what are some good classes for soloing higher difficulties like gold and plat? and does playing solo on higher difficulties give you more points per kill than it does on bronze? (for the challenges)

I hear using a Krogan Vanguard with a Reager versus Geth works pretty well. However, I suggest you practice until you can extract on Silver consistently before you attempt a higher difficulty.
In higher difficulties, you don't get more points per kill, but you do have more enemies to kill, so you do end up with more XP in the end.

Kroguard with Reegar and Incendiary Ammo III or IV vs Geth is a slam dunk.
Try to keep Rage up by finishing enemies with Charge or Melee.
Also don't turn your back to Drones or a group of enemies because that is basically the only way you can get staggered.
The rest sort of depends on your skillset. I have only solo'd (well to extraction) with GI, Human Engineer, Destroyer and Krogan Vanguard on Gold. One of those is a bit more difficult than the other. In any event, map choice can make your life a lot easier. Giant is a good one to learn on because it is large and you can put objects in between the enemies and you.
Other classes that I have only tried once and something lame happened, but I can still recommend:
Turian Ghost is very powerful if used right. The Stim Packs are quite helpful.
Shadow is very good against Cerberus. However be careful. On my attempt I Shadow Striked into a Phantom sync kill on Wave 9.
Human soldier gets a free ops pack with every Adrenaline Rush more or less. I should have tried this guy again... got killed on a pizza delivery wave. This was a while back vs Reapers.
