Maric, as he got older, did want to be king. More importantly, he wanted to be a good king and he really came to enjoy governing. At least, that is how it is portrayed at the end of The Calling. Cailan did want to be king, but he wanted the glory part of it more. Hardened Alistair also wants to be king, and he wants to be a good king. I see him as a truer son to Maric in this regard, leaving out the obvious personality similarities. In the end, the one of the last three kings I see to be 'meh' is Cailan. I do believe he cared about Ferelden, just not the way Maric and Alistair do.
I haven't read The Calling yet. Just started the Stolen Throne.
