkspawn."), so I suppose if Zevran really wants kids they can turn them up from somewhere.

As for kids, well over here a married gay couple can adopt just as a married hetero couple can. But they do have to be married. (Yes, you can marry your beloved here, no matter if its a hetero- or a homosexual marriage). So maybe that's an option too, instead of relaying on Dog. I mean, my dog is in the habit of bringing me the strangest things

Ooooh, now I want to try that again with the male... I don't remember seeing a "forgotten that part" option, but I could be wrong. It'd be interesting if the dialogue tree was different, though! I know Zevran had a line specifically mentioning "another man" a few branches in when my PC approached him. I'll have to try it out this evening, unless someone beats me to it.

LOL
I think one of the major appeals of Zev to me is that he may not come out and kiss you each time you ask, or say "Maker's breath! but you're beautiful!" however...in his side conversations with your travelling companions, you *know* how much he cares about you, and his loyalty is unswerving, his devotion unconditional.
This post is awesome. I love it. I, too, was kind of surprised by his dialogue with Shale. Anyone who says that he's a latino lover stereotype would have to ignore that part. I like to think that my female pc and Zev do manage to have a kid at some point.
On the subject of the dialogue trees when you ask him into your tent- I fount it amusing that if you say "I had forgotten about that part" followed by the "you can have another go at me if you want" and then "what rules would those be?" and then (as it seems someone else pointed out "It's about damn time"He seems to lose no approval. Apparently your tone is teasing, but there is no way to tell. He responds to this with my favorite (other than the dark city one) line in the game.

Doing the "I had forgotten about that part"/"you can have another go at me if you want"/"I set the rules" nets me a "Yes sir, but I don't submit to interrogation"... aside from the sir, does the female PC get the same?
On the other hand, "I bet you're good at a lot of things" prompts Zevran to say "Hmm. That's quite an offer, especially coming from another man... if we are both speaking of the same thing." Contrast? Compare?

Zevran's rules of engagement, however, are brilliant. XD

I'm a writer, and I've misread him. I missed an appeal Zevran must have, and I'd like to understand it better. What makes him click with you, if he does?
This is an awesome question. I think I can keep my answer fairly short. Personally, I'm not superswept away by Zevran or anything, but here's a concise list of why women would want him (from a fellow writer's perspective, and from a female's):
1. He's a bad boy. Taboo? Definitely. (But none the less, true.) For the women that don't normally go for the bad guy... well, it is an RPG scenario where it feels safer to allow yourself the chance of fall for the kind of guy you would normally avoid in real life. There's just something hot about someone who bends/breaks the rules (or just makes up their own!).
2. Every woman who falls for a ****ty guy like our fictional friend Zev, usually has a vanity complex -- this varries from the self-conscious-and-wants-to-feel-wanted all the way to the I'm-super-perfect-and-everyone-should-love-me. Secretly, (or not so secretly) regardless of whether or not they are falling for him, they want to suceed at being the one to turn him around from his ****ty ways. To make a man who doesn't fall in love fall in love with you... that's winning a gold medal in the Girl World Olympics.
Although I probably sound really harsh towards my own gender, the truth is the truth. Even if it's just a barely audible whisper of desire in the backs of our minds, I don't think any self-aware woman could deny feeling what I've described above at some point in their lives (or wildest fantasies).
