QUESTION for the people who have done the male Zevran romance. I just want to confirm that you can tell Zevran off the bat that the Warden is straight. I swear I remember that option, but it's been quite awhile since I've played a male.
I can't seem to play a female character without wanting to kill her, so all but one of my playthroughs is male; and yes, it is possible to turn off the male romance without an approval ding. For all of the conversation trees early on (the sexuality talk in the personal conversation section, the, "So you think I'm handsome?" talk etc., as long as the PC chooses the response that is the equivalent of, "I'm not offended but it isn't going to happen." there is no approval drop. In fact, if the PC avoids commenting on his flirting until his approval is high enough to get the talk about his sexuality, Zev says something along the lines of, "If this will be a problem, it would be good to know that now, no?" (paraphrased, obviously). if the PC chooses, "That isn't a problem for me." Zev will comment on how it would be for many, then will make a comment that sort of test the waters as to whether the PC might be interested. The, "I'm not offended but I'm not interested." line turns off the romance entirely and ends with a small bump in approval (+2, I believe). The romance can be turned back on, but it requires that the PC deliberately choose the "ravish" line or something similar. Zev stops flirting if the male PC turns him down. Even if the PC is rude about it, the approval drop is very small.
Also, while there are few Zevran specific gifts, if his approval is relatively low, I have gotten good approval from wine (up to +4), the tiara (up to +6), and silver jewelry (up to +4). Combined with the approval bumps from talking with him, I've always ended up with him at +100, even on friend playthroughs.
Edit: Sorry for the convoluted phrasing. I really need more sleep!
There is also a pretty substantial bump if you listen to Sophia's proposition at Warden's Keep, even if you don't take her up on it. His dialogue there cracks me up every time.
