I just don't understand the need for a VO. DA:O worked fine without it, and even if a portion of the fanbase complained about it, DA:O still sold far beyond expectations, so why do they think it wasn't successful enough? Maybe if it hadn't been quite as successful as it was, they might have just let it do its thing and be an old-fashioned niche RPG series, but now they see it as a potentially big franchise that they can muck around with and market as mainstream. Serious disappointment.
VO is not necessary for a main character. Bethesda's games do not have VOs for their characters, yet they are still very, very successful. From what I've gathered, New Vegas won't have PC VO either, but I don't hear a ton of b*tching and whining about that. I've never seen anything indicating that the number of people calling for VO really outweight the number who want no VO.
Some of us were waiting years for a game like DA:O. There have been other good RPGs out there, but DA:O managed to capture something different and unique--and the amount of character customization available was a
large part of that. DA:O was the first time where I felt like I could really make most any character I wanted. DA2 does not look like it will do the same--how am I supposed to make both a jerk thug character and a naively
innocent paladin character with the same voice and origin?
And while we don't know everything about the game yet, I just have to say: when announcing a brand new game, shouldn't the first things you advertise be things that make your fans extremely excited so they can't wait to hear more? Right now I should be on the edge of my seat in anticipation, but I'm not, and neither are a ton of other people who really really loved DA:O. Maybe there is good to come, but I'm unconvinced.
And ejoslin, I agree with all your points about the romances. The joy, the love, the heartbreak, the feeling of being a complete jerk, those all would have been dulled if suddenly a character voice you didn't get to choose bursts in to ruin the moment. Suddenly you're just a voyeur looking on at other people's interactions, instead of feeling like it's your own story.
Blah. I need to stop ranting.
