Shipping: Pairing Characters from Books/Movies/Shows regardless of cannon

Shipping Wars:

Prime Example Harry Potter: People were convinced Harry and Hermione would end up together, despite the glaringly obvious evidence to the contrary. So they wrote fics about the pairing and only supported that pairing. However others were convinced that Harry and Ginny would end up together, even though Harry was macking on Cco at the time. Thus they wrote fics and only supported that pairing.

Bringing the opposing factions against each other in war often came when someone made a "THIS IS WHY HARRY/HERMIONE is CANNON. " Or Ginny/Harry. Thus each shipping faction came out of the woodworks to debate, flame and insult each other that their pairing was TRUE and they KNOW it.

Here's the wiki entry for shipping btw: Here

Edit: Top of the Page, So I give you Morrigan Flame Blasting Wynne:devil:

Without making the connection to 'relationship', talking about "shipping" people actually sounded derogatory to me.  Not sure why.

edit:  Flaming Wynne = Full of Win!

LOL well it sort of is. It usually implies going beyond the point of actually caring about the characters themselves to the extent of simply caring that you are proved correct about your predictions. It becomes a very hostile thing.

And Trip, thanks for making me not the only one to use the HP example. XD

*delurks again* I also thought shipping involved boats but it might have something to do with my rather limited english... word-thingy. When did this thread get so cute? I’m very much for online romances though since I met my boyfriend while discussing Terry Pratchett in some forum five years ago.

Hey I was there on that massive HP fan board that JKR herself would always mention, I saw the wars and laughed my ass off regularly. I forgot the name of it but man I only went there because they had the best source of fic recs with summaries.

edit to remove embarrassing redundancy.

I hadn't heard of it either. Is it short for 'relationshipping'?

Somebody has voted to eat Zevran on Dragon Age Survivor. And Loghain has more votes than Wynne. Please vote to eat Wynne!

lol - what?  Image IPB  Where is this?  You mean there's a thread worth looking at other than this one?

Hurry!  Zevran is catching up with Wynne!  Dog has already been eaten.

Yes, a little.  It's usually based on subtext and defended in vitriolic fashion.

Ex.: Shipping me with Aro.  Clearly, there's some connection, but romance?  Maybe we'll beat people up together and take their lunch money, but romance?  I expected a different one, honestly, and I couldn't have defended myself against it.  Aro I can deal with.

I actually am a shipper in several fandoms. *meek* Although I am the moderate and facepalming kind, you must believe me! There is nothing more annoying than shipwars...particularly the popular ones. Brings out the most idiotic things in people, it does, even though you also see good meta...

A lot of fandoms nowadays use 'shipping' as simply 'I prefer these pairings kay', but I understand there are still people to whom it still means 'OMG OTP 4EVA ANYTHING ELSE IS WRONG'. Plenty of them. Which makes the rest of us collectively facepalm. (OTP = One True Pairing, by the way.)

I voted Wynne, and it saddens me to see Dog eaten. He can help you hunt with his superior sense of smell, dammit, do people have no survival sense these days? Zev is great for island survival. The most useless one would be Wynne, and why is she still alive?

I'm ok with shipping on a humorous predictions kind of level, but when people continue to defend pairings with their life after they've already been proven wrong, then it gets beyond the point of strange.

Which is why I can't read a lot of Firefly fanfic anymore because they always pair Jayne with River...*facepalms* I wouldn't even do that to Jayne.

Yes, he's another one of my favourite authors and that’s part of the reason for the name but it also happens to mean "defeated" in Turkish which I thought was funny in a game forum.

Done!  Image IPB  Though I'd need to be starving to think of eating Wynne Image IPB.  The lengths I'd go to save Zevran.

It pretty much gets to almost fanatical religious heights , they believe it so it HAS to be true. I general step away from those people and let them stew in their own madness^_^.

It was actually more or less random.  :P  Not supposed to be taken seriously!

I think it might be bad manners to suggest anyone with much potential compatibility, yes?  :pinched:

JOWAN/F!AMELL FOR LIIIIIIFE. I will defend this pairing to my grave because I am a merciless, angsty fangirl in a merciless, angsty fandom.

Rrrrarrrghhhlguglgughrhruglug.

seriously people who are so diehard about things that are usually not real are either very very passionate, or very very scary.  Or both.
