When I first got DA:O, one of the things I was most excited about was romancing Zevran. I didn't know much about the game or Zevran at all (I was remaining spoiler-free until after my first play-through). It wasn't what I was expecting though. Ever after my first playthrough, I have had a hard time ever romancing Zevran again. I just can't do it. To me it just seems that he is trying to seduce the Warden so that she (or he, but I have never romanced him as a guy character so I can't comment on that romance) will keep him close. When he calls me beautiful, it just rings false to my ears. I know he has called every other woman that he wants to use the same thing. I keep thinking back to how I met him with that apostate wrapped around his finger, obviously kept close because she was powerful. I'm not any different to him.
I know at the very end he really does love me and I can tell, but I just can't get to that point anymore, because everything leading up to it feels like he is using me...even the sex. I remember that in my very first play-through one time I went to him and he was like, "Work, work, work..." I know it is supposed to be funny, but my character didn't find it funny at all. So having sex with her was work, huh? And I still have a hard time with all of the people he used then killed, even if he didn't have a choice in it...it still bothers me.
I want to like Zevran romantically, but I just can't get past that feeling of being lied to and used.
I got quite a different feeling from him first time. What really struck me was that he seemed to be the only companion who was really caring about how my character felt, rather than himself. He doesn't ask you to go on any quests for him. He doesn't even need any gifts at all. (My first character still had his gifts in her bag, because she didn't know how things would play out and kept them in case his approval went down. They were never needed).
I agree that his flirty lines are bad, but I found that funny and charming. 'Work, work, work' came across as the opposite to me - the PC had asked him to have sex, and he's pretending it's a boring duty when it's so obviously not (his approval goes up every time you have sex). It's a bit of a dismal job, being a Grey Warden, and he tries to cheer you up and make you laugh. When he recites poetry it's not to seduce you, but because he's seen that you look unhappy and wants to make you happier.
I don't think he really used people for sex before killing them. I think sex was one of the few really good things in his life, and one way he could connect to people for a short time. He also seems to be giving and sex is one of the things (about the only thing) that he can give. I don't get the impression that he would want to have sex with somebody who didn't want to have sex with him. I didn't feel that he was trying to seduce my wardens for his own safety. I think it's genuinely about shared pleasure - he's attracted to you, and he wants to do something for you.
I felt less used by him than the other companions. He's the most selfless, and the most focused on the warden, I think.
ETA: and that seemed apparent to my first character from the beginning, but I can see how possibly a different character might see his actions differently though. By the end, though, I think it's clear that he's been falling in love since the first tent time.
