Agreed, Minaleth. I have the game installed in English (not my mother-tongue), and in the beginning it felt like: "What? What did I say?"

It's even worse when someone asks the PC if they agree (esp Zev is an expert in this). The possible replies are basically yes or no. Unfortunately negation works differently in english and my first language and I always get confused which answer is which.

I changed dubbing to English as soon as I installed the game, but I couldn't find a way to change subtitles. So it was double confusing :? Fortunately, Dialogue Tweaks and some other mods changed lots of text to English. It turned out some of PC's lines meant something completely different than I had assumed before.  I even managed to inadvertently turn Zevran's romance off thanks to poor translation >.<

Does he suffer?  I know when I persuaded Alistair to go through with the ritual he looked like he was enjoying it when it came to the cut scene.   And no guilt trips afterwards, apparently.   I was a bit fed up because it had taken so much work to get him in my tent earlier in the game.

Yah absolutely Loghain suffers through the DS. Someone put the scene up on YouTube and he looks utterly horrified and for a guy who's scared of nothing and no one--he looks purely terrified of her and she looks like the cat with the cream.

I'm surprised he was *able* to impregnate her after that scene.:pinched:

Since quite a few don't have access to the toolset (console players, toolset refusing to work, etc.), but seem to enjoy seeing the voiceover comments, I'll post some. :)

I find the scenes where Zevran comments on the PC's decisions to be particularly interesting. I'm not sure how to best post the dialogue trees, hopefully you'll be able to follow it.

Here for example are his comments about Ruck:

PC (after conversation with Ruck): I should go.

Zevran: I am not what one would call a sympathetic man, but seeing him like this pains me. (cool)

We should at least put him out of his misery. (emotionless)

Ruck: Is not so bad. The dark and the burning keeps Ruck warm... warm like Mother's arms--

Zevran: His mind is gone, and his body will soon follow. I have seen victims of poisoning in better shape. (disdainful)

PC: He may not live as we do, but that's no reason to kill him.

Zevran (if Persuasion check succeded): I guess you're right. We'll just leave him here to his fate.(grundging)

Zevran (if Persuasion check failed): That is not my point. (cold)

He is no longer who he used to be. If his sanity were intact, he wouldn't want this. (with distaste)

I suppose you will do as you wish. (giving up)

or

PC: Perhaps you're right.

Zevran: I hate to say it, but leaving him alive is crueler than just killing him. (not a lot of emotion at the thought)

or

PC: Enough. I will not have you questioning my decisions.

Zevran: So I am to follow you like a dog and have no say in what we do? I see how it is. (angry)

I suppose you will do as you wish. (giving up)

That is very interesting.  my first reaction was, wow, that's now I pictured the scene at all.  But rereading it (after pasting it here), it actually is.  He's very emotionless at the thought of killing Ruck.  But the voice combined with the facial expressions of the animators show a very complete picture.  Also, you certainly don't get those choices -- you have no choice there at all but to kill Ruck.  I wish they had kept the additional choices in.  Though maybe not.  I do like it there that you have no choice at all.

I am so cursing my PC right now for not being able to run the toolkit!  Gah, these are GREAT!

Oh, and good morning!

Edit: And welcome Litllevoice!  And thank you!  I'm glad the FAQ helped you!

Oh, I need more coffee.

Me and my boyfriend have the same DA:O edition and he has subtitles in the other language, mine are in english. I think I've chosen this when installing, thus I believe reinstall will fix it because there is most definitely NO language choice in game options. From what I've seen, the original wording is MUCH MUCH better.
BTW I am relived that the PC lines misunderstandings are not only problem of not native speakers.

I've never applied involuntary euthanasia to Ruck.  I think Zevran's statement here is incorrect.  Ruck chose to eat darkspawn, although everyone knows that's a very bad idea, and chose not to kill himself while he was going insane, and now that he is insane still does not want to die.  So far none of my PCs have felt they have the right to kill him.

Hmmm I read both novels, and I don't remember reading anything about that - as long as you don't get the blood on you, you're ok, but geeze, try killing a darkspawn and NOT get any blood on you...Other than that, I have no idea.

Hmm, I don't remember exactly, but in the Calling, the Circle makes some potion, I think, for Maric so he can run off and play with the Wardens without falling prey to the Taint...

So I replayed the second earring conversation... screens are coming as soon as my game starts again. For some reason it is not working as well as it should.

I managed to get a -1 from Zev during that convo, no idea what I did. x"D

You told him, "I hope so." Ugh. I can't believe I know THAT one!

Edit: My theory on that approval loss is he wants to hear about what you feel about him, not the uncertainty of the future.

I can remember that I picked a line like that... and it is quite disturbing that you know that, yes. ;)
During that talk he looked so sad, I'm going to say that again just to get a screenshot of his face.

Afternoon All...

I'd just like to point out. *The Calling spoiler ahead*

The potion's were made using a mix of Darkspawn Magic and knowledge of the taint and the mage who made them was killed, which is why there is no cure for the taint currentily

Actually I find that a conflicting plot hole.

The mabari dogs get sick from the taint. The companions don't. Some soldiers at Ostagar are sick from the taint yet Cailin and his troops rush right in, as well as at the end of the game how many sick soldiers/militia/warriors/citizens would be taint-sick? Half the nation would be dead.

Ruck has nothing to eat so he eats the darkspawn and gets the taint. That part makes sense. As well, one of the soldiers in the dungeon says they ate darkspawn and became tainted.

So perhaps there's some sort of thing that happens where people get the taste for darkspawn blood while fighting them then become darkspawn eaters?

EDIT TO ADD: Also, in the Dalish story one fights darkspawn and does not get the taint until the mirror. Nor do the dwarves seem to get tainted.

Anyway, I don't think it's ever really explained very clearly unless someone saw something in DO:A that I missed.

It's a little vexing if you're trying to write a fic. I guess I'll just assume it takes a large dose unless you're unusually prone to getting infected, or whatever you would call it.

I'm usually scared of books related to video games or movies but since they're written by Gaider I'll track them down eventually.

For some reason my screenshots look terrible. I'm going to try again later...

And it seems like my game is bugged, I want to finish the Topsider quest, but I can't. I don't have the Topsider Blade. When I ran through the Deep Roads with my mage I noticed that the Ancient Darkspawn wasn't there and he has that blade. I visited the area where he is supposed to be again, and still; no ancient darkspawn. So I can't finish that quest. x.x'

Anyone had the same problem?

Well according to Alistair & Riordan to make GW's it's darkspawn + archdemon blood [which Loghain has taken somewhere according to Riordan] so I get that bit--it's the rest of it that makes no sense.

Allerleihrau, my laptop and MSSQL don't like one another, and that's why I can't get the toolset to work.

As for Ruck, I think that he would die eventually, and very terribly. I only know that from the loading screen, but when Oghren is in the party, things get a bit more explained.

Ruck calls the  archdemon and its voice 'beautiful'. It is doubtful that he is in full control of his senses. Now mind you, I have no clue what the 'horrible death' entails, but the picture the loading screen and the wiki paint are very dire indeed.
This is a bit I got from the wiki

***might be spoilerish****

Blight is also used to describe the disease spread by the darkspawn. It twists and corrupts all living organisms. Surviving animals and humanoids are driven mad and develop physical deformities if they do not perish from the disease. These creatures are known as Archdemons, Bereskarn, Blight Wolves, Broodmothers, Corrupted Spiders, and Ghouls.

In some cases these animals can make a full recovery if given early care (such as Mabari), however most have to be put down to prevent them from spreading the disease further. Surviving Dwarves, Elves, and Humans infected with the disease but who have not become Broodmothers or Ghouls are called Grey Wardens.

What the blight does not destroy, it corrupts

--From Codex Entry: Ghoul

Living creatures who contract the Taint from any Darkspawn normally die from the corruption. However, those ill-fated to survive become something twisted: Ghouls, or tainted humanoid creatures with a blotchy look and a sickly tone to their skin.

The term ghoul is actually derived from the behavior and
mannerisms associated with people who have become corrupted. It was
first observed in captives (humans, elves, and dwarves kept as a source
of food) of Darkspawn.
The constant, slow exposure to the Taint drove these unfortunate souls
to turn on their fellow captives, cannibalizing them whilst in the
grips of maddening pain and the will of the Archdemon.

Once infected, a ghoul will seek out the Darkspawn. Human ghouls are often used as craftsmen by the Darkspawn
(who are not known for the kind of skill required for smithing), but
even the healthiest human will die within a few months of having
turned.

I will admit I haven't read this whole thread yet (300+ pages will take a while *g*), but you guys are a riot.

I have a Zev-related/game-progress strategy question that I hope someone can answer for me. I'm playing a Mage who is currently in Lothering. Based on the suggestions in ejoslin's Romance FAQ, I'm planning to do either the Dalish or Redcliffe (blood magic) first so I get Zev a little quicker this time around. My question revolves around the Assassin "random encounter" when encountering it earlier in the game than I have in the past.

I've previously done Stone Prisoner and Warden's Peak (PS3 player, so no RtO for those plays since it just came out) before even going to my first main quest (Redcliffe, which I leave in the middle to go to the Tower so the Lyrium fade can be used). I say this because I find the assassin encounter rather difficult when it occurs after Redcliffe, the Tower, and the 2 DLCs, so I'm worried about how hard it will be if I'm not leveled up more by the side quests before doing it.

So,my question is this -- Is the assassin encounter more "survivable" with a lower level party? I know the DAO encounters are supposed to scale based on your level, but in the past, I've found the assassins to be one of the most difficult to get through without party members dying/getting injured.  It's going to be impossible to romance Zevran if he kills me before I have the chance to flirt with him, and I don't want to try this too early if it's just going to be frustrating.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Well I picked him up every time just before or after {?} Lothering after the cutaway.

Bombs--I did it with bombs. I love bombs. Two freeze bombs pretty much knock him cold and some acid flasks do major damage on the archers. Also, take the mage out simultaenously with him and the fight pretty much collapses down to whackfest and archer bopping. [watch for the traps]

The other trick is to beeline for Zev and the mage then take the rest out.

Zevran will always be a level higher than you at that encounter, so it will be a bit challenging, but I think it's easier at lower levels. Does you mage have crushing prison or paralyze? Disabling the mage in that encounter as soon as possible makes it far easier.
