Just finished my third playthrough - two with zevvie, one(the first) with Alastair.  Gawd Ali is such a little brat at Landsmeet...I almost let him go, but relented at the last moment...I should have said no to Morrigan and let him die to the dragon.  It was very interesting - even though I hardened him, all he did was whine to me about NOT wanting to be king.  he never did that with my female human noble (i was mage elf this go round) gah! /palm to forehead slap.
Zev chose to stay with me and we rebuilt the Grey Wardens together...although it wasn't "he stayed with his love...for a while" - it seems that he stayed with you and the Grey Wardens for the duration...not just "a while".
I got the whole "L" word convo this time around...missed some of it the first time *sighs* oh, I am hopelessly hooked on the hunky assassin  I've already started a fourth round so I can get Zev's story in the Fade - haven't done that yet with him.

It's well worth it!  I found his bit in the fade to be incredibly endearing.

Ok, I'm going to spoiler this, so don't read if you don't want to know.  But I find this one of the most telling insights into his character and his flirting.

Spoiler starts here!  In Zevran's dream, he's on the rack during his initiation of the crows, being tortured.  When the PC wakes him, he refers to it as a bad memory, so it most likely really happened to him.  When you get to the sloth demon, however, he asks where all the wood nymphs went.  He would like everyone to think that all he thinks about is sex and pleasure, and not have people aware of how much suffering he has actually endured.

I have quite a few more thoughts on this, but this will do to start!

RE: the Fade stuff just above (not reposting for spoilers ;)), you know, I never looked at it that way, but that's a very good point... Zevran is trying, once again, to lighten things rather than reveal anything. Interesting...

On the topic of Zevran's faithfulness, as a matter of his own principles... I came across this bit when playing around with dialogue options last night. Fairly soon after I picked him up (finally got him on my PC runthrough, hooray! ;D), the PC tried to ask him about teaching others to be an assassin, and since Zev's approval isn't high enough, he says he won't. I usually say "that's fine, I won't press you" or whatever, but for kicks, I picked "what if I order you to?"

He laughs, and says something like "Now you're ordering me to break a vow I made? This is an unexpected turn of events." He still deflects you and says he'll think about it, like above, but you lose 5 approval for that! Comparing that to his other comments or options, it seems he's more concerned about his vow, and his word, than the actual act of betraying the Crows... it's clearly very important to him. An interesting tidbit, I thought.

Yeh, the fade sequence really puts all his flirting in a whole different light.

That is interesting.  Well, he does tell you he's a very loyal person as long as it doesn't involve whom he's being loyal to expecting him to die.  Of course, at the end he's more than willing to die, but the PC doesn't expect it from him either . . .

What I like most about Zevran (of course, I have a long list of things I like most about him) is he is just as faithful as a friend as a lover.  It's about his character, not about his feelings.

He says as long as he's not expected to die as a punishment for failure, and he's referring to the Crows wanting to kill him for failing to kill the PC.  Death in a failed attack is just to be expected.  Of course attacking the Archdemon is going above and beyond the call of duty.

You're absolutely right.  It's another interesting contrast between Alistair and Zevran, as well.  Alistair takes that death blow if he ever was at 100 love with the PC.  He is more than willing to if they're friends as well, but there's also a lot of glory attached to that offer, and he gets the gloriest of deaths, and goes down in history as the king who ended the blight. He knows this.

Zevran, whether friend or lover, would take that death as well if he were able and in fact wants to.  But it's not because of not wanting to see the PC die, nor would he get glory as in the case of Alistair -- it's for no gain of his own at all.  How protective he is of the PC as well as loyal is so touching, and is there, again, whether as friend or as lover.  And how that is portrayed without making him seem like a tool is pretty amazing as well.

Alright, to the Zevran groupies: I can't contain my curiosity and I still have to go through Orzammar which is such a long slog. My character is at 100 Adore, Zev has told her about Rinna, is that it for relationship stuff until after city elf alienage and Landsmeet/Taliesin? This happens with Alistair too, that at some point the new dialogue dries up and it feels like you're in limbo until you can get to the Landsmeet and things start happening again.

Yes, that's it.  You have to wait for Talisen BUT . . .  He has quite a bit to say in Orzammar.  That's one thing I like about Zevran.  Though the private conversations are over until the landsmeet is called, he still has a lot to say.  And the conversations to come . . . just wowza.

Agreed, it's still interesting, and the novelty of them fighting as a team hasn't worn off.  I also put him in the ancient elven helmet which goes pretty well with his default suit and makes him look quite sexy and dangerous IMO.  Eye candy, aaah.  Posted Image

I think it was you who mentioned that Zevran's kiss with a dwarf female is the most passionate?  I'm jealous!  Though selfishly on behalf of my city-elf character I'd like to think that because Rinna was the first who "opened" him, that there is something about a peer companion he finds appealing.  Funny, though I didn't plan it this way, they even look similar- like they could be cousins- and are both rogues.  I told my husband (whose eyes glaze over at such things, I'm sure), "They're going to have such cute elf babies- and at craft time they'll say 'come children, let's make deadly traps and poisons, won't that be fun!  Yaay!!!'"  LOL  And as luck would have it, shortly after that I got the Shale dialogue about children, which was so endearing and surprising.

Return to the alienage will be fun.  I plan to pretend to be sick in order to sneak into the hospice.  I picture my character telling the front guards "You know, I do feel a little run down" (I love that line), and then giving Zevran a little wink as she is taken inside.  So much fun, ha!  Ohhh, but when it comes time to break out of Fort Drakon... geez...  she fell for Nelaros, so will have such terrible flashbacks at saying "Zevran will come for us."  Speaking of Nelaros, I think she will eventually understand better than most about Zevran giving her the earring. It's Rinna's earring, right?  She has still kept her wedding ring.

I think there is as much time spent at the end of the dwarf kiss with him pulling back and looking into the PC's eyes as there is the entire elf kiss.  Right now I'm playing an elf mage and they  definitely LOOK the best together, but the kiss . . . lame!

I do like Zevran's comments in the alienage with a city elf.  You may want to have Ali in your party to prevent a glitch.

The earring is NOT RInna's earring.  It's from his first kill with the crows.  Oh, ugh, that would be horrid if it had been Rinna's.

Personally, with Zevran, I always took his heavy flirting with everyone as jest. I've got male friends in rl who are exactly the same way, they make these horrendously dirty comments every time a gal turns around, but there's absolutely no seriousness to them. And with Zevran, it's great to peel away these layers of jest and find out what is under it all. As it turns out, there's a lot going on with him, and his true self is rather different than his over-confident, sleazy jokester that he portrays. That wins me every time.

Ah, well I could see it, if it were in the spirit of him emotionally moving on.  That is how I could see my PC at least thinking about giving him Nelaros' ring.  In a sense saying, this was the past and you are my future.  But, I will just have to wait and see what transpires, don't want too many spoilers!

I must confess I am so hooked on Zev, that my 4th playthrough (third romance with him) I made a dark haired elven beauty with the same tattoo as him (I used the project Beauty Zevran - option 5) he is SO much hotter with dark hair!

Re. glitch, is it something that comes up if you've romanced both? Because I didn't exactly romance Alistair, but did get to the point where he was interested and so I got some glitchy reactions. Like, Wynne's lecture about "you're quite taken with each other," there were both Alistair and Zevran responses and I replied "you know about Zevran and me?" but she responded back as if I had said Alistair.

Do you have any screen caps?  I'm not talented enough to use console and anyway I stay away from such things since it's my husband's PC actually, so I don't want to mess up his game in some way.  But I've heard about these mods and am curious.

Ooh, I'd like to see screencaps as well, especially with your elf!  :D

Addai, installing an NPC appearance mod is pretty simple and I don't think it's too "dangerous" -- you just take the given file and put it in a specific place :3  Don't want it anymore? Delete it!

Hmm, I wonder if there's a "show off your modded NPCs" thread somewhere... specifically for Zevran, of course!  ;)  Especially since there seems to be this big blonde vs. brunette thing. Posted Image  I've got my own mod, but I'm still tweaking him to my liking a bit more before showing him off. OK, question:

I meant to romance Zev all the way through this time around, but I've somehow lost the ability to...I mean, he's at 'Care' somewhere, but there isn't even a 'tent' option in the private line. I think it happened during a camp conversation not long after he joined my party where he said he had a question for me and I basically changed the subject by telling him I wanted to ask about something else. Is there any way to go back, or are we stuck in friend mode now?

Hmmm, I've gotten that only if Ali was still at adore.  I often get Ali to 100 love before dumping him for Zevran but as long as Ali is safely at friendly, Wynne only asks about Zevran.  But no, the glitch in the Alienage happens no matter what -- Alistair has a comment there, and if he's not in the party, you get a weird blank screen.

Edit: I use project beauty Zevran 7 with the original tattoo.  Slightly older and more masculine looking, and completely, mmmmmmm!

No, you're not stuck in friend mode if he's in "care."  Try giving him either the gloves or the boots OR . . . does he stare at you?  If not, raising his affection through gifts should be enough.  When you're stuck as a friend, you'll be "warm."

Edit: You'll have a much more satisfying romance with him, though, if you don't play word games.  His answers are better, his dialogs are better, when you're pretty straight forward with him.

Second edit: this game can be glitchy though.  If you have a save where you could ask him into your tent before, you may want to revert back.  You should be fine, but Zev's status can get bugged.  I've had him at interested all the way up to adore, I've had him at care immediately after neutral, and right now I have him at love though he really is only at adore.

Ugh, third edit:  Further thinking on Zevran's status not being completely tied to the number or game events, is it that it's buggy, or that it responds more than most to the dialog options.  I've noticed this with Sten as well.  If you take him along and ask him questions about things he's mentioned, he gets friendly even before you get his sword for him.  With everyone else, it seems to be straight forward based on the number and whether or not you've done their personal quest.

I've given him the boots and a couple of other things already...it's possible he's at 'Warm' though, I'm not actually sure and can't check until I get home. I wasn't trying to play games with him, I just hadn't noticed that option before and wanted to see where it went. He still gave me approval points at the end of the conversation, so I figured everything was fine and went on with what we were doing. I didn't notice the other issue until some time later. :-/

My first time through I played all sorts of word games because I was romancing Ali at the time and just flirting with Zevran.  I was surprised at how much better the answers were my next time through, when I didn't avoid anything.  One of the nicest earliest responses I found for him is when he's pinning you down as to your intentions of the future when he first moves out of neutral.  If you get the option "I'd like that" when he asks if you'll want him to stay afterwards, he gives the sweetest answer.  It's actually what got me hooked on him to begin with.

Edit: If he's warm and not staring at you, you're pretty sunk. He won't persue the PC at all if the PC makes it clear from the start that she's not interested.  Unlike, say, Leliana, who falls in love even IF you try to avoid it.

Thanks, I'll check it when I get home. If he's at 'Warm,' I guess I'll have to look at my autosaves and see if there's something not too far back.

I believe Alistair was at Care.  I thought I was safe since I accepted his rose but told him I wasn't interested in that way.  It's a lesson like real life, you have to clobber a guy over the head or he doesn't get subtle hints!  I knew I was in trouble when I got the Wynne-Alistair where do babies come from dialogue, though my character had in no way slept with Alistair or even told him he was handsome etc.  Unfair!  Then I got the dialogue with Zevran asking me to choose, and later with Alistair saying "so I heard you are with someone else."  Alistair took it well (I said "I was hoping to tell you myself" and "thank you for understanding" and got a +1) or else I would have been bummed.

Oh, and pictures, people!  Pictures!  Posted Image

Yeh, he looks a bit surprised and says something like, "So would I, I would think." then a big approval jump.  With Zevran, it definitely is a matter of getting what you give.  And while in some ways he tries to distance himself and make it seem more casual, even from the start it's pretty obvious it isn't.

You see, that's why I think that all his bravado, flirting, boasting, etc. is Zevran going for deflection, cover-up, and shock value. Because in unguarded moments, or when taken by surprise, he often slips up and lets the real 'Zevran' peek through

I also think he tries to shock the PC simply to see what the PC is made of. He wants to see how my PC reacts to his statements. All this talk about 'taking pleasure where it presents itself', and 'no comittments', and so on are proven to be a cover up when he tells her that he wishes to know if there is any kind of future for them. Very early on in the relationship even. It happened to my PC when she hadn't even had intimate relations with him yet.

I mean all these, 'oh I don't know, sex is just a hobby' sort of comments are negated with his insisting not only once but several times that my PC commits herself to a future/monogamy/telling him to stay.

Lol, yeah, the wood nymphs cracked me up.

That first conversation comes up before you have the chance to go to his tent -- it happens as soon as you move out of neutral.  I really like that part.  WIth Alistair, it's not until you have sex that he even considers the future -- funny how more casual the sex is for him, really, even though he's a virgin and wants to be in love.  His little speech before is also all about him, wanting to throw caution to the wind, blah blah blah.  Actually, I thought Alistair asking was one of the biggest turn offs in the game.  (I know, I know, sorry Alistair fans).
