From the perspective of a console veteran, the other difficulties are simply too easy and only Insanity provides some gameplay challenge.

Honestly, what they call "Insanity" in ME3 is the "Normal" of comparable games.

I don't mean to sound cocky, but I quite agree with this. I really like a challenge, and in ME3 there are certain points where I got that challenge. But for the majority of the game I actually found things to be a little too easy.

Mind you I was playing as an engineer, so my combat drone and sentry turret where drawing almost all of the enemies' attention.

A couple of times I had to actually confirm that I was, in fact, playing on Insanity via the menu.

Which I didn't get. The ME series is general is laughably easy. I honestly thought I was playing on easy once.

I agree, ME, ME2 and ME3 rank very high on my ''easiest games'' list. The only difficult part I remember is the close quarter fights in the Arrival DLC on the asteroid space station.
Everything else was a walk in the park.

I like to feel like I earned everything rather than just watching a Mass Effect 3 movie. I will agree with others that after you "get" how the combat mechanics work, insanity really isn't that hard. Someone posted a "nightmare" mode. Anyone with past fps XP from games like counterstrike will think this is too easy.

The third game is a lot easier than the second one. I even had to check the difficulty in the menu the other day to check that it hadn't dropped back down to normal. Now when I upped ME2 from veteran to hardcore I knew about it and really struggled until I got used to the mechanics. I loved the earlier post about N7, spectre and Harbinger difficulty options and agree entirely that very hard settings should be added in via future game patches. I wouldn't necessarily play at those levels myself but many would love to so they should add official support for harder play options. I can't understand why despite BioWare saying the ME3 would be a lot harder (normal is the new veteran) it is actually the easiest!

This sentiment may apply to the first ME, where the combat wasn't totally friendly and as polished as it's become, but now why wouldn't you want to challenge yourself? I'm seriously surprised that anyone would feel as the OP does, especially since Mass Effect 3 is an easy game, even on Insanity..... and who brags about playing Mass Effect? lol

I agree with you about the difficulty making things longer/more tedious in respect to ME1. I did it because there's an achievement for it. And damn it, I want all achievements with respect to ME. That's just how I am.

However, I completely disagree with you when it comes to difficulty and ME2. Insanity is the only difficulty that ME2 is actually fun on. All three games I played through initially on veteran, because that's just how I roll. I like the story aspect more. On my second playthrough I always bump it up to insanity (except for ME1, explanation above). ME2 was just so much more interesting and gave more depth to weapons/abilities. As a soldier, I had something for shields, something for armor, something for mooks. As a sentinel, I loved the caster spec, warp for armor, overload for shields. I could strip defenses in no time flat! Loved it.

But that's just me. ME3 insanity was far easier than ME2 insanity, and I'm a little disappointed with that. I was hoping for more challenge. Again, I like the increased difficulty after I've experienced the story, to me, it extends the life of the product. ME1 though, I did it for the achievement, and moved on. That just becomes a grind fest.

Insanity isn't hard, it's just tedious and long to do damage to the enemy.

Not long at all if you import a character and use high level weapons. I'm basically one and two shotting most enemies as an infiltrator. Boses, 3-4 shots.

Because it gives you a totally different experience. The methods/tactics I employ on easier settings vary greatly from those I use on Insanity. I put a lot more thought into which squadmates are optimised for which missions.   Personally I found ME2 a lot harder on Insanity.

Mice, keyboards and other hardware vastly improved.  Get decent kit and it makes playing on harder settings far easier than it was when I first started gaming on the ZX Spectrum (how old!!!).  Being able to play on Insanity prolongs the life of the game for me and offers more of a challenge.

Plus tbh apart from Kai Leng and battle on Earth, it's not that hard with the right character and weapons, especially once you max your powers out or you run with an imported character.

Strangely there doesn't seem to be a correlation between the settings in MP mode, I find Silver roughly equivalent to Insanity difficulty in SP. I guess it's weighted because you have four humans playing co-op but I sure as hell can't envisage ever soloing Platinum!

EDIT: Typos

If I'm honest I've only done one play through on insanity for ME2 and ME3 which was just for the trophy.

I do get a slight sense of a achievement out of it but if it wasn't for the trophy I probably wouldn't do any play through's on insanity difficulty but that's me lol. I know some enjoy the challenge which is cool to.

I don't play on insanity either. I am impressed by everyone saying its so easy. I do okay on gold sometimes I will dominate other times I don't do very good but I can usually hold my own at least and I have a hard time playing beyond normal. I struggled to beat hardcore ME 2 and on hardcore in ME 1 I can't seem to get passed Chora's Den. That said I think it really depends on you as a player. For me its boring if the game is too easy and frusterating if the game is too hard. I generally don't like to die but I do like to feel like I am getting some sort of challenge.

Personally for me it enhances story. When you're fighting your way though enemies that actually do some damage it's more interesting (monastery mission anyone?) and after you finished you actually feel like you accomplished something. And I'd like more difficult mode that's for sure.

Because 9 months of playing Multi-player on Platinum made me realise how overpowered Shepard is. (10 powers? I'm good with 3)

but in MP you can more or less run around the circles, you can't do in SP, well in most places you can't.

Because challenging ones self and overcoming challenges is fun, a game that pushes you to your limit is engaging. That's why most games have difficulty settings; So people who like challenges can have fun.

How is this even remotely hard to comprehend?

Well, first of all, its not that hard. "Hours per mission"? Really?

Second, I prefer insanity BECAUSE its a story based game. Dying quickly under gunfire and needing to actually care and pay attention is way more immersive than being able to faceroll through effortlessly and even stand around taking hits like they're nothing.

I can't fathom why anyone who really cares about an immersive story experience would play it on anything less than the most difficult setting.

Hi

This is not a trolling post. I simply have my own opinions about Mass Effect difficulty and I'm curious why some people chose to play on hardest difficulty there is.
I don't understand why someone would want to complete the game on the
hardest difficulty other than bragging about it to someone, and those people
woulnd't care. Or obtaining an achievement that doesn't do anything. In a story driven game like this with so many possibilities and replay value it would take ages to experience it all if you had to spend hours on completing a single mission. I am not that keen on FPS games but I love single player RPG's. I used to play on Normal or Veteran, but today those battles bore me. Just tons and tons of same AI enemies to kill. What excites me about Mass Effect are the atmosphere, music, major choises and most importantly romances. I find it that my time is way too valuable to stand behind a crate and exchanging fire with hard to kill enemies for a long time. During that time I could have experienced more of the story. It would be awesome if the difficulty at least was realistic in a sence of getting shot twice in order to die, but the same should it be with enemy as well. I just don't understand what it is so fun about dying for a fifth time and hearing the same lines again - kind of ruins the immersion.

In my younger days I loved FPS games, but today I find them pointless. I love the games where my actions matter and results are saved. Ironically those two types of games are now combined, hence Mass Effect.

Am I the only one who prefers the easiest difficuly with sometimes an exception during the important battles?
Narrative for misc missions and Casual/Normal for boss fights.

Becasue people enjoy challenge. There's no way to deny that some people want the challenge. I beat Gears of War on Insane because it is fun to challenge myself. Why? Because it's fun to some.

My only reason for doing it is this, I had one achievement left to get, and hell, if you can do it, why not?

Personnaly, i play in insanity and i often skip some damage bonus because otherwise, the ennemy die too fast and i progress too fast. I'm not intrested in rushing the game, but i don't intend to miss head shot and skill combo either.
