What's the (Romantic) Appeal of Zevran?

With my new character (elf mage) I'm currently on Broken Circle and it's the first time I've had Zevran in the party early enough to take him there. As Wynne is about to destroy her spirit barrier and tells you to be ready because she doesn't know what you might find beyond it, Zevran says, "Do not worry, my dear lady. Our Grey Warden is very able at defending against enemies. I speak from experience." I was pleasantly shocked. Obviously irony is meant, but he says it in a completely admiring tone and not sarcastic or even laughingly at all, and I was also surprised at how respectfully he spoke to Wynne. My PC (who had been wavering between him and Alistair) went pink down to her toes. She is coming off of being berated by Alistair for her handling of Isolde and Connor, so it was nice to get some appreciation.
No need to tell Zevran fans this, but he is the one companion who most openly and sincerely expresses personal appreciation of the PC.

Since dialog tweaks has made a change to the post-tent conversation if done after Zevran is in love, I am holding off this play through to see that. And since it's a human noble who's going to have a political marriage with an unhardened Alistair (more power, MORE POWER), there is very little romance in my poor PC's life. Leliana . . . too crazy. The one time I tried to romance her I ended up so confused, and I really am a woman! Wow, talk about head spinning!

True. RP-wise that was no issue for my character, since she had already told him she wouldn't hold him to any oath and he could leave whenever he wanted, so there's no reason for him to suck up.jenovan wrote...
And some could maybe look at it as him sucking up to the PC (who in theory, holds his fate in his/her hands), but generally, Zevran likes to state bold facts (sometimes too much so for the other NPCs... ;D).

I take it that you do this by refusing him when he initiates? I wasn't sure if the "join me in my tent" dialogue disappears if you do that.ejoslin wrote...

It doesn't as long as you say it's because you're not alone (and if you don't want an approval loss, don't ask him if he's joking . . . though . . . his answer makes it worth the approval loss).
Actually, I've done this before by not romancing him until after the Taliesen encounter. My first play through. That's how I know in the vanilla game it all plays out the same, and is a bit strange as you're practically engaged and he still asks afterwards, "What now?" So I am curious to see the changes she made.

I might do some of those on this run. Come to think of it, I don't know if my previous character (city elf rogue who romanced Zevran) even got the boy coming up to her for the Crows... hmm. Is there something particular that triggers that?Sandtigress wrote...
My City elf rogue decided to take some of the Crow missions in Denerim, so I took Zevran with me. I love how protective he was, warning Ignacio not to try anything. He even risked being taken out by the Crows to make sure that PC wasn't being tricked into anything. And that's just at a medium high level of approval! (Alas, I'm on PS3 so I can't see what the actual rating is, just where along the scale bar I am).

Ooh, I look forward to seeing some of that. XD I was wondering if there'd be any Zevran-specific dialogue there!

From what I understand, you have to talk to Ignacio in the Marketplace.. I offered to "help" him and he said "not right now".. but when you try to leave the Market District through the gate, the boy comes up to you.
I map-teleported out of Denerim by going to camp yesterday, and I missed the boy entirely. D'oh!
Edit: Ninja'd!

OMG I could not believe the hit I took from Alastair when I sacrificed Isolde this time...geeze! and he YELLED, no, SHRIEKED at me...Plus, took hits from Morrigan in Lothering and Redcliff and Leliana in Redcliff, so getting some Zevran love will be a welcome change, since my poor PC is just feeling the hate!

True, last time I had him in Redcliffe for the first time and his comments there were also cute. He approves of your suggestion to set traps ("as long as it actually kills them, otherwise you have... flaming undead" LOL) and has a cute come-back to Berwick when he says he isn't doing anything wrong. Can't remember it exactly but something like "so you thought you would just sit around looking suspicious, good plan." A refreshing change from Morrigan's whining.ejoslin wrote...
I think that's my favorite thing about Zevran, how he has something to add in every area, some more useful than others. Everyone else pretty much keeps their opinion to themselves except under special circumstances; Zevran, however, is not shy to speak up to anyone. It's always the big decision, which area do I do first and NOT have him.

Yes RP-wise this was a rude awakening for my mage PC who had been falling for Alistair (I created her with Zev in mind but I am reading The Calling and kept thinking of Fiona).Rhinna wrote...]

No "hey are you alright, did those demons hurt you?" No "you saved Connor, too bad Isolde had to go" or any understanding that delay would have put ALL of them at risk, including the village. It reminded her of Cullen, who was also supposed to be her friend but would have struck the killing blow had she not made it through her Harrowing. Too bad they don't give you such dialogue options, but I can imagine she and Alistair having a huge shouting match in the middle of camp about how if she hadn't made it back from confronting Connor's demon, he would have done his templar duty and probably not been as upset about it as he was over Isolde. Rawr. BTW if you have high enough Persuade, you can lessen the disapproval hit. I got a -10 for the Persuade option "I honestly tried to do my best." Of course, said under the breath, "... you selfish bastard." LOL

I think, after my third playthough, that between the two, I prefer Zevran. He just seems more mature, and it seems more 'real'. Like I've seen others say, Zevran knows what's he's got and what he's lost (if you break up with him (your approval hit is higher than dumping Alistair), or if you die), versus Alistair who even mentions that maybe the reason he feels the way he does about you is becuase of the situation you're in. I think I'd rather be romanced by a guy that knows a good thing when he sees it, instead of a guy that's romancing you just because you're thrown together in a rather emotionally chraged situation.
I did a playthrough and kept both Alistair and Zev in love at the end of the ultimate sacrifice (unhardened Alistair, Anora as Queen) (initiated the 'pick one of us speeches' with Alistair, and said I loved Zevran, but then did the convo option to tell Alistair I liked him better and I was going to pick him. Then went and talked to Zev, and said I'm sorry, and the flirt convos opened again, and played along. Had Zev back up to 100% love along with Alistair as chosen). That to me was the best ending EVER.
Also interesting to note that when talking to Morrigan, she'll mention both Alistair and Zevran and their feelings for you as reasons why you should convince Alistair to do the ritual.
Another good ending was Alistair hardened in love and king, and Zevran in love, did the ritual. Alistair left kinging to help rebuild the GWs with his beloved, and Zevran stayed with too (Zev said the line that he uses when he's in 'love' at the end instead of the 'friend line).
I also liked when you pick Zev and take him with you to the Archdemon and he says something along the lines of "Good, you're taking me with you, it is as it should be." and then something about not letting you out of his sight.
When Anora said "And some of you even loved her" and the game pans to Zevran and he looks up, I started getting all misty eyed. *sniff* Right then and there I decided, Zev all the way.
And I tried romancing Leliana in the game also, I got scared of her and dumped her. She's a crazy jealous person! Try the threesome in the Pearl to get Duelist, and have her in the party with high approval, the look on her face made me instantly reload and take her out of the party. I would half expect her to try to kill you when you got back to camp.
Can't wait to play a human noble female, make Alistair king, me queen, and keep Zevran.

The author took some liberties, I suppose, but I didn't find them all that farfetched...and the PC character is just funny.
I guess it's just not my cup of tea. Some people love Earl Grey, I don't like it. Orange pekoe FTW.
This is a big part of the reason I don't like fan fiction -- I just see all the characters, especially the PC, so differently. In this particular case, I think it's amusing and well written, but the characters are taken from 3 dimensional to 2 dimensional. The hero and heroine are directly from a romance novel -- Zevran doing bodice ripping? That's when it lost me (though I was already pretty lost at that point). Though since I didn't finish it, maybe it gets better.
it's not like I could do better, though, so I'll keep my thoughts about Zevran to the boards!
I think the author of this one really caught Zev's character very well http://www.fanfictio...t_Come_For_Free, hope the PC is smart enough to choose him in the end though

I did the Foursome with Zevran and Leliena... Leliena is like "oh lets not speak of this again" but Zevran seemed to really enjoy himself
any ways yeah I do agree with you on her though but the good thing about that crazy jealous nutcase that looks to much like Imoen for her own good... I will have zero problems sacrificing my self at the end of my Mage play through who I forced to romance her because unlike Zevran who despite me originally being really disappointed about him being the gay romance option but to my turned out to be among my favorite characters (I hate elves with the exception of Zevran and Viconia) I really dont like Leliena

I enjoy fanfiction but I really have no choice right now since my game has been utterly destroyed by the latest update from bioware and they still have not fixed it. So I read fanfiction in my spare time and I work. Lame... I miss my game.
Did not know it would be so long. Loved it. Duty was a really good read but now I have to sum up the rubric scores on these 9 weeks tests.
Sadly, still no fix on my xbox game.

kinda sleepless tonight, so i started messing around with some dialogue options i missed/didn't pick before.
so after i royally kicked taliesen, i picked "if nobody told them....", which makes him slightly upset (cute
then i told him to leave via the "...or else" option. well, aww, that voice, think that's got to be my favourite nao.
*melts into gooey puddle*
"come on, it's fine! see, i just hit f9, right? please?"
but it's also epic when you let him decide, but i usually pick that one.
*any strange grammar/semantics/overall lunatism in this very post should be blamed on high levels of stress, reacting with significant lack of sleep. we apologise for any inconvenience*

For some reason, this made me laugh so hard. Poor Zevran. No one ever seems to want to ask him to just stay.

Oh, I've done that too -- have you had him dump you yet? Talk about feeling like the worlds biggest heel
Edit: Worst I've done is after asking him if it's a proposal, saying, no, that's too much! Ugh! I just wish arguments with my husband was as easy as a quick reload!
