I started this on Hard mode, so this fight was one of the hells to come. Had to spam the mage's spells then tried to keep it immobilized whenever possible with stuns and stuff. The fight ended with everyone dead except for my PC, which I then got the no dying achievement for that section. Also captured screenshots of the killing blow, but the site just won't upload it.

Like the people above said, you can pretty much just kite with whoever the ogre's targeting and use ranged attacks with your party members. The ogre never switched targets, at least for me (on hard). Go for stuns and snares with your party members whenever they refresh, and drink potions liberally (hope you have a bunch left). The thing has pretty high physical resistance so it may take a while to land a stun/snare, but your kiter shouldn't take too much damage if you do it right since the ogre seems to move at the same speed as your party members.

It was a little rough on me. I lost the random soldier right off the bat. Somehow he got clobbered by an AoE and the Orge picked him up and killed him. So I was down to 3 party members. But I still was able to beat the Ogre on Normal difficulty. Had Alistair the random mage and myself a backstabbing rogue.

I had very few healing potions by this time, because as a Rogue I was clearing every area I could find treasure hunting. Although I had to reload and try again a few times, I ended up defeating him by attacking with Alistair and the fighter around 120 degrees to each other, and I was backstabbing from the back. I used the mage to fire boost the weapons, and I boosted my swords with poison (found a lot of poisons in the tower). I actually found my party died to easily as individuals running around because the Ogre just took us out one at a time, so the group attack really helped me, although others have found success by keeping a member running. Keep at it, it's not about the destination, it's about the journey. : )

Played this through on Nightmare straight up with Human Noble Warrior (Sword and Board), had to load 5 times or so to beat it. It basically just came down to Micro-Management (and not letting the ogre grab you, because on Nightmare he has knockdown resistance and I haven't been able to interrupt him) but I also didn't have the best talents for that fight.

I forgot to do a couple of quests so I loaded my save from the Origin Story and re-did the whole game up to where I got to (Lothering) and I chose a few different skills, that Shield Fortress one really works against the Ogre because it gives you more resistance to knockdown.

Flaming Weapons + using all that tower mage's potential really makes the fight easy though

Had to give up on this one and drop to Easy. That made the fight trivial, and I beat it on the first attempt without issuing a single command.

Looking back at the comments here, it seems there are two working strategies: have a decoy run around to distract the ogre, or use a lot of ranged attacks.

I didn't have any ranged attacks beyond those of the Circle Mage, nor any meaningful healing beyond a half dozen poultices, and I got stomped repeatedly, rarely getting the ogre's health below 25%. Ultimately, the fight was more frustrating than fun. I actually thought it was a puzzle at one point, and wasted time running around the room looking for a lever or a prop.

I'm astonished anyone managed to beat the creature on Normal with melee only, let alone Hard. If you managed it, how?

Those that found it easy, gee, that's nice for you but unless you're offering advice it's not really germane to the question.

I agree with Twitchmonkey -- I definitely micromanage the AI on the boss fights, jumping from character to character to make sure everyone uses their abilities to the best effect.

For the ogre fight, I had Alistair draw his attention, alternately banging on him and running, and switched everyone else to ranged, and had them poke him full of arrows from a distance, using potions as necessary. (When I was playing a rogue, sometimes I would run in to do some backstabbing, too. Flanking is key, as someone noted above.) That way, even when Alistair was running, the ogre was still taking damage, and my more delicate characters didn't get knocked out.

What I've done for this is make sure everyone has atleast 1 method of ranged and after the short cutscene I order all the people to spread out to the edges of the room and then micromanage the character the ogre targets to keep it running around in circles while the other 3 range it to death.

Yes, this is a pretty amazing fight. When your main character gets the killing blow, it's very satisfying. The death animation is killer. :)
