Well it's not a set-in-stone rule of thumb, obviously... but the degree of difference in the game models still trips me out pretty bad. XD After watching one of my roommates tear the other one a new #@$hole over that in comic art, it really stands out to me now, haha.
It may be your friends nerdraging over something not matching their preconception have skewed your judgement, though -- the actual placement/width of shoulders on the characters isn't really very much off in comparison to these Xena pics, for example. It probably creates much worse impression because the limbs on the models are extremely scrawny, and the default pose has them unnaturaly angled away from the body, much more than how people normally keep their arms.
But google pictures of females who actually do work out to similar degree a DA character would -- some fitness pictures e.g. and you may be surprised how few of them follow your friends' stereotype.
Okay, guys, since I'm obviously incapable of articulating anything well, I'll go to pictures:

Worksafe to click, I bloopered all the rated bits. I had a hard time getting pics of chicks just standing straight and upright, so I had to account for hip-cant and some side-shot in a few of them. Also, couldn't find a good straight standing shot of Morrigan and can't open my game right now.
Spent way too much time on it as it is for a stupid point.
This is my roommate, so it's not just nerdrage when she tells the pencilist to bring in the shoulders.
When
I do it, it's nerdrage. When my roommate does it, it's a paycheck. XD
Which is why I'm not really wanting to get into another four page long debate over semantics / "what I meant was... yes well... WHO DID I OFFEND NOW? oh god internet" again.

So,
your mileage may vary, not all chicks are built the same, etc etc etc. I'm not getting into it.
BUT THAT UP THERE IS WHAT I MEANT. NOT HIPBONES = SHOULDERS. OR WHATEVER. lol.
Ffsdrfsd, I should be writing. Not playing with google and making my browser crash. Again.
