Now I realise I will have a few leap at me with forumSMACK hammers raised high but has there been any word if we will have a brother/sister/anykind of family in DA3?

The reason behind this question and topic is because I am ever so slowly ploting a DA2 playthrough (for DA3 saves) and find myself unable to go for a mage because that means I would lose Bethany! Yes, I am that weak and no, no I am not saying that the brother is terrible. I do very much like him and the riverly between him and your charecter ( though I wish Bioware would have allowed us to punch him when he accuses you for letting Beth die /shakefist).
Now the more I thought about it, the more I came to realise what a annoyingly good job ( in my opinion ) Bioware/writers did with the siblings and how GRRRR I was when the Templars snatched Bethany or how :( I was when she(or brother) died in the deep roads by Hawke's hand. Heck, I still find anyone a monster who turns her into a Warden or even worse kills her at the end of the game x) I also wanted to slap Bioware a bit for not letting us visit/talk to our siblings almost at all after they are taken/leave but...they did fix that to a degree with DLC' or well as long as you play Birthright at ACT2 and MoA at ACT3.

So yep! Any word at this? Did you care at all about the brother/sister charecter? No matter what the answer to my previous question, do you think such charecter(s) are needed for DA3 or would it just be a waste of time and resources?  And Bioware I know you probably cant confirm if there is a sibling in DA3 but...is there a chance at least? O_O I will take teasing reply over nothing!

 /end rant!

PS: I prefer warrior class over mage too thankfully. It does look great when my Hawke swings her oversized sword through wave and wave of enemies<3

Edit: Also if some mod or dev reads this, please pass on a big thank you to Jennifer Hepler for writing a charecter like that! Bethany was like the little sister I always wanted to replace my brother with (well he was really annoying when I still lived at home :D )

If there will be family member, i don't want to choose who will die by choosing class, it is non-sense, what class have to do with who will live and who will die?

I think that was made like that due to...story? I mean keeping double mages hidden in a Templar controlled city would have been even more tricky? Not...too sure but there is probably someone on this forum who knows the reason.

I think whatever passes for an Origin in this game (and I hope they have "something") - should have one of them allow for a sibling - that would be a good option I think.

No, thanks. I don't need anything to remind me of Bethany or Carver.

DA2 did a well enough job with that i felt, no need to milk it further, i'd be fine with siblings/family as background characters or even non existant or dead, just please no scenarios like human noble origin/sebastion/nate howe/you get the idea/it's been done to death now/move on with your writting bioware/mmk?

I was wondering who was going to ask the question. And that's just gross. Although Bethany and Hawke............... NO, NO, that's just gross.

Especially in your first play through the game. I'm not expecting a whole set of origin backgrounds (not that I wouldn't welcome this) but killing off a family member you just encountered in a game without any build up to that is shallow and only added to the weak start of DA2.

I support this. The sibling added an extra layer of feeling and care to the story.Over the course of the story I grew very fond and protective of Bethany as a sister. It felt good to know that my pc wasn't all alone in the world and had that kinship to fall back on especially in quest like legacy and mota post circle bethany, I cried at "I miss you". and yes, like the op, I also can not bring myself to make a mage and lose bethany

I thought they took A Song of Ice and Fire as inspiration? R.R. Martin has incest everywhere

I thought families were just plot elements killed off early on to motivate the hero.

It depends what you do. One of them (sister or brother) does bite the dust a bit too early in my opinion but I can live with the rest ( when they die that is).

Ahh and I think some mentioned that reusing siblings in DA3 would be bad because it's...well ''done before''. I dont agree with that at all! If anything I would say in DA3 they could explore it even more and be extra cruel with situations where you got to perhaps choose between harm towards sibling/family vs harm towards a large group of 'people'. I know that does not sound special at first but would be something at least!

Bioware had a great opportunity to add a new companion dynamic to their games with Bethany/Carver, but unfortunately they decided to pull their punch at the last second and remove the characters for the majority of the game early on, just when it was getting interesting. Seems to me like that ship has sailed; if they add a sibling companion in DA3 that character will never exist outside the shadow of DA2 no matter how hard they try.

I prefer less family stuff generally

It's easier for me to get into character if the protagonists close relationships develop during the game.

I, too, would prefer any family to be unseen and not heard. A history is fine, a living family that doesn't torment you mid-heroic-scene, but I donMt want them shoved down my throat. It seems unrealistic that you have a fully-heroic family. Let the PC be the star again!

When is the PC not the star in any Bioware game?

I've yet to see any protagonist of a Bioware game get well and truly upshown by any character since Baldur's Gate 2. Everything after that game has had the PC pampered and put up on a pedestal.

Well DA2 did it's best to pretend like Hawke was the star, but generally made them spectators when it counted.

Yes but the family members where not really doing that? If anything both of them point out/praise (sometimes iwth much sarcasm and loathing) Hawke when others poke.

MIght be remembering it wrong though.

edit: Also really Hawke was just tossed into a huge whirlwind of events, all things considerd she was still the 'star' as the seekers are trying to find her after.

In the most climactic moments like Leandra's death or the final battle (assuming you didn't just let them die in the Deep Roads) the game is at least as much about Hawke's family members as it is about him/her. If I want family drama I have real life.

I feel like family to Dragon Age = the aristos to the guillotine.

I'd find it refreshing if not only the family member (sibling or otherwise) LIVES, but doesn't get short-changed as far as dialogue and squad/plot-relevance. Pulling Bethany & Carver out of our group at the end of Act 1 was a bad call, IMO. If the Captain of the Guard can join my little adventures, why can't my templar brother?

I would want the family member to be either

A) A permanant companion.

B) A major side character.

None of what they did in DA2 [temporary companions that are only usable for DLC purposes] or DA:O [hi i'm your brother now you won't see me till the end of the game]

They didnt really do much with it in DA2, so they should either scrap it or make it a really important part of the plot without it overshadowing the main character.
