Hi Guys,

Something I have been dying to see in every single RPG I have played since Neverwinter Nights 2 is something similar, for those who played the game, to Crossroad Keep.

Some sort of story related orginization that you create and build up as the story line progresses, that you can pour loads of gold into through upgrades, recruitment and design. Imagine the camp in Dragon Age Origins just deeply customizable with the possibility to add structures, merchants, hired guards or mercs etc.

I dont mean something Skyrim style where you have one 'Steward' guy that you talk to and purchase everything from, you do your recruiting for instance around the map with the various people you meet, maybe you help them with a personal problem and they decide to work for you, or you persuade a merchant to pack up and take his business to your camp, you create items/structures from ore veins, woodland areas that you scout or prospect as you explore caves etc and ofcourse need a team of miners or woodcutters under your employ to gather the materials.

Merchants that you manage to recruit such as blacksmiths use the resources you find as currency, the more raw materials your team collects the more items become available, the more upgrades for your peoples tools, weapons, armor etc and from there on out you begin fortifying your area and making it into something great rather than the exact same home zone you started with

Not saying something huge, by a team of miners maybe 2 or 3 people strong, maybe have somewhere between 2 and 10 guards/thugs that you can find around the game and a few merchants. Your home zone also needs to feel alive and ever changing, rather than upgrades just appearing you watch your people carry them out, also plenty of interaction with your surroundings, from things like gambling / sparring to sending out thieves or bandits to gain some gold or agents to gather intel on various areas and ofcourse your people have daily routines, much the same as the towns in Skyrim.

Anyways you get the general idea, so many possibilities and directions to take and it would really add something to the game rather than just a boring old camp where everyone stands forever still frozen in the same place Image IPB

What do you think?

I really like your idea. As long as it fits with the story I think it would be cool. Even if its not to that extent at least some change in the camp every now and then would be nice instead of everyone just standing around like statues lol (except Shale). The random events in Origins were nice , but to few.

I also enjoy the "build up your base of operations" mechanic. The best I've seen it done was NWN2, but I'd personally like it to have a lot more importance and depth than even that game had.

I agree too. Its an excellent idea given it makes in context to the plot. NWN2 base building mechanic was awesome wish there is something like it on DA3

I'd love this, one of my favorite rpgs (skies of arcadia..yeah I know) had something like this and it's a large part of why I still replay it even though it's so old now

I ♥ Crossroad Keep and NWN2 and I'd like to see a mechanic like this in-game again. Crossroad Keep made sense within the NWN2 story though, and I wouldn't want to see something like that just to see it. It made more sense to have something that detailed for Vigil's Keep, so I'm not holding out any hope for DA3.

Ahh yes the thing Awakening was supposed to do and the thing DA2 should've done; especialy with active passages of time >__>; the thing kingdoms of amarlur did with nearly every location you got, then releases a $10 dlc expansion that goes above & beyond even that and gives you your own island fortress you can build, gather tons of unique people to work for you, all with their own quests, play politics with your neighbers to make allies or war with, gather supplies, pets, battle areans, everything awakening failed at basicly and so forth

So yeah, just do everything a $10 dlc for KoA: reckoning did and you'll have a pretty good rpg right there

The Dead Kel DLC possibly the greatest DLC ever made, but don't quote me on that (it totally is though)

I really like your idea OP.

Personally, I'd like that with a big, old pirate boat. Yes, I still want a big pirate boat....*a single tear*.

But I'd like to be mobile. Not tethered to one spot that such a fort/castle would require. I'd like to have a lair on water and sail to the different lands. Dock. Maybe have to trek inland a bit for some quests.

Recruit ppl to work on my boat. A crew. A cook. Even a merchant, or two. The merchants could even vary up their inventory by picking up new items in the different ports we go to.

I'd want to upgrade the boat. Practically and aesthetically.

Maybe even have a wee lil sea battle? *a single tear*

Regardless, I like your idea. I hope they do something like this. Along those lines anyway.

We'll see.

Crossroads Keep annoyed me greatly becaue of the lack of a proper time mechanic. It felt like you were punished if you played the game naturally, rather than just leaving the castle then coming back to it.

I do think a good RPG game could be made focused around being the ruler of a stronghold - need to stick in some decent strategy elements in there too - but sticking a few elements into an RPG doesn't really work for me. It tends to feel rather disconnected from the rest of the game, and a little pointless - really, the base is just a place to talk to companions and pick up quests, it doesn't need to be elaborate.

I've thought about this. I like your idea but something tells me we'll be on the road more in DA3. That might mean a return of the party camp. If that happens, hopefully we can personalize our own living space in the camp.

If I'm in an Inquisition and I have heavy backing(say Orlais and The Divine), then it makes even more sense. It would certainly beat sitting on lice covered bed rolls...

The fortress-building mechanic is definitely one of my favorite things in games, but I don't know if it would feel right to me in Dragon Age. It would really depend on the plot.

Even though DA2 took place in one location and was all about digging in and making a name for yourself, I don't think it would have really made sense there (not without some big changes, anyway). Kirkwall had internal conflict going on, rather than an outside force to defend against (like the Blight).

I agree that that's what Vigil's Keep should have been. Ah, well.

Edit: Oh ok, I think I understand more what you mean now. I haven't played Skyrim yet, but a while back a friend told me about the factions and guilds that you could help build/restore. Yeah, I see how something like that could work in DA3.

This exactly. If we are now running a newly formed Inquisition we will certainly need a HQ evan if for symbolic purposes OR a location to gather our armies OR a place to set up as a cetral hub for all agents. The divine/ruler of orlais/ the seekers may give us an old run down keep no one cares about for that purpose and then we turn the old keep into a new strong bastion for the order.

It may well have their own set of quests to upgrade the keep and some such and even decisions of recruiting soldiers and sergents just like NWN2 had. Even just talking about me makes be excited for such a feature in DA3 and also a bit nostalgic for NWN2(the first rpg i played) ^_^

People, myself included, have been screaming and pleading for this for years. Its rarely explored and is definitely something that needs to be in more games.

Awakenings touched on it - but to have a game go all out would be amazing.
