Are you saying that only FPS players want a challenging game? Come on, you can't honestly believe that.

I do think that it's mostly the FPS crowd that demands difficulty level escalation - as in, they always pick the highest difficulty as opposed to a difficulty that's actually enjoyable.

And no, giving every enemy tons of health and arbitrary immunities (armoured husks) does not make it more fun - it's just the cheapest way to make it more difficult. E.g. Skeleton King - he's got one attack that can instantly kill you which you can easily dodge, and a ton of healthy; as a result, the fight takes ages and one mistake will kill you but it is not technically challenging, it's just tedious.

Well, you're wrong. We all play games for different reasons but to say that bioware tried to make me3 more difficult as a way to appeal to the FPS crowd is a very ignorant statement. Challenging games have existed way before COD.

Im an achievement/trophy nut and I like the challenge. ME2 Insanity was the most fun Ive ever had in a shooter game.

Because I find combat way more fun if I actually have to try. For me, I find Mass Effect way too easy, even on insanity some times

A lot of us still recognize it for being what it is, a video game.  And a lot of people like to get some challenge out of their games to make them enjoyable.  If I'm just mindlessly clicking buttons to glide through a level then I'm not having much fun.  Higher difficulty pushes you to get good at the games systems, using skills strategically, picking your squad and ordering them around strategically, using everything at your disposal.  When you play on easy mode you can just blaze through the whole game with a level 1 avenger and never use any of your powers and completely ignore the squad members you take with you.  If all you honestly care about is the cutscnees and story then thats fine but a lot of people care about the overall experience.

Insanity in ME3 isn't even that hard, there are other games I play on normal sometimes even easy difficulty because they are overall still very difficult and I like most people don't want to be challenged too much to the point where you get frustraited and break your controller.  But Mass Effect 3 is not one of those super punishing games, not by a long shot.  Hardcore is easy and insanity is normal if you play strategically like the game really wants you to and don't try to just blast through it like a fps with little or no power and squad use.

Because it's fun. Having enemies just fall down because you walked into the room is not fun nor realistic to plenty of people.

It's hilarious that you would even find this as a topic in Mass Effect. There are plenty of games that are much harder than mass effect. The difficulty is not that hard worth this type of thread... It just means you have to use the right weapons and you can't walk through the game with one pistol. There is no real skill involved. Very sad you even made this thread.

ME3 difficulty is not even close to ME2 in the fun category. Just play story mode if you really want to stroll through the combat.

That tactic actually works perfectly fine once you get the DLC guns.

I would like to add that I think the real reason why people think hard = fun is because it's not repetitive.

I could literally walk through easy mode with one gun. that's repetitive. It gets old. It gets boring. It's the same thing over and over and over. Never having to make a choice or a change. I have a hard time thinking anyone would find that fun, but some people do.

I haven't played the vanguard in a long time so I don't know if the class has changed, but I found it too easy and repetitive at release in me3. I refuse to play it once it became so boring. It's the same thing over and over. spam the same thing. Not fun.

Now there are plenty of different levels of hard, but we are only talking about Mass effect.

Simple enough. I like the challenge, although I still didn't find time to complete SP on Insane difficulty. I'm more concerned with nightmare Platinum difficulty in MP.

I played Insanity on the 360 for the achievements but haven't bothered with the PC version of the achievement. Really it just is because of that little number but I haven't bought the DLC for the console, so perhaps I'm beating that "addiction."

A lot of it I think would depend on how much you enjoy the combat in the game. I'm one of those weird ones who think it was better in the first game.

Insanity is way to easy, if you have spent like 200 hours on Multiplayer and only play Gold.

Now a days, only 2 Banshees coming at me, I gun them down with my Harrier X

Because i was going for the Platinum trophy. I have platinumed both ME2 and ME3 and it is also the most fun difficulty to play imo.

Because it is fun to be challenged and to overcome those challenges.

I'll put an example to explain it:

I love football (soccer, depending from which country the reader is) and so I play to FIFA series...... when I play a march I always want to win, but for me there is no excitement in doing so on the first 2 difficulty levels..... the rivals offer no resistance..... there is no excitement, no challenge...... so there is no fun

Because the difficulty in ME is a joke even on Insanity but at least it forces me to think at times.

Honestly, at the most basic, it's for the challenge.

Personally, I worked up to Insanity in ME2, and frankly, if I didn't play ME3 on Insanity, I'd be bored to tears b/c ME3 is just not as hard as ME2.

I played on insanity just for the platinum trophy...

No other reason to suffer the whole ME3 ... and never again

Sorry daft joke.

Insanity isn't that challenging. All of my playthroughs were on insanity.

I've been playing Baldur's Gate. The first game was so tough that on final battle I had to adjust the difficulty to (Supremely easy), summon a legion of skeletons and monsters and even then I only just beat Serevok.

Dragon Age Origins was so difficult that at some sections of the game I had to go down to casual. Beating Brood Mother and any Dragon was challenging beyond what I'm used to. The rest of the game was on Normal. So when I did Awakening, Golems of Amgarak and Witch Hunt, I suddenly found that I could play on Nightmere without sweating (despite struggling on Normal in the main game).

Heck most of the James Bond games are so challenging that I can't get past the first few levels on Supremely easy difficulty.

Most beat em ups are fiendishly difficult for me.

Nearly every racing game is challenging.

Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2 among the few games where I managed to beat the campaign (yes there is a campaign) on toughest difficulty. Even those two games are more challenging than Mass Effect 3 on insanity.

But the thing is Mass Effect multiplayer has Silver, Gold and Platinium. All three of which are extremely difficult. Why can't single player have one or two higher difficulties for those who have become accustom to multiplayer?

Why do people play on Insanity

I do one Insanity run for each game. Just because it's a small bit of internal bragging rights with me. Then I find the difficulty I enjoy the most. For ME1 that was Hardcore, for ME2 that was Veteran, and I tend to keep ME3 on Normal now that I've done my big ME3 Insanity run.

Insanity = Silver in multiplayer, and when you've played a lot of Silver matches, you need Insanity to feel like they're fighting back!

Sure, every now and then you have to die a time or two while mapping spawns, but that's makes beating it a lot more satisfying.

Three new difficulty modes on Mass Effect 3.
All of these difficulties will be more challenging than insanity.

With N7 as the third toughest. (Is as challenging as trying to solo a Silver Match online)
Spectre as the second toughest. (Is as challenginge as trying to solo a Platinium Match online)

Harbinger difficulty designed for the elite Mass Effect players. Beating Harbinger difficulty is supposed be as challenging as beating Novak Djokovic, Andy Murry or Rafael Nadal at tennis. A true challenge for challenge seekers.

N7 Difficulty:

All Cerberus enemies have tech powers (such as sabotage, incinerate and overload). Some will have biotic powers (such as pull, warp and throw). Dragoons will also be introduced.

Geth Troopers will gain Geth Bombers, Geth Hoppers/Sappers/Assassins (the ones that jump from one wall to another) and Geth Bombers.

Reapers: Reapers will also have the backing of the Collector forces from Retiliation DLC and Mass Effect 2 with Harbinger frequently "Assuming Control".

Spectre Difficulty:

All of the changes from N7 difficulty but better team work amongst enemy forces. In addition all enemies will have protections, be it kinectic shields, barriers, armour or riot shields.

In addition, there will be time limits on each mission. If you do not reach each check point on each mission in a certain time, your squad will be surrounded by large numbers of enemies. It is possible to defeat these hoardes though it is better if you avoid them altogether.

Harbinger Difficulty:

All of the changes from N7 and Spectre difficulty will be present but this difficulty will have the best possible AI.

The AI will be as proficient as the top players online if not better.

Harbinger difficulty will automatically patch itself adjusting to the way that the world's Top 10 online players play the game. Less than 5% of Mass Effect players have what it takes to beat Harbinger Difficulty.

New addition: Every level regardless of faction (except levels entirely indoors) will have 3 additional harvesters. Harbinger can "assume control" of any enemy of any faction, buffing their armour and shielding, whilst pulverising the player with powerful balls of energy and powerful shockwaves.

insanity on me3 is so easy compared to me1 and 2, collector ship and some side mission with mech is so hard in me2, and poor shooting mechanic make me1 hard to me even on veteran
