was there any doubt he had issues? his mother died before he was even 5, his dad gets all depressed for several years pretty much ignores him and ends up running off to the deep roads with the grey wardens for god knows how long, he is then bossed around Anora since they where kids, his dad then dies at sea and he is stuck with loghain of all people as a father in law and he is married off to Anora who gets even bossier!

Oh crap.  Now I feel really bad for him.  That's not going to be good since he pisses any Warden I create off at Ostigar.

The mistresses that the manipulative Anora and her paranoid father *believe* he had.  Eamon's letter in RtO is chastising Cailin for not leaving her since she hasn't produced and heir and Eamon comments on how she led Cailin around by the nose. 

True... and there was a certain familiarity to Celene(? Orlesian empress)'s last letter...

Either way, if she wasn't popping out kids, maybe Cailan did have a few mistresses to see if any of them could even get pregnant by him. It could have been his problem, not Anora's.

I'm not sure I believe that he had all those mistresses at all, and I find it hard to believe that he managed to sneak across the border to have a liason with the Orlesian empress (or she snuck into Fereldan).  Even Anora's adoring father calls her manipulative and Eamon is certainly under the impression that she had Cailin by the nose.  It wouldn't shock me if he had mistresses, but I'm not taking the word of Anora and Loghain for it.

Cailin had a bit of an obsession with glory, but it wasn't unusual for kings to fight at the head of their armies in the middle ages, and given the morale problems they were having, I can easily see a good king trying to inspire his troops in such a way.  I don't know that it was entirely an obsession with glory that had him spending so much time with the troops.  That was part of it, but not all. 

Not saying those two were meeting for secret, clandestine sex, but maybe through their correspondences they came to the conclusion that an alliance via marriage might be a good thing, and their letters became more friendly and such because of that. Of course, that would mean removing Anora(and thus Loghain) from the picture...

And when the King falls, the battle is lost.  But Cailan knew as he looked out over his troops and at the oncoming horde that Ostagar was a battle he would never win. You could see it on his face. Even Duncan saw it. But by that point there was no stopping the battle.

On a side note, might have to wait for a toolset update before doing anything major with awakening mods

edit: never fear, custom bodies is set to come out today or tomorrow, then also there are several zevranny things yet to do in Origins anyways

I don't discount the possibility that an alliance marriage was discussed, but I don't think that scenario is at all clear given the evidence we have in the game.  Eamon's letter at Ostagar is all but begging Cailin to consider leaving Anora and suggests that the issue has created a rift between them.  Cailin might have refused to allay any suspicions that he was planning an alliance marriage, but he just doesn't seem that cunning.  He seemed to have the makings of a decent king.  He was naive and sheltered, but he had the sense to make peace with Orlais and ask for help with the darkspawn horde.  He seemed to genuinely care about the condition of the elves even if he had absolutely no clue what their lives were like.  He was welcoming and friendly no matter how nasty my PC was to him.  He was young, and he relied on the advice of a man he should have been able to trust (Loghain) who was no trustworthy.  He believed in Loghain's strategic skills.  His confidence had been bolstered by early successes.  And yes, he was a bit obsessed with the vision of a valiant young king saving his nation in glorious battle.  His father left some rather large shoes to fill.

To not wander too far from the topic...I really wish one of the devs would explain the rationale behind the approval loss/gain of all the companions at Ostagar.

Hm... Point taken.

Also remember than Loghain's loyalty was to Maric and Fereldan, not Cailan. He was looking at what Cailan was doing at Ostagar as traitorous to the Fereldan he and Maric had helped free. In his eye, leaving the boy to die at the hands of the Darkspawn was his way of trying to save Fereldan once more. All he did was nearly destroy what he loved so much.

Eh, if you rush as fast as you can through it, do no side quests(or maybe only a couple) you can do Orzammar in just about an hour.

Orzammar I have no problem with its the deeproads I dislike for the lack of story outside of Ruck+broodmother+crazy psycho cow

...hmmm maybe Alexander could "acidentatly" get Branka to make anora into a golem for him she does owe me

My brief forray into Awakenings made me appreciate DA:O much more.  Even Wynne looks better.  And my pretty little Cousland looks much better without words across her forehead.  I'm certain that Zev likes her better this way.
