I recommend Avast-it's slow, but it's damned good at what it does. I know people that work for the US government that swear by it. But yes, it can be a bit bulky and slow.

The problem with alot of people is that they think antivirus will protect them from malware/trojans. That is not often the case. Im glad that you were able to download and run it right away. I usually recommend doing a quick scan first to skim the tops off, then a full system. But full system straight off the bat works too.

Some of the more pernicious malware can make your life a living heck.

This is why my brother has a fit any time Dad says something strange popped up on him while he's surfing the net... Usually ends up with Brother needing to wipe the HD to clear the damned thing.

Best bet is to have Malwarebytes or Superanti already installed and set to update regularly. Should save him some time. ;)

thanks so far I have 23 files quarantined and it's only 23% done :(
I thought I had adequate protection use chrome. need better software I guess

It depends how the viruses installed themselves, sometime's even with all the protection you can get they still get through.

My brothers friend recommended him some movie streaming site, so he went on there and watched a film about 10 mintues or so after it was finished the system locked completely then everytime it tried to load into windows it would just reboot. Got it into safe mode and ran a virus scan and it found over 100 viruses (I had ran a scan earlier that day and the system was clean).

YES! Sami Jo I did get that, and it's sitting in my taskbar now. I knew it was fake but you couldn't click it off. Hopefully I will be able to get rid of it... scanning takes FOR EVER. Luckily I am off tomorrow so I can babysit the machine and get the new protection software installed....

Thank god for Safeboot and for having another machine to search for information. and for you guys for giving me more Zev squee while I wait

Yes, the spoof antivirus ones are the worst-mainly because they fool so many people with their realism. That and they just get really gummy in terms of what they block. Im surprised you were able to download and run mbam-my experiences with it were all negative with that-but you did catch it right away, which is the best thing of all.

WOOT kneepads for the win. Why cant ZEV get the shorter skirt instead of my dorf..

anyway I'm running MacAfee which is what I had on the machine, and it's identified 23 so far with 33% done.

The net has a LOT of info on that fake antivirus trojan. Mine is called "Antivirus lus" and it's insidious apparnetly. In fact, I checked my programs list and it's there and there is also a "uninstall" program there, which of course I did NOT use because it would have put even more malware on my machine...

once I get the McAfee done I have Spybot Search and Destroy on the machine (which frankly I don't run enough) and maybe should do that too, but I will download your suggestions as well... sigh,,,

It is a really nasty one and it was shutting down everything that might catch it.  My husband ended up having to go into regedit to get all the entries.  Google's Sypware doctor with antivirus is suppose to catch it if you can get it to install.  I can get the site he used for the instructions to get rid of it if you'd like.

I dunno, Surreal - the artist who made them didn't say what her inspiration was.
I just made the first morph and she expanded on the morph for the others.

But now that you mention it, he kinda does...

edit: i knew i could count on you, Jenovan -- our patient should be fine now :D

Had to play that twice, because when I take a screenie my whole game pauses a second, and I miss something. But heh, double the time, double the play, no play at all is just too sad a way.

Yeah, it's rough having to replay the pre-tent kiss scenes over for the good screenies....

AVG was good a few years ago, but it's slacked off recently. Avast and Avira AntiVir are better free virus scanners currently. (I use AntiVir, it has some of the best detection rates but also some false positives, which I think are better than missing something!)

Good luck! Probably the web site got hacked and it wasn't their fault (besides maybe having sloppy security).
