This is not exactly true... The individuals who can interbreed must be able to meet each other in the outside world. There are more than 10 000 species of orchids, all of them can interbreed and have fertile offspring but they are different species -> orched from South-America would never 'meet' a orchid from Indonesia, so they are different species.

I use mine definition as to not be to confused at the subject. You can have fertile offspring - Race or breed. You can't - Species. By that same definition (not being able to meet), humans wouldn't have been the same species in different parts of the world until intercontinental travel was made possible. Would the orchids become the same species if they invented boats for instance?

Biologist here.  Interbreeding is possible between closely related species and actually quite common among many reptile and plant species.  Breeding success is typically much lower. Hybrid offspring may or may not be viable, and may or may not be indistinguishable physically from one of the parents.  It varies based on the pairing.  There is a place where Gaider confirmed that they are different species.  Interbreeding between each of the races is possible but very rare (in keeping with the hybrid part.)  Human-elf pairings give an offspring that looks human (elves didn't quicken by interbreeding.  It was something about the actual contact with human culture, which is their explanation for why the Dalish have longer life spans on average than city elves.)  Human-dwarf pairing create half dwarves which are perishingly rare as dwarves have incredibly low reproductive rates to begin with.  Elf-dwarf pairs are even more rare and the offspring would be tall dwarves.  In biological terms: human features are dominant to elven features, human and dwarven features are codominant, and dwarven features are incompletely dominant to elven features. 

And if I am way too late with this, my apologies.  I can't fins where Gaider wrote about this, but he did address it in a thread about offspring between the LI and the Warden.

There aren't any scientists who would argue it.

Humans are definitely all the same species genetically.  We have one of the lowest genetic diversities of any species on the planet.  There is more diversity within the chimpanzees than there is between humans and chimps.  I have seen arguments that there are social/behavioral differences that should qualify some ethnic groups as separate species because they refuse to interact with anyone outside their group, but from a biological perspective it is more a step on the way to becoming a new species if they kept it up for a million years or so.

Hehe. My lab coats are all heavily decorated.  Every time I get a new one, my lab decorates it.  The current one looks like a pre-school class with markers went wild on it.  And if you saw my pic, you would have noticed my glasses perched on top of my head, where they usually are unless I am trying to read something.  Sorry, though, no pencil hairdos.  My hair is too fine for it to work.  When it is long, it is usually in a braid.  When it is shorter, I use my glasses as a headband.

Well, in the same post, Gaider did say that none of them were biologists and that the explanations came after the lore, so magic works too.
