What's the (Romantic) Appeal of Zevran?

You can ask him to the tent again once you have him back at 100 love, it's safe then.

But it's been bugging me so much lately: how old is he?! I always imagined ~30, but it seems like for RPing's sake we should know exactly, right?

Hadn't thought of going back to camp and checking it out, so I reloaded from a previous point and played through to get back to 88 Love. Went back to camp. Asked him to tent, he said yes, got 1 approval, and then he was at 89 Adore.

I've never quite understood the on/off switches in Zev's relationship. It's so easy to knock him in and out of love- I wonder if it's just buggy, or if they partly intended it that way... In a lot of ways it fits well with his character: for example, he'll give the proposition spiel but it's more about protecting the feelings of the other person than about him being hurt. It's obvious that his feelings never go away, and he seems like someone who could be understanding enough to accept the Warden back regardless of previous offences. Ah well, bugs or no, I'm happy he's as forgiving as he is!
But it's been bugging me so much lately: how old is he?! I always imagined ~30, but it seems like for RPing's sake we should know exactly, right?
There are scenes where he looks young and vulnerable (awwww moments)
I do think he's late 20's, beginning 30's as well, and the weathered look is from the live he was forced into leading.

Oh god I get all giggly when his boyish side comes out. There are times where he rivals Alistair in goofy youthfulness, which is saying something! And I definitely agree about the weathered look- it's a sign of the hardships he's faced that make him seem older than he really is. Maybe that's part of why I don't like a lot of the modded Zevs- they lose the subtle lines around his eyes that were always the first sign to my characters that his smile is partly just for show, and that he's really been through a lot of tough times.

With Zevran? It's the accent. Damn.

*sigh* And I’m sure that within a couple of weeks she’ll call me just for telling me how right I was. And squee for hours. That’s what happens when you spend your adolescence sharing novels with someone.

I do the same. I do try out the mods, but I end up flipping back to the default one. The lines and the look of hardship is an integral part of Zevran in my opinion.
Same goes for Alistair. I try the mods, but I go back to the default there as well. There he looks like his character-behavior plays out, in my opinion. A basically sweet, very young and inexperienced man, who was denied the experience of any kind of parental bonding, and is therefore searching for a role model, someone he can look up to. Being a prisoner of his heritage, one way or the other, he is full of self-doubt, and lacks self esteem, and the default shows that best, imo.

The love thing is definitely a glitch -- it doesn't change anything so for all purposes it's adore. But it's an extremely fun glitch. Every time it happens, I take screen shots (sad, I know). It also will do it at lower levels -- show Adore below 70, show care below 50. Maybe it just indicates that Zevran's feelings are far deeper than he lets on! It does take the guy being finally given his freedom and being forced to make a choice whether to go or stay (killing Taliesen) before he finally can admit it!

Also thinking mid 20s~30 here, he has to have lived long enough to experience so very many things, but those moments do come across that show he's not so very old..
(Personally I tried to integrate a little bit of wear and tear into my mod, but it's difficult to make subtle! I nixed it for now, but it's one of the things I mean to go back and play with at some point. I think it does add a lot to the character in those closeup dialogue moments.)

A question about the epilogues: have you ever chose something besides "rebuilding the Gray Wardens"? If so, what do you think of the "for a time" sentence? Could it be that, given the little of story we know from Awakening, it only means that you'll travel/be with your clan/stay in Denerim *for a time*, before going back to Amaranthine to rebuild the Wardens?
I have always taken it (may be the fan girl in me) that he leaves Denerim when the Warden does, as in the Warden's slide s/he only stays around for a time as well. The traveling, it depends if I picked that I wanted him to stay with my warden, or if he could go as long as he returned. I don't see them breaking up, no matter what though. There may be circumstances where they have to separate, but I don't see that separation as permanent. The thing is, I think Zevran is safe from the Crows only if they're rebuilding the Grey Wardens -- if they're doing anything else, it's possible someone else would pick up the contract.

Haha, I can't bare to do anything but rebuild the Grey Wardens now. My first HN who romanced him ended up staying in Denerim because that was more in his character, and the "for a time" line really threw me. I know some people take it as you both leave together, but for me it sounded like a break up. So now I'm in the process of doing another HN who will rebuild the Grey Wardens and thus Zev never leaves. *cue evil laugh*

Huh, I never took it as a breakup. Call me crazy, but I can't see him calling it off so quickly after going through all that just to fall in love in the first place. My character chose to go traveling with him, and I saw it only as meaning they traveled for awhile, but they'd have to come back eventually. The temporary part is the traveling, not the relationship.

Agreed. The fact that his scars and wrinkles end up looking like smile lines... well, I imagine some of them are smile lines... says a lot about the character. That's what I think he and my current elf mage have going mostly. She is a little girl inside, very fragile, but so fun-loving and mischievous that I imagine they laugh a lot.Sabriana wrote...

Upthread people were talking about how Zevran's tactics are set to attack whatever is attacking the PC. I had a stellar example of that last night playing in the Urn of Sacred Ashes temple. A reaver was attacking my mage. She had the guy's health down quite a bit and he was the last enemy around, but as he turned on my PC, Zevran of course did his "run to save her" routine. He got there just in time to get the beheading graphic, and then the combat music ended. It looked so cool! The reaver was pulling back to hit my mage with an axe, suddenly Zevran is there, the guy's head is gone in a fountain of blood, and Zevran just looks at my PC and sheathes his dagger. Oh, for a kissing mod at moments like that. Ha!

@ Andrea
I never took it as them parting. Even in my first playthrough were I had no input from anywhere or anybody, did I read it as: They both stayed there for a time before moving on - together.

I broght this up because I know that many people were put off by the sentence, but, given what we know about Awakening (which actually involves rebuilding the Wardens), I too am interpreting it like: they go elsewhere for a time... *before going back to rebuild the Warden*
Well, I certainly hope this is the case and that the epilogue was just worded poorly. I guess we'll find out in March!

All I know is, Zevran had better at least make a brief appearance in Awakening. I would even be happy with a line of text saying, "And Zevran was off doing some mission for you and sends you his love!"
Because I will be very sad if he randomly breaks up with your character or dies because they can't get the voice actor or don't feel like implementing the romance. Because him dying would be very sad and randomly breaking up with your character would be really annoying and out of character. T__T
I guess I'm just paranoid about it because of Mask of the Betrayer...*sighs* Which I know wasn't even a Bioware game, but still.
Anyway, if any of this happens, I will just start up a new Orlesian Grey Warden and have her romance one of the new characters! ^__^ So it'll all be good!

i'm still hoping, since the german preview page sounds pretty much like you get to choose. it's certainly just badly translated, but it keeps my spirits high=]ejoslin wrote...
I don't think Zevran will be the returning companion. Though part of me of course hopes he is since there are at least two endings where he's rebuilding the grey wardens! I would be reasonably happy if he has a cameo appearance and that the romance is at least acknowledged in a positive way. He fell too hard to think it could ever end, especially within just a few months!
