Maric, as he got older, did want to be king. More importantly, he wanted to be a good king and he really came to enjoy governing. At least, that is how it is portrayed at the end of The Calling. Cailan did want to be king, but he wanted the glory part of it more. Hardened Alistair also wants to be king, and he wants to be a good king. I see him as a truer son to Maric in this regard, leaving out the obvious personality similarities. In the end, the one of the last three kings I see to be 'meh' is Cailan. I do believe he cared about Ferelden, just not the way Maric and Alistair do.

I haven't read The Calling yet. Just started the Stolen Throne.

Except you will break Alistair's little heart! :( Just think of how much better a king Alistair will be with the woman he loves as his wife right by his side.

Ahh...yes. You do have a point. Damn. :) There goes that. Though I do have the intention of sacrificing my *first* elven mage, despite Alistair's heart. :( I like the idea that "Hero of Ferelden" who sacrificed herself to stop the Blight and save Ferelden is both an *elf* and a *mage*. Two things "reviled" by the people, as she says in the Mage origin when talking to...Eadric...I think is his name. I just think it seems fitting that maybe people and the Chantry should be like...wow, we should give these people a little more respect. :) Could be just wishful thinking, however, as I'm sure your sacrifice will fade from people's minds eventually.

The sacrifice certainly faded from the developpers' minds, that's for sure.

(ok I know it's not completely fair).

Yeah, the conversation goes kind of like this:

AL: Having an heir...might not be possible.
PC: (4 responses) 1) Also not necessary 2) Not your heir 3) It won't be for lack of trying! (which I always choose) and 4) Don't need to worry about that now.

Alistair has responses to each one, but I don't know them off the top of my head. Does anyone know where in the toolset this conversation is found?

Hmmmm, when I go that route, I get 3) That thought deserves an awkward pause.  I always pick 2, though.

It really does seem to a happily ever after, one that seems more likely to end up producing an heir. :P

Edit: Yes, many times.

Edit:  Or, your choice instead of 'lack of trying' is 'deserves awkward pause'?  Are you in love with him or is it a politcal match?

I always get 'Excellent point.  Good thing we got started when we did, hm?' as a response for the lack of trying line.

No, I don't get the choice, "It won't be for lack of trying." I get "That thought deserves and awkward pause."

It's a political match!  That's why I answer, "Not YOUR heir."  Soon afterwards, Zevran has a serious talk with the future Queen -- so it's a good thing he loves a royal scandal:wub:

Edit: To get back on topic, my queen really does hope that Ali enjoys losing his virginity to Morrigan, but it feels pretty bad because he hates her so much :crying:

Yeah, I figured out what you mean after.

Just for lols, in my very first playthrough, I somehow got Zevran to love me, got his earring, never slept with him, and was very, very confused by his dialogue after the Landsmeet. I ended the game with both Alistair and Zevran in love with me and 100 approval.

Hah, that's all good until you have to choose.  Zevran's romance is set up as such that you can't actually finish it like that.  It's better if you turn down the earring, get him to declare his feelings, and end up engaged!   But even if you don't end up engaged, when he declares his feelings... SO sweet!

If you still have your old save, you should dump Ali and ask Zev to the tent at least once (it may end up not being what you expect when you do) just to hear it.  The voice acting is amazing!

But I did finish it like that. I wish to hell I still had that save or I'd post screenies. When I had the conversation with Zevran, I apologized (b/c I didn't know what else to do), he said it was cool. Gave me the 'you know who to call if he proves a poor husband' and that was it. Both said love, both said 100, I had the rose and earring, and had never slept with Zevran. Perhaps it was a glitch, but, boy was I ever confused.

I have play throughs where I romanced Zevran.  He always gets my elves, b/c I cannot stand the height differences between human females and him.  It's cool with the guys, though.

That's not the ending of the romance ^_^  When you get him telling you things like (SPOILER), "Everything I have been taught says what I feel is wrong, yet I cannot help it." THEN you are where he's declaring his feelings.  He asks for a commitment about the future, but whether or not you can ask him if he's proposing depends on other things.

The royal scandal speech, well, what you saw was the non-sex variant where he doesn't actually say he loves a royal scandal -- you broke up with him, actually to get THAT response!~  And he was fine with it!  He understands a political marriage.

To complete the romance, you have to ask him to the tent at least once.  Then ask him what has changed.  I think a lot of people end up not liking the Zevran romance because they don't end up seeing the very end

That and he was giving the FRIENDSHIP dialog at the gates to his lover :crying:

Except there were no other possible dialogue options for him at that point. So perhaps it was a glitch? All I know is what the affection ratings/approvals were.

And I like getting the earring conversation and turning it down, so that I can get it again after and ask if it's a proposal. I actually felt kind of bad about that until read the VO direction in the toolset saying that the 'Only if you wish it to be' should be delivered in a hopeful tone. It doesn't *quite* come across like that in the game, imo.

And, to reiterate, I hope Alistair didn't enjoy it too much with my NHF playthrough, but I hope he did with the games where I romance Zevran.

Waitttt, so with the "Not your heir" response, you're basically saying that you would cheat on him?

Jesus, harsh. What's his response to that?

I'm telling you, if you couldn't ask him to the tent, the romance was over, despite what the bar said.  You HAVE to ask him to the tent to complete his romance.  What you just said was the breakup choice and his response when you agree to marry Alistair and tell him that you're sorry.

He was not at love after that.  Sometimes the status bars get glitched.  But that dialog there breaks off the romance and makes it impossible to restart.

I know how the romance goes and that the tent completes it. If the status bars get glitched then that explains it. I just know what it said. It was also my very first play through, so it confused the hell out of me. I do believe you about the glitch. *looks up to where she mentioned it* :P

*grin* I edited out my edit too late!

But yeh, if Zevran questions the warden about their upcoming marriage, if they end it, it's impossible to restart it.  It's why you didn't have any more conversation options.

Edit: I really was responding to your first post where you had said you HAD finished the romance like that, but I think we were talking at cross purposes.  When I say a romance is finished, I mean completed, not over.

Since I do the political marriage, sometimes with sex beforehand, sometimes without, my warden just tells him, "There's no reason it has to end."  That breakup to me is completely heartbreaking.  He's so sweet about it, and he just wants to reassure the warden, though you can tell his heart is breaking :crying:

I'm curious, how is that cheating?  It's a political marriage!  She and Alistair are not in a romance, and Alistair certainly knows about the relationship with Zevran.  If anyone is being betrayed in that circumstance, it's Zevran.  Even Alistair will talk about how strange the thought of being married to his friend (or neutral) warden is!

Of course, if you tell him, "not your heir" when in a relationship with him, he gets a LOT more upset about that!

Edit: I see it as no more harsh than Alistair staying with his mistress when marrying Anora.  In fact, less so!

Second edit: If you're not in a romance with him he says something like, "Should I be glad to hear that? I guess I should."  He's grumpy, -5 approval -- so it's not as serious to him as dissing Duncan.  However, if he's in a romance with you, he says something like, "Now THAT'S a cheery thought," in a voice only rivaled by his -100 hostile speech.  -15 approval!   It's a mean answer if he loves you for sure :crying:
