Why do people play on Insanity

Hi

This is not a trolling post. I simply have my own opinions about Mass Effect difficulty and I'm curious why some people chose to play on hardest difficulty there is.
I don't understand why someone would want to complete the game on the
hardest difficulty other than bragging about it to someone, and those people
woulnd't care. Or obtaining an achievement that doesn't do anything. In a story driven game like this with so many possibilities and replay value it would take ages to experience it all if you had to spend hours on completing a single mission. I am not that keen on FPS games but I love single player RPG's. I used to play on Normal or Veteran, but today those battles bore me. Just tons and tons of same AI enemies to kill. What excites me about Mass Effect are the atmosphere, music, major choises and most importantly romances. I find it that my time is way too valuable to stand behind a crate and exchanging fire with hard to kill enemies for a long time. During that time I could have experienced more of the story. It would be awesome if the difficulty at least was realistic in a sence of getting shot twice in order to die, but the same should it be with enemy as well. I just don't understand what it is so fun about dying for a fifth time and hearing the same lines again - kind of ruins the immersion.

In my younger days I loved FPS games, but today I find them pointless. I love the games where my actions matter and results are saved. Ironically those two types of games are now combined, hence Mass Effect.

Am I the only one who prefers the easiest difficuly with sometimes an exception during the important battles?
Narrative for misc missions and Casual/Normal for boss fights.

Because some people prefer playing for those achievements and for the combat as opposed to just going through the motions. Its a challenge and they enjoying beating those challenges.

Personally I prefer putting it on easy and getting to the story and choices and dialogue - but meh. To each their own - which is why we have difficult settings anyway.

After playing the multiplayer, the insanity difficulty feels like the bare minimum amount of difficultly the game should have. Grissom and Rannoch are tough, but the rest of the game I hardly ever die so it isn't an issue that prevents me from enjoying the story aspect of the game.

For me, its simply because after a few playthroughs, I've learned the way enemies spawn and respond, allowing me to blow through levels easily. So, to keep it interesting I bump it up to insanity.

Of course, if I'm looking to just go to story, I bump it down to casual.

Some people like the challenge.

Personally for me on a first playthrough I always choose the normal difficulty. Once I've had a feel for the game, and on NG+ or other playthroughs, then I up the difficulty.

I usually play for the experience and story, but with how easy ME3s Insanity difficulty was I did it to get the Platinum trophy.

While my decision to play an RPG is primarily for the strong story, world, and character components, the fact remains that a large % of any game is based around various combat mechanics. So, the reason that I play on Insanity personally is because it's more fun for me, and playing on higher difficulty increases the value of various gameplay mechanics that have been utilized.

All those elements like, upgrading weapons, choosing skills and evolutions, biotic explosions, etc are unnecessary and pointless when the game is too easy. You don't even have the opportunity use them. I want to be challenged and have at least a cursory need to consider who I bring on a mission, when to use skills most effectively, how to fight each type of enemy, etc. and I find the only way to do that is to play on the hardest difficulty.

If you can just throw all that out the window and walk through the game without those considerations it takes a lot of the depth and fun out of the game because your decisions don't have any consequence other than cosmetically. Nowadays I play every game I buy on the hardest difficulty available so that I actually need to learn the mechanics of the game to succeed.

I'll give my 2 cents too.

first and foremost, since all the other achievements were relatively easy to get, I decided to be the achievement **** and do insanity as well on top of the fact that I already did the same for the first 2 games. Second, as Icinix mentioned, just going through the game on autopilot doesn't always appeal to me in games so I occasionally turn up the difficulty. Since there was an achievement for doing so anyway, I got to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

For me it's because it feels more real, all the forces you fight against especially reapers are supposed to be strong and hard to beat, this difficulty reflects that. It also add tension since compared to other difficulties you are actually in danger, and makes victories much more satisfying. Killing a brute or a banshee with a few warps does ruin the immersion, for me at least.

In short: challlenge + realism.

But to be honest insanity in Mass Effect isn't that hard, feels like silver multiplayer matches to me.

I agree with all of your points.

To me, the RPG part of the game isn't just the conversations. I really, really enjoy getting to feel like I'm battling the crap out of some beasties, and I especially like feeling like a '"Commander"-- on anything less than hardcore/insanity, your squad just kinda feels like decoration. I love having to plot them on the battlefield, I love being on the brink of death and meleeing a straggler, and to be a huge RPG nerd, I love getting to know my Shepard in her element and letting her personality into the battle -- l won't send my crew out in front of me since I play a tank soldier, I try not to ever use them as bait, and if I'm out there with my LI it changes things, etc. Nerdy nerdy stuff but it's all stuff that whizzes by if the difficulty is set too low.

Because Insanity is the only difficulty worth playing. All the other modes are waaaaaaaaaaaay too easy. Heck, even Insanity is pretty damn easy. I never really felt challenged in ME3 when playing on Insanity.

Sure, some parts were pretty hard, the final mission on Earth comes to mind, but overall I don't think ME3's hardest difficulty mode deserves the label "insanity". ME3's Insanity is far from what I'd call "insane".

It was fun on ME3, but I'd never play insanity on ME2. It's simply immersion breaking to have Shepard struggle fighting mechs, or at least thats how I see it.

Well I played the game on normal the last time out and died a grand total of 3 times, and only one of those was a genuine honest to god kill by the enemy. This time, I've upped it to hardcore and whilst it is a bit harder, I'm doing just fine and still bulldozing my way through it. I'm at the end of act 1 and have died 4 times so far. If this playthrough goes well then I'll try insanity. As the others have said, it's about the challenge and bettering yourself as a player. And besides, ME3 is easier than it's predecessors and casual is just plain boring.

To get the platinum trophy on PS3. Not really to brag about, but just because I'm OCD about completing the game to 100%, and also the challenge makes combat more exciting.

The experience is more intense and fun if you play on insanity. Feels more real as others have said. And so far (until the Praethorians come back to SP) it's OK to handle.

Some people play games for some time..years...or more and they are good at shooting things. Its just not interesting to play without any threat from AI. Whats the point of playing if you can't be killed? Otherwise it would be a boring rush through levels.

Because it's fun. Insanity on ME3 really isn't that hard, and made the Earth mission actually fun for me, especially the reaper cannon part. I'm usually annoyed by the shaky cam but on Insanity I liked it for some reason.

They do it for the challenge. I play the first two games on veteran and then ME 3 on normal which I believe is supposed to be the ME 3 equivelant of veteran. I can probably play competantly at a harder setting but I find veteran (ME 3 normal) to be the right mix for me. Everyone plays at their own pace nothing wrong with playing at harder or easier difficulty levels.
