I want to know which class you think is consistently great across the whole trilogy. I'm interested in finally choosing a personal "canon" class, and because I haven't played as every class, I require more information. I'm particularly interested in the Sentinel. Is it as great as it seems?

You can discuss which classes are best for a single game, but try to consider the whole trilogy. Of course, this is limited to single-player.

Personal favourite goes to Adept.

Fun crowd controlling/biotic detonation (ME 2 & 3 brought us biotic explosions).
Great way to combine telekinesis with gun play.

The other five are also amazing.

 Adept Powers

ME 1

Singularity: Trap enemies in a black hole.
Lift: Lift enemies into the air.
Throw: Throw enemies.
Stasis: Freeze enemies
Warp: Make enemies more vulnerable to guns.
Barrier: Protect yourself with a few extra hit points.
Marksman: Your pistol fires quicker, harder and more accurate, overheating slower.

ME 2/3 Powers

Singularity: Trap enemies in a black hole. Drains shields.
Pull: Lift enemies into the air and drag them towards you.
Throw: Throw enemies.
Shockwave: Launch a short ranged train of explosive pulses that do damage and throw enemies backwards.
Warp: Does damage to armour and stops health regeneration.
Cluster Grenade: A biotic grenade that does damage over a wide area.

Keyword being "consistently". In terms of consistency, then I find Infiltrator, Soldier, and Vanguard consistently great across all three games in the series. I have not played Adept yet in ME3 single player so I cannot comment on how good it is, although from what I have seen, you can probably include that in the list of consistently good across the series.

Which brings me to the Sentinel and Engineer. I will talk about the Engineer first.

The Engineer was my favorite class in ME2 and still remains good in ME3 although I find its two signature powers--Combat Drone and Sentry Turret--are rather lucklaster. In ME1 however, it was probably the worst class. The tech powers were rather bland (or boring depending on your opinion) and most tended to be situational.

As for the Sentinel, I never really liked the Sentinel in ME1 for whatever reason. And in ME2, Tech Armor was good for assaulting with a shotgun, but got in the way of your power-casting abilities. I actually find it good in ME3.

If I had to choose just one class between all three games, then it would probably be the Infiltrator as the most consistently great.

In Mass Effect 2 & 3 all 6 classes are amazing.

In Mass Effect 1 I found soldier to be a bit dull and I found engineer to be a bit weak.

I have played most of my games as a Soldier. So i can´t tell much of the others.
I simply love being a soldier, i like big guns and shoot everything at my sight :P
But i feel the need to change so i will try vanguard or Infiltrator.

The difficulty level you plan on playing would matter a bit here as well, especially for the ME1 pick.

I personally love the Sentinel in all ME games, it's harder on insanity than other classes though until you get to ME3, piece of cake then. B)

I tried Vanguard, Adept and Sentinel. I really love the biotics and was actually having a hard time between Adept and Vanguard until ME2 which made me fall in love with the Vanguard class, and I never even use a shotgun. I used pistols (Assault Rifles instead in 3) and Sniper Rifles.

If you're interested in Sentinel give it a try, that's the best thing you can do to see if you like it. Or look up what kind of powers/abilities the class has to see if it is something you're really interested in. That information is not hard to find at all. Best thing I liked about Sentinel was having access to Overload. Biggest downside with that class to me was that I felt a little more overwhelmed when enemies got too close. Probably because I was so used to my Vanguard abilities (like Shockwave and Nova) saving the day. It made the class a little hard to play for me.

I know you said you want one but you don't need a canon class. You can totally change it each game if you like how one is in one game but not another. Especially given how different things are from 1 to 2.

Adept. I find ME2 for an Adept depends on your strategy- I can literally shred Harbinger/Collector and spam Shockwave. The third game, your effectiveness depends on a recharge bonus, mine is around 200% and knowing how to use cover and range.

The first game, the Adept build is just awesome sauce, I mean it, the most fun and where customizing the skills can completely alter your playing style without weakening yourself.

Sentinel + Assault Rifle is the most powerful and versatile class overall.

Mass Effect 1

Bonus talent: Assault Rifles.
Weapons of choice: HMWA Master line or Pulse Rifle.

Mass Effect 2

Bonus talent: Armor-Piercing Ammo.
Advanced training:  Assault Rifles.
Weapons of choice: Geth Pulse Rifle, Locust, Carnifex and Particle Beam.

Mass Effect 3

Bonus talent: Defense Matrix.
Tip: Reset your powers in ME2 before importing, and completely evolve Defense Matrix (shield bonus, power synergy, power recharge) before anything else. You can completely forget about Tech Armor, and focus on the other powers/skills.
Ammo powers: evolve the squad versions of your squad's ammo powers.
Passive skills: Don't forget to maximize your Weight Capacity as soon as possible.
Weapon of choice: Particle Rifle V as your sole weapon, modded with a Magazine Upgrade and a Piercing Mod.

Good luck!

You can't go wrong with any of the 6 classes.
However I can't deny the benefits of rocking an assault rifle, whilst casting tech powers in one hand and biotics in the other.
That and when you reach Mass Effect 3 you get 2 omniblades and a lift grenade.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that soldier is the easiest, but also the least interesting. As far as tactical and interesting goes, I would say engineer or infiltrator.

Engineer, in general. But I don't know, in the first game classes are dramaticallly different in their functionality, there I think I'll always prefer a straight up soldier. I don't really like how powers work in the first game, they are a lot less effective in combat.

Adept all the way for me. Having a fellow biotic in the squad for ME2/3 means booms all over the place. And yea, with the Assault rifle bonus in ME1, groovy. Though for ME2, I always chose the Sniper bonus from the Collector ship.

To quote Lankist upon the selection of Soldier for the interactive paint adventure:
"You are a SOLDIER, likely the MOST BORING THING you could have POSSIBLY BEEN in this AMAZING UNIVERSE fraught with TECHNICAL GENIUSES and SPACE WIZARDS and such."

Not having a go at soldiers, I just found this amusing.

All you need to turn the Soldier into a really fun class is a huge buff to the slo motion in adrenaline rush.
Oh if you can do fancy matrix style moves during adrenaline rush...Posted Image

For me, it's a contest between Vanguard and Adept. Both classes have served me well throughout the trilogy. Adepts have been the best overall... but that charge...

I'd vote Vanguard. My class preference went like this

ME1- Vanguard. I always liked the caster/warrior hybrids in rpgs. Biotics + shotguns seemed to fit that theme. I picked singularity for my bonus power to get even closer to a pure adept.

ME2- Vanguard at first, but then adept. Charging is fun, but it's not all I wanted to do. I tried to make a biotic/combat hybrid vanguard with reave/assault rifles, and focused mainly on pull/reave as opposed to charge. It felt weak. So I ultimately went adept and just picked a shotgun/barrier, for my biotic warrior.

ME3- Hooray, back to the vanguard. With the vanguard being able to set up and detonate his own explosions, baseline ammo powers, passive weapon/shotgun damage, extra carry weight to use said weapons, and the return of carnage as a bonus power, I feel like the ME1 biotic warrior is back. I don't even bother with charge anymore.

I have played with every class and I have to say the vanguard is my favorite class. He was overpowered in 1 and in 2 he could be troublesome on insanity if you loose control of the field but with the ability to roll in three as well as nova the vanguard is a biotic juggernaut. I hate the engineer class the most but keep in mind this is all on insanity on lower levels he's fun but too much micromanaging on insanity

If we're talking about playing on Insanity, I think ME1 favors the Vanguard and Soldier classes most because of just sheer damage output. ME2 clearly favors the Sentinel because that game favors defense. ME3 favors the Adept because of explosions.

I prefer the Vanguard in all three games. Love the high risk, high reward playstyle. The addition of the biotic charge in ME 2 really set this class apart for me when it comes to fun factor. Plus gotta love the shotgun.

Hey the Sentinel, despite Bioware screwing over their main grab for playing them in ME2, in ME3 singleplayer they are a crowd controlling powerhouse that can handle any situation with their biotics and tech. I just don't use Tech Armor in ME3 at all. Soldier is boring as all heck in singleplayer now. If you think about it Bioware really messed with alot of the main abilities for alot of the classes in ME3. Engineer's drone is nothing like it was in ME2 (it was almost like a third squaddie), Sentinel tech armor just plain out sucks, and Soldier's adrenaline rush just not fun anymore. I feel like Vanguards, Adepts, and Infiltrators got all the love in ME3 singleplayer.

Soldier. You can play the whole game without dying once. Even on insanity.
