Is it just me, or do the portraits for black characters look more like particularly badly sunburnt white people? See for example Nephowyn. She looks lovely in the creator itself, but her portrait just looks painful.

I've seen some good black characters so far. Yours just looks purple. No clue what you did. :P

Try harder, I guess. Check out the celebrity look-alike thread, there's an amazing Samuel Jackson. He sure as heck looks black. I think you need to change the complexion, nose, and hair in yours.

That IS odd... Hmm. I'm not sure how your character turned so purple people eater. It is possible to create lovely black/brown/asian characters. Maybe try one shade lighter than the current one you're using?

Couple of my dark characters:

You'll probably have to tweak the facial features quite a bit. My character's not black but Southeast Asian. Not sure if I managed to capture the look completely, but I did have to enlarge the nose and mouth several times before I was satisfied.

Try looking at a picture of a real person while you're doing it, and make it look like them. If you're not artistic naturally, you may find it easier to copy features than make your own. I know when I'm drawing, I can look at a picture of, say, a horse and draw it fine, but I'm lost if I try to make one on my own.

Huh, weird, your dark skinned characters do look really good... every time I tried to make anyone with dark skin they'd come out looking really purple or blue like the OP's character.  The complexion slider didn't help :(

It's definitely more than skin tone and complexion alone. Maybe flit through the presets and find the best starter you can, then work with it from there.

It's actually somewhat hard to make an African black looking character because the facial features tend towards Caucasian. Fits the setting, though, I guess.

This one I have as my portrait looks someone with Arabic blood, me thinks.

I wonder of peoples avatars will be more and more original once all got there own made. At first people here seemed to been satisfied with something that looks quite common. I would really like some interesting alternatives to those, I hope we will se nice mods that will add lots of skins and face options in the future.

You could try messing with the make up and skin complexion. I had to get rid of the makeup to make my character look a bit more normal in her portrait.

I used a darker skin tone for my Dalish Elf, I think it worked out nicely.

Mine looks a little strange too, but I don't think it looks too bad.

I can move the skin tone to the left a notch or two and get a slightly more natural looking portrait, but it still appears much lighter and more pink in the portrait view than it does in the full screen view. My intent was to create something as far as possible from the normal so-pale-as-to-be-almost-see-through elvish stereotype. She's got a slightly golden blush and eye shadow, to try and retain a slight ethereal look, but changing that doesn't seem to alter the purpleness. Arnowyn is exactly the same character, just with skin tone swung all the way to the left, and a slight alteration to the hair.

It's the contrast between the hair and skin. Copper hair + brown face = Odd.

I thought everyone knew black people don't look good with blonde hair. Look at Dennis Rodman, or even Martin Lawrence in Big Momma's House.

I haven't had any problems with some of the darker skin characters I've created, though I have seen some strange looking skin tones.

That's not true. Like with white people, it really depends on the person.

The Samuel L. Jackson you mention is mine. Here he is.

That does make her look odd, granted. But she's an elf, I want her to look slightly unnatural. What I don't want is for her to look purple, and changing the hair colour doesn't seem to affect that. Like, I said, I'm happy with how she looks normally. It's only the portrait that's weird.

OK, so I just went through all the presets and there's only one that uses either of the two rightmost skin tones. He's a Dwarven male, and his portrait looks purple.
