Let me just start by saying, i love the fact that DA3 will use Frostbite and i can't wait to see the results, and obviously all judgement reserved until some footage/screenshots surface.

I was just wondering, is anyone a little apprehensive about the frostbite engines reputation for producing "real world" graphics in DA's fantasy setting?

Obviously there are some areas of the game that need a little work (lighting, shadows, magic effects etc.) but Dragon Age (in my eyes at least) has a very specific art style and i'd be a little concerned if it were to lose it, what are your thoughts?

DA2 is a bit too cartonnish for me. If I want artistic style games, I would go with Final Fantasy. The realism that the engine provide would allow me to immerse more into the game. I think a lot of Japanese are more about abstract and artstyle while Western games are more leaning toward realism in many of their games. I love both, but if I have to choose, I would prefer the realism for Dragon Age. I think we can depict mature contents like gore better with Frostbite engine.

Naw, I'm sure it will be fine.

So far we've only really seen what the Frostbite 2 engine can do with games like Battlefield 3 and Need for Speed etc. No doubt they can make the game look more cartoony/realistic/whatever depending on the type of aesthetic style they're aiming for with DA3.

Nope. The art style and graphics aren't restrained so much by the engine that this should be anything to worry about.

Well, Dragon Age actually has *two* art styles at the moment. It'll be interested to see which aspects of each are carried over into, or changed for, DA3.

DA2 was a bit too cartoonish for me as well.  I don't think photo-realism is the way to go for the series (after all there is still magic and dragons), but I definitely think the content demands a more realistic look than the DA2 look.  There are a lot of real-life politics and real-life parallel social issues that the Dragon Age deals with.  A lot of gritty, very un-fantasy things such as rape, murder, racial discrimination/prejudice, religious issues, sovereign nations with complex political dynamics within and between them.  I think the graphics should reflect this.

I personally didn't have to much of a problem with the art style for DA2, but then again I didn't have much of a problem with the original either. I agree however that the art style should reflect issues that Biotic Sage brought up and am excited to see what it can do with racial proportions. The elves were a bit to skinny at times in DA2 and unless they had extra work done on them i.e with Merrill, Fenris and Orsino they sort of fell flat. In DA3 I believe that they should be lean, but keep the general facial structure. Dwarves were fine and I really had no issue with the Qunari.

I think with this engine Bioware will be able to make huge self contained areas so that we keep the travel system DA has always had but make each area vast and much more explorable.

"Cartoonish" or "photorealistic" characters aren't dictated by the engine. That's entirely the work of the artists making the character models and textures. The engine just adds all the lighting and effects like film grain, depth of field blur, etc. as far as the visual presentation is concerned.

Not at all.

Art style is based on art resources, not engine.

i didn't actually see the difference in the two games. I just thought Kirkwall was a very bright and clean (sorta) place.

Realistic artstyle for me, please.
