What's the (Romantic) Appeal of Zevran?

I have to admit on my very first playthrough, Zevran WAS my 2nd choice - Alistair broke up with my City Elf, and when I clicked on Zev, he offered the earring, and my PC thought 'Take that, Alistair!!!' However, after I've learned how much deeper and more commited Zevran's romance is, I actually reloaded to my earliest save, dumped Alistair myself, and was with Zevran since ;D
And God do I hate all the OOC fanfics!!
that is actually the way it happened to a lot of people, myself included.
I'm not raging. However, there is really no fanfic out there that really shows any insight into the character at all. Present company excepted. I actually like fanfic by the people who do have insight into the character.
Thanks Jenovan. I don't know what to say about that. I am actually speechless. I thought it meant something in the way of 'roughed up', which I couldn't really wrap my brain around. But drugged up for sexaul assault? Zevran?

I agree. All the characters have deeper levels, and if you want to publish something, the writer should at least have done the tiniest bit of research. <_<
It has nothing to do with obsession, but with a character being pulled utterly out of.... er, character, and being treated shabbily to top it off nicely.
Excuse my emoticon obsession tonight. I don't know what's wrong with me

I've read this thread - http://social.biowar...index/2069443/3, and it made me wonder how would Zevran react to the warden's Calling. Do you think he'd go with her/him to the Deep roads to meet death together?
Absolutely not. Zevran is first and foremost all about his own survival. He even watched and enjoyed as his best friend slit the throat of the last woman to love him because he allowed himself to be manipulated by The Crows. He may travel there with his love until he/she dies but he would never sacrifice himself. He may have travelled to Ferelden with a deathwish, but after The Arch Demon is defeated he has regained his appreciation for life.

I can certainly see him doing that... unless he's found something else to live for in the meantime. (Children? They'd probably be grown by that point...) I think that would come down to the nature of his relationship with the individual Warden, though...Inzhuna wrote...

Heh, I disagree with you entirely. Do the romance, if you haven't, because he ends up completely about the warden after he falls in love.
Edit: He doesn't commit suicide if the warden does the US, but if the warden DOES die when Zevran is in love, he does not love life any more. He keeps everyone at a distance; no one ever gets close to him again.
Second edit: WARNING: ENDGAME SPOILER! US EPILOGUE TEXT
Zevran lingered in Denerim for a time, mourning the loss of his love and working for the Fereldan throne as a distraction. Eventually the Crows came after him once again and he elected to take the fight to their doorstep, returning to Antiva. After four master assassins disappeared, the Crows readmitted Zevran--as their leader. He maintained a distance from his former comrades even then, and despite frequent offers of new bedmates, never loved again.
This is not someone who is embracing and enjoying life after the warden dies. I do agree that he's a survivor, however.

Of course! I actually know fanfic writers who have gone mainstream and "professional," so it's not just kiddies playing with someone else's toys. Of course that's what it is is 99.8% of the time, but! I digress.
It's good writing practise, you see. (Not that I have an desire to be a professional writer, it's mostly a "well there's bugger all on TV then" thing for me) Esseontially, it's writing with training wheels. You already have an audience, a universe and such, but there's also tonnes of leeway to be creative.
I must say Dragon Age offers more in regards to fanfic, as the Origins means you can really stamp out a character that is unique and engaging... Or, you know... Write Bann Teagan/Zevran slash. Either/or.

I actually kind of agree with you but for different reasons. I would be horrified if I were to be terminally ill and find out my husband intended to kill himself when I died. I think the question is whether Zevran finds something else to live for besides the Warden. If you die fighting the Archdemon, no, he hasn't found anything else, and ends up living an empty life (although he does not kill himself). I'd hope by the time a couple decades have passed he would have additional reasons to live.Wozza78 wrote...

Killing yourself for no reason does not equal love in my book. That's Bella/Edward "love".

I think it's important to try to get things right because you are playing with someone else's toys, so it's a matter of respect. Additionally, your audience is people who are interested in that particular universe, so they probably also are interested in reading a well-written story that's true to the setting. Or in reading Harry/Draco slash. . . YMMV.soignee wrote...

But thats what Zev is. What I'm getting alot of in this post is that it's ok to be lewd, lecherous, and thoroughly selfish if you have pointy ears or are generally good looking. Does Zev actually have any redeeming qualities? His oath of loyalty aint worth the paper it's written on, and he flirts just as shamelessly with Liliana and Alistair as the main PC. He's the guy that drives men and women into the arms of those they are actually meant to be with.
Well, for one thing, he's the opposite of selfish. He is the only character who doesn't ask you to do a personal quest, and didn't need any gifts for approval. He deeply regrets Rinna, but if you put together everything he tells you it becomes obvious how he could have acted like that. His life changes completely after meeting the warden, he is the most giving of all the companions, I think, he falls in love the most easily (although he doesn't know it), and he says he will be with you till death. There's no other agenda with him.
Flirting, so what? I don't see why that's a problem. He doesn't sleep with anybody else, whether you mind or not.

Zevran is also the only one who is concerned about the Warden's feelings and health, btw.

Other people's toys should be looked after well and handed back. What usually starts arguments on the interbutts is everyone's barometer of this, as this thread is proving.
Leliana is tough to write, I think. In my fic I've only set the focus on three people- Zevran, Morrigan and Alistair... The rest are background. I use Leliana either when I want her to say something morally sanctimonious as a contrast, or to be annoying and sing. In my last chapter I had her injured so the party could have an excuse to camp. Lulz. I'm trying not to disrespect her, but tbh she's used mainly as a background-y foil to Zevran/Missa (my Brosca in the story) morality and outlook.
Oh god i am talking about fanfic again, I am srsbzns about it indeed! SRSBZN.
