Because I still can't find my way around the toolset, I played that little bit again. I couldn't get him to lose approval no matter how many times I asked him to the tent, and he never yelled at me for asking. I played about with his approval by using a feast onion, but still no approval loss.
I didn't say that Zevran gives an approval loss, only that he yells at you. I'm looking at it more from a story perspective. To me, his yelling (and Morrigan's, which is pretty harsh as well) feels pretty hurtful. Of course, your PC could see through it and understand a bit of what's going on, but if I chose to see it as negatively as you seem to want to interpret Ali's refusal, you could say that your PC and Zevran just had a deep discussion about your friendship and are closer than you've ever been, but suddenly he's telling you that you shouldn't be focusing on him and he doesn't even want to talk to you about why. It's a big WTF moment. Or that's how I see it.
I thought somebody mentioned a Zevran approval loss, but maybe it was just me going on about Alistair's approval loss! It was the approval loss that really got me wound up.
But it's funny how people have different reactions. I had a strong emotional reaction in both cases - I know it's just game mechanics, but I still feel it! I didn't
want to interpret Alistair's refusal badly - at that time I thought my character had a bond with him. But it certainly felt bad, and it's difficult to see the character in the same light again.
With Zevran, I just didn't feel that way at all when he refused. It doesn't come across as yelling to me when he refuses if you keep asking.. ('No, no ....). His voice is soft. And then there's all the history there - you know how devoted he is. And he doesn't continue to refuse, if you say he seems different - he will explain and will stop refusing. And apologise. It just feels so different to me.
I find it difficult to play through a new game without having the old ones in the back of my mind. One day I'll try to play through avoiding that conversation with Alistair. But it's difficult - that and Loghain. The Coonnor thing hasn't come for me, because I've always used the mages, so it doesn't bother me.
