QUESTION for the people who have done the male Zevran romance. I just want to confirm that you can tell Zevran off the bat that the Warden is straight. I swear I remember that option, but it's been quite awhile since I've played a male.

You pretty much have that option the whole time. Even up when he gives you the ring and proposes, I think you still get some option to say, "But we're both men!" or something like that. I think the first time he makes an advance, he says something like... does it bother you? And you can reply with No, not at all, or No, I don't mind but I'm not interested... or something like that.

I can't seem to play a female character without wanting to kill her, so all but one of my playthroughs is male; and yes, it is possible to turn off the male romance without an approval ding.  For all of the conversation trees early on (the sexuality talk in the personal conversation section, the, "So you think I'm handsome?" talk etc., as long as the PC chooses the response that is the equivalent of, "I'm not offended but it isn't going to happen." there is no approval drop.  In fact, if the PC avoids commenting on his flirting until his approval is high enough to get the talk about his sexuality, Zev says something along the lines of, "If this will be a problem, it would be good to know that now, no?" (paraphrased, obviously).  if the PC chooses, "That isn't a problem for me." Zev will comment on how it would be for many, then will make a comment that sort of test the waters as to whether the PC might be interested.  The, "I'm not offended but I'm not interested." line turns off the romance entirely and ends with a small bump in approval (+2, I believe).  The romance can be turned back on, but it requires that the PC deliberately choose the "ravish" line or something similar.  Zev stops flirting if the male PC turns him down.  Even if the PC is rude about it, the approval drop is very small.

Also, while there are few Zevran specific gifts, if his approval is relatively low, I have gotten good approval from wine (up to +4), the tiara (up to +6), and silver jewelry (up to +4).  Combined with the approval bumps from talking with him, I've always ended up with him at +100, even on friend playthroughs.

Edit: Sorry for the convoluted phrasing.  I really need more sleep!

There is also a pretty substantial bump if you listen to Sophia's proposition at Warden's Keep, even if you don't take her up on it.  His dialogue there cracks me up every time.

Ok, here is my final draft (I hope) on that particular question:

All characters have romance starting lines.  Zevran's are actually more obvious than most.  Here are a few.
Handsome elf like you? I can think of a few things.
There's always a use or two for a handsome elf.
What is it you fancy?
So you never mix business with pleasure?
Do you stare at everyone that way?
After I ravish you in celebration?
I consider us more than friends.
Handsome?
"Beautiful" is it?
Now you're flattering me.

If you choose any of these lines, he will make sure you are actually interested in a very obvious way, and at that point you can stop the romance from starting, though it may cost you a little approval, or you can allow the romance to start.  If you do start the romance, keep in mind that breaking up with any companion does cause disapproval most of the time.

(OK quoting over, now responding to Sami Jo's post)

Unfortunately, there is really no surefire way of knowing if the romance can be restarted, male or female, until after the breakup.  Sometimes it's restartable, and sometimes, those lines just aren't there.  I've tried breakups in many different ways at various times, and there just doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason why sometimes it can be restarted and sometimes why it can't be.  I've even had the "stare" line appear after a brutal "in love" breakup.

I wish there WAS a clear formula on how to restart ended romances -- the romance flags in the game are just weird.

Absolutely.  She stole all of Zevran's romance restart flags while he and my warden were having sexytime one night.  And started using them too :crying:

Looks good! Maybe you could add in which turnoff lines give above average approval hits? I know I was a little surprised when I got -10 for the "Don't bother. I'm onto you," line after he calls you beautiful. I really should have just reloaded  and said something else, but I thought I'd tough it out... Bad, bad decision. :pinched:
Although, they're probably pretty obvious and I was just really dumb to not know with that one.

And the weird flags are definitely annoying. I think especially so on the bisexual characters since there are more possibilities. But I'm worried for when I replay my CE- I break up with Zevran for Alistair, so I have to be really sure I'll be able to turn it back on after Taliesan...

From what I can tell, if you break up with him and it puts you back at 'warm,' the "More than a friend" or "Do you stare at everyone like that" lines should come up. Once you get the approval up to 'friendly' it seems to have cemented you as non-romantic. But I haven't played around enough to know for sure...

Nope, unfortunately.  Sometimes those lines are there, and sometimes they go away forever.  And it happens at varying approval ratings.  I had one brutal "In love" breakup that had him down to 82 friendly afterwards, and he was staring.  And plenty of times, after going from interested to warm, the lines were gone for good.

And honestly, I don't have the patience to go through and get approval drops on all rejections, especially since other answers in the dialogs will adjust that final number as well.  But if anyone is willing to do that, I am willing to put that in.  Though that actually would probably be a good topic for another FAQ.  Hint hint

Edit: Hopefully something comes out and fixes that whole thing, because you ARE supposed to be allowed to start a romance twice, and it would make sense if it happened before the relationship got serious.

The same thing happens with Alistair, too, though.  Sometimes the romance is just not restartable.  If the "handsome" line isn't there, then you're not going to get the restart lines when giving him his special gifts (I've seen plenty of people say as a fact that those lines are always there, but they are NOT).

A little toooo similar, perhaps! I think she's going to go Blood Magic and Spirit Healer- she's full of contradictions. I don't have a great backstory for her yet, but the whole Alienage thing doesn't really fit her... I feel like she was born in a traveling caravan or something similar, but was taken to the circle at a very young age. *starts planning out ideas* Yours is very nice, though, and I like the connection with your HN!

Her portrait uploaded to my profile, too, if you want to see it. Now if only my other characters would...

Our account hasn't uploaded in months.  I don't know why and I'm not talented enough to fix it.

This is my mage character below.  She didn't have arcane warrior yet in this shot, she's covering up better now.  Posted Image  My inspiration for her looks-wise was Erlina, who I think is the prettiest elf in the game.  And I like a fairly prominent, at least a longish, nose.  To get her nose right, I had to tweak one that had the point sticking way out and try to get the bridge straighter, so there is a small crook in it and from the side she actually looks like her nose was broken at some point, something which I incorporate into the "crisis" of her back story.

She steals all of Morrigan's romance flags, including the initial ones.  That's a whole new level of jealousy.  Unless I start the romance with Morrigan before Lelianna joins the party, it is permanently turned off the second ninja-bard joins.

I am going to end up with a new PC much earlier than I had planned.  My Xbox version of the game is too bugged for words.

Ahh, well forget I mentioned anything! But really, ejoslin, 15 playthroughs in and you still don't have all his lines memorized with corresponding approval changes? For shame. :P

She could be my CE's twin!

The mage robes....ugh!  The PC either looks as if she should be swinging from a stripper pole or she is wrapped so tightly from head to toe that she wouldn't be able to walk.  It might be great for seduction, but I'm always afraid my mage is going to end up mooning the party if she moves wrong. :P

Maybe they are related!  You do get the idea that elves in Thedas are a little, ahem, inbred.

Amen to the difficulties with dressing our mages.  These days she's in Varathorn's Armor and it's not bad, but I definitely wouldn't call it high fashion.  Her boots and gauntlets are mage-specific so they don't look bad but don't match the silverite, though by dumb luck they do match each other.  I usually have her wielding her staff rather than sword & shield (she switches to Spellweaver when melee enemies close in, but usually they're deep-fried darkspawn long before then) and I do like the look of an armored mage.  A battlemage is just how a Warden mage should be, IMNSHO.

Not that Zevran would mind the "stripper" look.  He was probably bummed when she started donning armor.  Posted Image

It doesn't seem to me that heavy metal armor is particularly conducive to ass staring... XD

I think my mage seems more healer than arcane warrior... I don't mind the mage robes too much, anyway. At least, they look better on elves than on humans for some reason. And come now, the stripper robes just signal your mage's transition into a life of freedom, amIright?

Here's my mage, so you don't have to go to the trouble to see. Just felt like posting it. :innocent:

<quote>And Sten tried to attack my DE in Haven, funny that. My little DE girl takes out Sten </endquote>

How do you get Sten to attack you ?

I get the impression that Sten doesn't like my mage char... too bad. I've been nice to him. I know he doesn't like mages, but I would have thought by now I'd be acceptable.

Re Mage robes---they're horrid. I don't mind the Egyptian looking thingies on Raven, my first mage (who is in the pic <---- I use) but that style looks silly on other characters.

Regarding Shadow spec in the expansion == but I thought Zevran wouldn't be there ?

Now you all have me intrigued about playing a DE. I can't decide between Dwarf or DE ranger/archer for next play through.... hmmm....

Grats on the FAQ. A really nice job.

And all of you speak (well, write) great English and it's good to have an international forum.

Varathorn's Armor is actually pretty form-fitting.  That's one reason she's stayed in it, despite the lackluster stats- I like my women warriors to still look like women.  Zevran approves +10.  Posted Image  I also think the blue makes it one of the more attractive armors in the game, certainly for a lighter armor.  Might put her in Wade's heavy dragonbone for the final battle.

Take him with you to Haven.  If he is above a certain approval, he will just challenge you verbally.  It's actually a part of the game I look forward to now.  It is a test, not an attack, and part of earning Sten's respect which is one of the more difficult and thus more rewarding challenges of the whole game.

I love Sten.  Like Zevran and Morrigan, the more I play the more I like him.  Being called "kadan" by him is right up there with some of Zevran's and Alistair's lines for sheer sexiness.  When he finally opens up to you, it's also a floodgate.

Okay, I know this is totally OT Zevran, but, after having finished the books I have to wonder...age of Alistair....

Based on the books Cailan was ~10 when Alistair was born 9this is assuming that Alisatir is Finoa's kid). Anora was older than Cailan and nearing 30. Possibly, based on the books, we could assume that Anora and Cailan are 1-2 years within each others ages. So if Anora was let's say 29, and go with the 1 year age diff, that would put Cailan at 28 years old and Alistair at 18.

Alistair does not look or sound anything like an 18 year old. Unless he's got a massive load of testosterone going through his bloodstream. (or the taint somehow aged him)

And on another through process, another thread was wondering ages of characters, and a lot of people were stating that they saw Zevran to be in his mid 30's (I know the toolset says mid 20's, but we also know the toolset is wrong for Alistair (early 30's)). I imagine the majority of my PC's (so far CE or DE) to be 18-20....and if Zevran was mid 30's.....hmmm. Nope couldn't do it. Maybe if he was 30 and my PC was 20.....

Do we have any reliable data on his age, or what are your impressions of Zev's age?

RE Sten challenging me, I didn't take the path of getting him to verbally back down. When he challenged my decision to go to Haven, I told him if he wasn't happy he could leave and he said he wasn't thinking of leaving but of taking over command. I told him "I'd like to see you try" and then battle and Sten bloodshed ensued.

his response afterwards was "Well that was harder than I thought. You are stronger than you appear" and to me it was funny since right before he had capitulated, I had done a very nice backstab on him and he was fountaining blood from that stab, even while in the cut scene.

(I love Sten.....he's usually first character to +90 approval for me, even when he's talking about the Qun, and my PCs answer like they don't understand, think the Qun is oppressive/wrong my PC's still get approval, I think once I've gotten disapproval from him. If he was a romancable character.....*sigh*)

Yeah, if he's Fiona's kid the best estimates put him at 19-20. I honestly don't think it's that farfetched (part of his looking older is just the way the male body looks in the game, and I think the Maric genes didn't hurt), but we don't know for sure. I'm not sure that much can be added to that discussion here.

As for Zevran, I asked about that before as well. People around here seem to think ~30, mid-30s being a bit outside the range. I personally see him as ~27-30- young enough to still be cocky and arrogant but old enough that he's been around for awhile. The toolset says 24, I think, but that to me sounds too young. It doesn't really fit with his appearance, or his past dallyings with people such as Isabela (the good old days).

*scratches head* So he was 12 in the epilogue of The Stolen Throne, and 9 in my copy of The Calling, but he was supposed to be 5?

*sigh*

A poor Quality Assurance Quality Control program seems to have been in place for the booktogamestobook timelines.
